West Sider here--the only places I feel are truly dicey on the West Side now are the area near Denison from West to W 73rd, and deep in the Stockyards along Storer, and honorable mention to Madison between W 65th and W 85th at night. I've heard Brooklyn Centre can be rough, but I haven't been there often enough to know if that's still true. But I don't roll through those red lights. I can't think of anywhere on this side of town that I (petite white woman) wouldn't at least drive through now that I've lived here and know the area. West Eighties especially has really cleaned up over the last few years.

And that doesn't mean all those areas are really safe--plenty of gunshots where I currently live, for instance--just that I know the city well enough to know when things don't feel right. It seems like most of the crime around here is either petty or very violent BUT very targeted, so I rarely worry about our house being broken into or being mugged/assaulted as I walk around.

Actually it's a very true comment which fared very well in England this past fall. It's good advice for anyone visiting Europe. New York City is about as linguistically diverse as it gets so it is hard to hammer on someone that doesn’t speak English, Spanish, French, Farsi, etc.  I believe they are  more tolerant to tourists because NYC is made of people going to work in the city or people visiting as tourists (probably predominantly made up of tourists).  

I experience the same thing in San Diego.  I laugh because SD natives talk about how they have “midwestern friendliness”.  Yeah right - do you stop and change a tire besides the one time where fake boobs had a blow out on the road?  Do you invite your neighbor over for dinner?  Do you have block parties?  
Do you know where your neighbor works, etc.?  Very surface level interaction.  We are made up of more residents than tourists though…I don’t mind the repeated  “tourists” questions  I hate the way they drive and I hate that it is next to impossible to do a staycation here for lack of availability during peak seasons other than that it is all good. 

When they were here …I could never root for the Chargers.  The fans were so fair weather and unsupportive half the time.   Very few diehards

Normally I'd agree. Now in my brief time there (3 nights back in 2013)  the vendors and hotel personnel were fine, the general public were rude. Truly an unwelcoming population IMHO.
