It's kind of hard to compare LeFevour and Manning, they have two different styles of play.

Manning is an offensive wizard. He can read a defense completely before he even takes the snap, and call audibles to suit. Manning progresses through his reads quickly, and when things go to shit, he still maintains a calm demeanor and keeps his poise. Manning is the picture of poise in the pocket, just like Johnny U. A lot of that comes with experience, but for the most part, he was doing these things since his rookie year.

LeFevour, on the other hand, seems to have trouble progressing through his reads. In the Senior Bowl, as with all season, he seemed to rely on his feet when his primary receiver was covered. When things go to shit for LeFevour, he's looking on how to get out of the pocket, not at his receivers downfield. Don't get me wrong, he still is an amazing QB, his numbers scream that. He made 4.3 ass-billion plays on his feet, and that's an exact number. But, in the NFL, defensive tackles are as fast as linebackers, defensive ends/linebackers are as fast as cornerbacks and safeties, and cornerbacks and safeties are as fast as cheetahs. His speed isn't going to help him near as much on the pro-level.

Manning will sit in the pocket until the very last second, and then deliver a strike to his target, sacrificing his body in the process. To me, that's what makes a great quarterback. I'm not saying LeFevour doesn't do that, I'm just stating my opinion. LeFevour was a running QB in college, you can't deny that. If he can't throw on the run, that severly handcuffs him on the next level. Can he make the transition to the pros? Can he make all the pro-level throws? I don't know, we'll all have to find out. I think he'll do pretty good, personally. But not in the traditional QB sense, I would imagine.

Tim Couch Pulls Out

Reply to My push for Dan LeFevour on Mon, 01 Feb 2010 18:40:41 GMT

@<bdi>alo</bdi> said:
I think this sums it up well:

He had a beautiful throw for a TD Maddogg. I liked him 2nd best to Zac Robinson. The main difference I found in the 2 kids was when pressure moved the 2 kids out of the drop back - Robinson was looking downfield for receivers while LeFevour was only looking where to run. I thought there was more poise in Robinson and was pleasantly surprised by the zip in his passes.

However, when Lefevour was asked to execute a 5 step drop and throw to the flag pattern it was a perfect strike. I've learned over the years the NFL calls for QBs that can elude and improvise under pressure in the pocket. Our division rarely allotted us the time for 5 to 7 step drops. When we played Detroit - we got that kind of time and the results weren't horrible.

I think Robinson could be a 4th round gift if he doesn't elevate his stock. LeFevour looks like he'd require just a little more time and patience. He's got the speed but that doesn't mean he's got the speed reading down pat to go with it just yet. The good thing to know - is there are Tony Romo stories to be made out there if teams exercise patience. Parcells PROTECTED Romo to no end before he deemed him ready to rock.

Pike and Canfield are intriguing to me, but each needs to answer questions about his game: for Pike, it's mental toughness and the "system QB" q's; for Canfield, it's mobility and footwork - particularly his ability to shuffle & reset his feet while facing pressure. Both of those guys could be 3rd round options.

Also, keep an eye on Jarrett Brown; he's very raw but has McNabb-like physical tools. If we bring in McNabb, it'd be a good idea to draft Brown in the 4th & have him learn under Donovan for 2-3 years. I like him a lot, but he needs to have a good week to keep his stock from sliding.

I agree with you about Canfield. I live in Oregon and seen a lot of him. He has a strong arm and leadership skills. He really only had two weapons the last two years, the Rogers brothers. The brothers accounted for about 90% of their offense. He did a lot with little help from anybody else. His footwork needs improvement like you say. The Browns O-line would be a real benefit for him. He never had anybody as good as Mack or Thomas blocking for him. I think he could be worth a 4th rd. pick.

Big Chuck

Reply to My push for Dan LeFevour on Thu, 21 Jan 2010 15:37:55 GMT

@<bdi>dawgtracker</bdi> said:
Buying a bunch of tickets doesn't improve my chances?

Me too! We have ELEVEN draft picks this year so it's not gonna feel like 08 when we only had 5 (and no day 1) or heading into the offseason before 09 with only 4 draft picks to our name. We can definitely draft 2 QBs for this QB starved team. Green Bay did that with Flynn and Brohm just a couple years ago when they were getting ready to finally see what they had in Aaron Rodgers.

The injury to his non throwing arm should be okay. What if we could get him in the third or maybe fourth round....isn't he worth taking a chance on? I just don't want a qb in the first or second round......I think this guy could have potential.

still makes him a system QB

BuckeyeBulldozer28

Reply to My push for Dan LeFevour on Wed, 20 Jan 2010 21:22:49 GMT

@<bdi>riffer-x</bdi> said:

I'm in favor of drafting two QB's from 3rd on down, we have 11 picks. Whether it's Quinn or a McNabb type brought in these guys can be developed under Holmgren's expertise. Makes sense to me, and please don't bring up Ratliff. If he was any good whatsoever he would have gotten some snaps at some point this year. Really, the guy shouldn't have made the roster out of preseason, Bartel was better.

The more shots you take the more chance you have of hitting on a real find, and we know how these MAC QB's go.

Love the 2 QB idea. Personally, I've been flirting with the idea of bringing in Jarrett Brown in the 4th and Mike Kafka in the 6th. Brown will remind Heckert of a raw Donovan McNabb; Holmgren might see some Hasselbeckian qualities in Kafka.

Those two would make a lot of sense if we acquire a veteran QB capable of starting for the next two to three years. If it's Quinn again next year, we might want to use a higher pick on someone who could start in 2011.

Alo

Reply to My push for Dan LeFevour on Wed, 20 Jan 2010 18:03:19 GMT

I remember when Bubby Brister was going to change the game. Peens is stuck on this system he wants for Timmy God to succeed, but even if Tebow does work out he won't change the way the game is essentially played.

Riffer X

Reply to My push for Dan LeFevour on Wed, 20 Jan 2010 17:46:12 GMT

I think we are all overlooking the fact that this year's qb class is pretty weak. A lot of these guys who are 2-3 rounders would be 4-6 rounders prob next year. I don't see any reason we should reach for a qb in this draft. Get a vet through FA (Pennington) to compete with Quinn and let them duke it out for the starting job next year.

IMO, we should build the rest of our team first, so that when we draft a qb, he has other facets of the team to rely on while he goes through growing pains. I hate to say it, but we should do what the ravens, stoolers, and jets did for their teams.

FloridaBrownsFan

Reply to My push for Dan LeFevour on Wed, 20 Jan 2010 18:22:03 GMT

@<bdi>hoorta</bdi> said:

I totally respect your opinion, but assuming they're all there (McCoy and Bradford won't be) let me twist your arm- who do we take with one of our third round picks?

And I'll let you wait until after the Senior Bowl to answer.

Yeah, the Senior Bowl will be very important.

Alo

Reply to My push for Dan LeFevour on Wed, 20 Jan 2010 17:34:21 GMT

@<bdi>ballpeen</bdi> said:
That gets to my point about people being stuck in the box.

i see what you're saying, but i don't think it's going to happen as fast as you think. michael vick was supposed to be the guy who did that and he only had a couple of good years. jmarcus russell never even had a semi-decent year. look at the top two qb's of the decade: manning and brady. they are total statues. sure big ben, favre, brees and a few others can move around, but the run first offense will fail in the nfl just like it's failed before. linebackers and d-linemen are just too fast in the nfl to let the qb get outside on a consistent basis. they know how to contain unlike college kids.

ClevelandFanForLife
