Like coaching, mentoring is as effective as the recipient is willing to accept it.
In most sports or even businesses think it might depend on the organization, teacher and pupil and can be very important IF they do it right.
Remember too the young guys want to take old guys' jobs so not everyone may be on-board with the sharing concept in the limited number of professional jobs available AND the big money involved.
Internships and apprentice programs do work and help the young people to assimilate more quickly.
