George Kokinis was fired Monday as general manager and escorted from Browns headquarters, according to league sources. The Browns are not confirming the reports.

Hours later, sources said Ernie Accorsi was hired as the team's GM. The move is a blast from the past for Browns' fans. Accorsi was the Browns' GM from 1985 to 1992.

He also served as GM of the Colts from 1982 to 83, and also worked in the Giants' front office from 1994 to 2004, including a stint as New York's GM from 1998 and on.

In 2004, he spearheaded a trade to get No. 1 pick Eli Manning from the Chargers.

Kokinis has been on the hot seat for more than three weeks, the source said. The ax falls one day after Browns owner Randy Lerner said he plans on hiring a strong football personality to run the Browns.

The firing comes at the start of the bye week.

Kokinis was hired Jan. 23 at the urging of Browns coach Eric Mangini. Lerner has said Mangini's job is safe for now.

More to come as details become available. Tuesday's print editions will have a full report.

Reply to Ernie Accorsi hired as New Browns GM on Wed, 04 Nov 2009 02:42:24 GMT

the new herald who the poster credits with the hiring of Accorsi is about an hour from cleveland in a little sesspool of a town painesville..Not exactly the bastion of cutting edge news... Lerner needs to hire a FOOTBALL guy as President of Football Operations (based on input from Accorsi & a team of knowledgeable consultants), then trust THAT person to hire a GM & go from there as far as the rest of the organization & selection of players, etc. Randy has not done a good job of evaluating his "hires", but then he is not from an NFL background & is ill prepared to make those decisions. I really think he may be ready to take those steps...at least I hope so, because with plenty of cap space & 11 draft picks, we are certainly in a position to take positive steps forward IF we have the management team in place to make the most of the opportunities that are going to be there.

The newest rumor I'm hearing out of Berea (and none of this has been verified yet) is that Accorsi is coming in to Cleveland not to become the GM but to work with Kosar so that he will be groomed for the job. Kosar has run a football team before (Arena league) so he does have a little experience - not in the NFL though. Also the arena team he ran went from a last place team to a playoff team in one year. I'm not saying that this qualifies him for the job yet, but with Accorsi to groom him I think it might work.
