	CLEVELAND, Ohio – Scribbles in my notebook about what I’m hearing from the Browns OTAs:
</p>

<p>
	Here’s the disclaimer: This is an upbeat time of year. No real hitting. It’s a lot of NFL style touch football. As one executive told me, “It’s almost like a passing camp, but you can still see things.” That said, here we go:
</p>

<p>
	1. There is a lot of excitement about Elijah Moore. The Browns plan to use the receiver acquired from the Jets in different roles, not just as the standard wideout. They call him a “chess piece,” in terms of being able to move around the board (field). He’s not a pure speed guy always running deep routes.
</p>

<p>
	2. Moore was high on the list of GM Andrew Berry, who first tried to deal for him at the 2022 trading deadline. Moore’s attitude is excellent. Of course, that’s true of about every player at this point. Moore had some problems with the Jets coaches last season. This is a fresh start for him with an organization that wants him and believes in him.
</p>

<p>
	3. Here’s a negative view from ESPN’s analytics guy Bill Barnwell: “I wasn’t in love with the Browns’ move to trade away some of the draft capital they had left in a trade for Elijah Moore, who fell out of favor with the Jets. Cleveland moved down 32 picks in the process. While Moore looked promising as a rookie, he has already played two years of his rookie deal. With Moore, Donovan Peoples-Jones and a trio of third-round picks (David Bell, Anthony Schwartz and Cedric Tillman), the organization has chosen the quantity approach in attempting to find a No. 2 wideout behind Amari Cooper. I’m not sure it has one.”
</p>

<p>
	4. This is where coaching matters. Can Kevin Stefanski put Deshaun Watson in the right situation to at least approach his 2020 Pro Bowl performance? Moore had a promising rookie year in 2021 as Barnwell admitted. Can the coaching staff prove their talent evaluators to be right about Moore?
</p>

<p>
	5. I didn’t have a big problem with the Browns moving back those 32 draft spots to add Moore. They used that pick acquired from the Jets to select Cedric Tillman. The rookie from Tennessee has been impressive, using his 6-foot-3 frame to be a good target. He has been connecting with rookie QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson (DTR). They played together in high school at powerhouse Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas.
</p>

<p>
	6. The Browns like how DTR has grasped the playbook and has a mature approach to preparation. The other three QBs were with the team last year: Kellen Mond, Joshua Dobbs and Watson. The Browns believe DTR spending five years with Bruins coach Chip Kelly, who previous coached in the NFL, helped DTR. DTR made 48 starts for UCLA. His maturity is obvious.
</p>

<p>
	7. I hear Stefanski was a strong supporter of drafting Tillman. The rookie has a lot of talent in front of him at receiver: Cooper, Moore, Marquise Goodwin and DPJ. That said, he could see more action than you’d expect from a third-round pick.
</p>

<p>
	8. Is the receiver room packed with stars? Nope. But Cooper is a Pro Bowler. I like DPJ, who has talent and size. I’m probably alone on this, but I still think David Bell can be a viable NFL receiver. Good QBs and coaches make average wide receivers look better. Let’s see if that happens.
</p>

<p>
	9. “Attack ... attack ... attack!” That’s what Jim Schwartz keeps preaching, especially to his defensive linemen. He’s keeping things simple. He believes Za’Darius Smith, Dalvin Tomlinson, Myles Garrett, Ogbo Okoronkwo and Jordan Elliott are the key veterans. This is a different system. I wonder if Schwartz can find some football gold in the collection of young linemen Siaki Ika, Isaiah McGuire, Perrion Winfrey, Alex Wright and Tommy Togiai. At least one of those guys should be able to break into the defensive line rotation.
</p>

<p>
	10. For most of his NFL career, Smith played in the 3-4 system as a linebacker. He is a natural 4-3 defensive end, ideal for Schwartz’s scheme. He was unhappy with his contract in Minnesota. The Browns have him in a good spot because his reworked contract is a one-year deal. He is playing for a new deal in 2024, which should bring out the best in him. At least, that’s the plan.
</p>

<p>
	11. Smith is excited about being in the 4-3 alignment, which he played in college. He said Schwartz told him this: “We just need you to get off the ball, man. We know that you haven’t had that in the past eight years.”
</p>

<p>
	12. While Schwartz has been using Grant Delpit and Juan Thornhill at both safety positions, I hear the Browns want Thornhill to be the pure “free safety.” That was the position John Johnson III was supposed to handle, but he had major problems in two years with the Browns. In fact, Johnson is still looking for a team after being cut by Cleveland in March.
</p>

<p>
	13. While defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson was the high-priced free agent acquisition, Thornhill could be the most important. The Browns haven’t had a true “center fielder” at safety since ... who? The Browns desperately need a play-maker at the position. Remember all the blown coverages the last few years? That has to change.

			I agree with that, I don't think Myles is built that way.
		</p>

		<p>
			The same way I don't think Nick Chubb is a leader. No one really talks about that, because he plays offense and the natural inclination is that the quarterback is the leader of the offense.

