I think the more pragmatic green energy enthusiasts are more in the R & D phase, just seeing how it can be used to supplement the grid and become more viable. 

Regardless of what you think about global warming, oil is a finite resource. There might be enough in the ground to last for decades or centuries, but eventually it will become scarce. And besides, when you start extracting large quantities of mass from the ground, what do you think is going to eventually happen? Ever played Jenga?
