The story centers around an older English tailor who studied in Saville Row, and he works diligently in his Chicago shop with the aid of his assistant.

The entirety of this film is set in his shop, and it digs somewhat deep into the art of tailoring. It would have made a good play in a live theater, but apparently that never happened.

Anyway, this tailor somehow falls into the clutches of the local Irish mob, and his shop is the drop off spot for deliveries and pickups. He does all of their tailoring of course, and they seem to view him as an innocuous and helpful guy.

This all takes place on the heels of Al Capone going down, so J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI are taking a greater interest in mob activities around this time, so the heat is high.

There’s also a territory dispute with another family, so that enters the mix too. The whole film is done with a handful of characters.

The film is really well done. Sort of a crime mystery with some twists. It’s simply done and well acted. The lead is played by Mark Rylance, who l’ve probably seen in stuff but don’t recall him having a lead role. He kills his role. His assistant is played by Zoey Deutch, who plays the lead in the earlier reviewed Voicemails for Isabelle.

it’s a slow burn so don’t expect a lotta action. I saw a review that described it as Hitchcockian, and l’s say that’s accurate.

i give it a solid B.

Reply to The Outfit (2022) on Tue, 03 Nov 2026 05:16:56 GMT

Need to see that movie. As Mark Rylance won an Oscar I think for "Bridge of Spies" with Tom Hanks.