<p>
	Agree with both of you. Although they both fit the 'lead by example' category; we definitely need more vocal leaders. Nick Chubb can't help but inspire with his work ethic and game day demeanor though. I remember after a Chubb TD when OBJ came running up... <em>"I wanna score a TD!" </em>
</p>

<p>
	Chubb responded, while staring straight out at the field: <em>"I wanna WIN." </em><br /><br />
	We need someone on D with a personality that is not afraid to offer some constructive criticism without being too abrasive. I feel like Schwartz will demand that from his 'leaders' so we should be in much better shape this year.

			Again, I don't see Myles as the team leader type.  I feel as though he would have to force himself to be that type of person whereas to the right type of personality it just comes naturally.  I see him as a supportive 'second' to the team leader(s)...because of his talent, NFL experience and good guy quality.   - But that's just my take on him.

			Garrett is a perennial Pro-Bowler. What is he blaming on ex-DCs that people go along with?
		</p>

</blockquote>

<p>
	I think he's referencing Myles' comments last year criticizing the lack of defensive adjustments to stop the run during games.
</p>

<p>
	I'm sure that coaches, owners, GM's, etc. wish that the players weren't required to go do press conferences after games.  The media decides who they want the team leader(s) to be and too many of them feel the need to ask questions that might stir up some dirt....instead of asking somewhat more benign questions.

	Thanks for sharing that Syd - Good stuff!  I'm starting to sound like more Tommy Chong instead of Tom Flugel.  Pluto is my favorite sports writer to read.. While he's a big fan - he keeps it real and he's always writing about areas of team I'm thinking about or have concerns/questions about.
</p>

<p>
	There is 1 little irony in that article; and I know I'm not the only one that caught it. I hope Schwartz goes back and clarifies with Myles that he only means take off the seat belts on the football field.

	New defense and playoffs/superbowl aspirations.  It certainly can't hurt for Myles to be there.

<p>
	Now the other side of the coin.  We don't know everything that's going on behind the scenes.  Myles is a smart veteran who may already has a handle on the new D schemes and when the time comes for training camp he'll be ready.

<p>
	I'm one that wants everyone at the voluntaries.  Especially if you're one of the 'stars' of the team.  To me, it sets the wrong example.  The word 'team' is supposed to mean 'everyone'.  The author doesn't care about Bito or Chubb not being there...but is upset that Myles isn't there.  He doesn't get to pick who the team leader is.  Once things get rolling, the players will notice who the real team leaders are.  And I'm sure some of 'em were in attendance.
</p>

<p>
	I agree with ballpeen.  I never thought of Myles as the team leader.  Or the team leader type.  The media et all have placed him in that roll.  And that's too bad because I don't think that roll suits him.  Landry was the leader type when he was here.  But that's not Myles.

<p>
	That's cool.  I just don't see the big deal.
</p>

<p>
	Maybe because I have never seen Myles as a leader.  He hasn't demonstrated that since he was drafted.  Some people just don't fit in to that mold, so why try at this point?  As long as he plays well, I don't care about the leader part.

		<p>
			And do what?  I am serious.  Standing around is being a leader?  Plus, who says Myles is or wants to be a leader?  You don't pin the leader tag on the donkey.  It just happens.  Some special teams player can emerge as a leader.  It doesn't have to be the best player.
		</p>

		<p>
			As fans we many times think the best player has to be the leader, but the players on the team determine who is the leader.

	The guy needs to get in shape, but shape for a person that big.  The reality is he isn't ever going to have to run more than 10-15 yards. Probably more like 5-10 yards before the back is past him and blocking becomes pointless. For guys like that, 20 yard sprints is what I would have them do .I think sometimes coaches and trainers have a 1 way fits all, and that isn't the case.

	I thought he should've retired after the <em>last</em> one.

	Probably going to happen no matter where he plays.  Once you have rattled your brain a few times the odds are pretty steep it will continue.  If it happens again, if I were him I would seriously consider retirement.  But, it may already be too late.  He may already be destined to being a drooler by the time he is 65.

	...this isn't Pluto:
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1e1e1e">
	According to CB<span> </span><strong>Denzel Ward,<span> </span></strong>the secondary won’t have the same chance for miscommunication this year:
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1e1e1e">
	<span style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#0f1419">Denzel Ward thinks the defense that Jim Schwartz brings will eliminate a lot of the miscommunication problems the defense has last year.</span>
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1e1e1e">
	There are positives and negatives to both types of systems. “Read-and-react” coverage allows for defenders to adjust to the offenses scheme as the play unfolds but it can lead to breakdowns like we have seen in Cleveland. The “we play what we play” coverage minimizes those miscommunications but doesn’t allow for flexibility to change based on what is happening in a play.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1e1e1e">
	Given the experience the last couple of seasons, Browns fans will happily accept a safer brand of coverage.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1e1e1e">
	Ward also noted that we are likely to see<span> </span><a href="https://twitter.com/camijustice/status/1663954406578978831" rel="external nofollow" style="background-color:transparent;color:#df6108">him playing in the slot more</a><span> </span>than in previous seasons. Much of that could be Schwartz looking to match up his cornerbacks with specific receivers. Long gone are times when receivers line up only on the left or right or only on the outside or inside.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#1e1e1e">
	One concern when Ward is inside is the physical toll that can have on a player as the slot corner has far more run-game responsibilities than those on the outside. In the slot, Ward is more likely to face offensive linemen and tight ends instead of receivers blocking him.
