Another red herring. The comments were about trophy hunting, not about herd management. The government decides to thin the herd by allowing more deer to be killed so as to alleviate overpopulation, that's one thing. Gunther goes out in the woods to kill a wild boar because that face and them tusks is gonna look cool hanging up in the den is quite another. If he wants to eat the boar, that's fine; I've heard great things about wild boar. But if he's just doing it to have a trophy and is going to discard the body, it's something else.

Trying to conflate trophy hunting with herd management while simultaneously condemning dog fighting because it involves killing animals most people like is just a problematic rhetorical move. If you're killing the boar just because you want to put its head up on the wall, you're just as much of a schmuck as the guy who kidnaps Snoopy to train his fighting dogs; you've just had the good sense to pick a form of animal cruelty that most people don't care about.

    Dennis

Actually Dency, if you look, some of the comments were about hunting in general and did not separate trophy hunting from hunting for food.

I should have read more closely. Sorry about the mistake, Riffer.

  • I don't know anybody that hunts anything that doesn't eat it or give it way to someone who does, that's the culture. Even if you take it to the butcher shop and just take the head to be mounted, it's going to be eaten by someone. Changing a dog fighting subject into ignorant comments about hunting is where it all started. The fact is, you can hunt and are allowed to by law under strict provisions, so what is the point again? And yes, I'm sure there some sick dudes out there who shoot things just to shoot them, but they are no different than dog fighters with the exception they're not actually torturing the animal, just shooting it unless it survives to die slowly. I get all that stuff.

Tell you what, come on out and hang out with some good ole boy hunters sometime and then go hang out with some dogfightin' types and you can form your own opinion on what kind of people are what.

As far as the work thing, apparently you didn't read what I said. I said if Goodell chooses to let him play, he still must be signed by someone or end up somewhere with someone who will pay him. Ultimately that is up to the particular organization. If no organization chooses to do that, he doesn't have a job. At that point he's relegated to looking for work like a normal person. Guess how easy it is for a normal person to find a decent job with a felony? It's one of my problems with our judicial system. We send guys to prison and try to "rehab" supposedly, and then won't let them earn a decent living when they get out Dennis. What makes Vick any different, because he can play football?

If Mickey Rourke goes out and pisses off Hollyweird, he doesn't get hired to make a movie for ten years. Finally, he gets The Wrestler gig, which is fine. Vick's issue is by the time this would ever blow over with the money paying public he will be done. He's already missed a year of top conditioning. If an organization says screw the fan base we're taking this guy anyway to win, it would become a PR nightmare not worth his value. That is my opinion.

Wow ..I would root the Niners and Singletary on if they pulled this one out...Vick and Gore would do damage in that backfield..

Or is this a move a desperate perennially bad franchise makes that always backfires?

From a PR standpoint this will backfire horribly. Can you imagine the media hype and the crowds?

Why would any team want that headache?

It won't be a matter of picking him up and having him slip quietly into the NFL. It'll be a major thing and a major headache. It would no longer be about the Niners. It would be about Mike Vick.

Good question. I'm not sure if I'm hearing rain drops or the sound of Loverboy's tears hitting the ground. This has to be terrible news about the reality of another available QB that might be seen in higher regards than his DA. Poor Lummy! In the end, if DA doesn't bring us better exchange value than Luke McCown or Charlie Frye - the best place for Lummy to show his face is going to be IN the sand.

    - Tom F. (DA threw the Ratbird Defense 4 TDs alone last year so I doubt a smart defensive coach like Ryan sees DA as HIS kind of QB. I've been wrong before though)
