I'm old school in the sense that there's nothing better to analyze than film. It gives you the why things happen on merely every play. It gives you situational tendencies of opponents.

This franchise made a REAL bold move going after Watson. At first it made sense UNTIL it was crystal clear they never really identified WHY he was so gotta-have that they played leap frog with unicorns around the enormous red flags about his character. 3 years into Watson being here - the Browns were still hiring and firing offensive coaches that were going to help design a more appropriate fit to Watson's skillset (THAT THEY NEVER IDENTIFIED ON FILM).

He made 2 or 3 Pro Bowls in Houston leading them to the playoffs twice inclusive of erasing a late 4th quarter deficit against Josh Allen & the Bills. There were things he was good at on film that the Browns just never identified. One could argue that the mental/psychological side of it were even bigger barriers. Whatever it may be - the Browns never showed anyone what it was they thought made him so gotta have. Houston knew what they wanted from him; and got it until they also learned what they didn't want. And, of course, here comes the Browns FO and Jimmy.

All that to say, the best informed decisions specific to your opponent have always come from film study. That's why Paul Brown was who he was at every level he coached. As far as what a HC wants to do choosing between going for it or kicking for points or punting it away for field position - coaches have always developed their strategies based on their personnel often inclusive of what they're up against (which again requires film for vulnerabilities to exploit or why punting/kicking is the better option). Hope some of that made sense.

Two peas in a pod. YOu don't think Mr. Analytics has anything to do with player selection? Go watch the movie Moneyball then. That was him and players selected & kept seemed to be quite a bit of it.

Sorry man, that wasn't a documentary.

Racism don't have a damn thing to do with it.. She's a hack reporter and a mouthpiece for the Browns... Her and Tony Grossi are an embarrassment... They have been such since the 80's... Bill Livingston and Bob Kravitz were just as bad in the late 70's through a better part of the 80's.. When they were writers for The Plain Dealer.. They were never the quality of someone like Rick Tellander (Chicago Tribune) or Frank DeFord (Washington Post) or even Bob Ryan (Boston Globe) who could be annoying at times... For me... The best Sportswriters in Cleveland were Bob August, Joe Menzer(Cavs) And the late great Hal Lebovitz.. All three of them had class.. And weren't wrapped into the latest sound bites or carried an agenda... They reported the facts regardless of whatever party affiliation they may have had.. Most of the Cleveland Media for the last 30 years have been a bunch of germs...

Or maybe the draft changed their plan. I don't think we ever thought Sanders would still be there in round 5. At that point he was worth any of the extra baggage, perceived or real. The 5th round is at that point where it is pretty easy to wash your hands and cut a player.

Some people are going to moan about cutting any drafted player but cutting a 5th rounder isn't going to cause any real backlash.

The flip side to this is a whole lot of people are going to be pissed if anybody else gets any kind of rep at QB. Sanders looked good, but it's way early to sell out and go all in.

I think that was the plan. He was to be Draft Pick '26's backup. Unless he turned out to be great. They had Gabriel as the #2 QB in the draft. In the 5th round they adjusted their plan.
