We disagree on a lot of stuff Steve, but I'm with you on this one.  On a personal level- I have a relative who's on "permanent disability" that's totally capable of finding one of the jobs that I see posted every day just driving around. But he'd rather freeload off of the government, because he's playing up that back injury for all it's worth- for the last 20 years.

 Well honestly we are  kinda talking about 2 different (though they undoubtedly overlap) things here but I understand.  Extended unemployment versus permanent disability. I think some people here might get the mistaken idea that I have no sympathy for people in need. I most certainly do. And I have no problem with the government helping somebody out who's come on up rough patch. Even if the rough patch lasts for life. It makes me angry that the large percentage of those that scamming the system make it harder for those people actually in need.

 The situation you mentioned to me in private is certainly one of those cases. 

 As to that permanent disability? I know a handful of people on disability; at least half could easily do a job. A few of them could not. I  had some work done to my rental and one of those people asked me why the heck didn't I call him?

The difficulty in enacting social welfare programs is the broad brush you have to use. It almost facilitates inequity and fraud.  The flip side is you’s spend more money trying to insulate these programs than the fraud/inequity costs you.  That isn’t to say the government should innovate.  For those of us who are old enough, we remember food stamp booklets.  The plastic EBT card reduced fraud but again it’s not a perfect system.  Conspiracy theorists will say this is simply a Democrat plot to buy votes. I believe it’s the limitation of government and a way to placate a segment of our society that would ultimately remain unproductive.
