Sounds like the Jim Kelly, Bruce Smith combo.

Jim Kelly was not the #10 overall QB during his era.

I was speaking more in general terms.  I wasn't cracking the sport almanac.

  • According to cal every single player drafted by the Browns has skills, smarts and great character and work ethic.

It's amazing how many Browns draft classes have been bad.

Admittedly he isn't all that wrong.  The red-flags with major character concerns - Greg Little, Manziel, Callaway, etc etc... haven't seen those types of blunders with Young Barry.

Edit: except the Manziel thing, don't let him fool you there.  He raved about that guy having the "it" factor.

    still 1 of 2 ain't bad.

Pro Football Focus has high expectations for Mayfield, ranking him as the tenth best quarterback for the 2021 season:

Give Coach of the Year Kevin Stefanski a ton of credit for how he helped set up his quarterback for success. The Browns protected Mayfield early in the season, but when Stefanski opened up the playbook, Baker excelled. He was the second-highest-graded quarterback in the league from Week 7 through the playoffs. He also ranked in the top five from a clean pocket, on standard dropbacks and on early downs for the entire season — all of which are important and stable metrics.

There are a couple of interesting names listed just ahead of Mayfield with Lamar Jackson and Matt Ryan ranked eighth and ninth. It will be interesting if Mayfield is able to build on his 2020 season will he threaten the top five of these kinds of lists?

    10 is about right...

    I wonder who #3 was? 😁

    3.

He led the league in overall passing grade (94.7) and passing grade on 20-plus-yard throws (99.5) in 2020 en route to taking home the MVP award.

******* is a stud, playing with timing and rhythm we haven’t seen from him in years. His average time to throw was his lowest in over a decade. The most impressive thing about ******* in 2020 was his patience with the offense and ability to let it work for him. He managed to stay on course and operate the attack while sprinkling in his playmaking ability. There is no doubt ***** *** is primed for a Super Bowl run, but that all depends on if the team can smooth over relations with *******.

Baker Mayfield Ranked Among Best Deep-Passers In NFL

  • Well..... deep passes are harder for the DL to tip... 😉

I think we all have to remember that even more than was the case in 2020 Baker's main priority in 2021 is to not fuck up. The clarity of this emphasis as 2020 progressed was stark.

The reason for the "even more"? The (at least on paper) improved D.

Will there be games where Baker will have to win them for us? Yup... and could be the case as early as Week 1... but should be far fewer than those he simply has to not lose for us.

The Regular season and its opponent are Bakers opportunity to become a better QB at very little risk. He will get some opportunities against good defenses.

The path to the SB and January football.
KC, Buffalo, Balt. Are gonna score on our D and they will make Baker beat them.  The WRs are going to need to beat single coverage and he’s going to need to deliver on the opportunities.

    Congrats!

    • HC: Robert Saleh at +2200 caught my eye... NYJ looks set to improve on their 2-14 record... only issue is it is gonna be tough road for NYJ to eek into playoffs. A couple of Saleh's AFCE brethren, Flores +1600, McDermott +1600, look attractive as well, but how can you resist Bill "I'm a Man on a mission with a reloaded roster" Belichick at +1800?
    • DPOY: DL dominate lately (Watt and Donald) so DuPree at +6600 under Vrabel in TN and/or Clowney at same odds.
    • CBPOY: Teboe +2000, if you have to pick one... word is he's really looking the part of a TE on OTAs and you know Urban loves him.
    • DROY:  LBs rule this one... Cox +4000 next to Parsons in Big D looks enticing.
    • OROY: Only position to spoil the recent QB run is RB... Sermon +2000 in SF looks well positioned among the longer shots, but Harris +1000 in PTG deserves strong consideration.
    • MVP (a/k/a The QB Award) : Mayfield +3300 jumps out.

    That was fun!

It is fun & thanks.. It's crazy early, to be tossing money on players, but now's the time to like some odds...here's a few i might consider?

Kamara looks low on that mvp list. McCaffrey too.I really like Kingsbury & McDermott coaching odds.. I can't do Bill with no QB commitment relying on Newton or Mac Jones yet. Jets will be better, but not Bills/Mia. better..

Garrett/Donald..while i also like the sleepers of the Bosa boys & that damm Chase Young? i almost favor Chase on them odds? ?

Rest i see as a 4 horsemen race...

Rookie's? I like Parson's/Paye/Collins & JOK  on Defense.. Offense? Trevor/Wilson/Fields or Najee Harris..but i see your points on Sermon in a Shanney system & a better OL..

I too, love the Mayfield bet for MVP ?..MaHolmes/ Lamar/Allen makes 4..(and Kyler Murray could slip into this race before he comes into Cleveland)

i'd like to lock-in over the Memorial Day weekend... Talks me in's* or outs* are always welcome...

Flores at +1600 looks really good. If Tua steps up that’s a pretty dang good team. Rumblings are that he will

Urban +2500 that roster is overhauled and if TLaw is what he is that’s a big time turnaround too.

    Defense

Von Miller +3300 maybe a rebound year

    Comeback

Jimmy G. +1600  I don’t think he’s that bad.  He’s gonna play their rookie is green.  He could surprise.

    MVP

I don’t think you overthink it.  I go Mahomes +350.  Maybe a small lottery ticket on our guy to Baker at +3300.  I get the sense he’s gonna have more eye popping numbers this year.

Pitts and JOK for Rookie of the Year

Volume for rookies is a big deal, especially DROY. That being the case, taking Young JOK would be a homer of homer picks if you honestly want to make some $.

I don’t think so...and that award is probably the most wide open award.  No one stands out to me

And LBs get the award - see Darius Leonard.

If JOK flashes and looks good in preseason.  Why wouldn’t he be a three down guy? And  He will only benefit from the attention put on Garrett. Maybe we see the splash plays like we saw at ND with his athleticism- TD, TFLs, Sacks, INT, FF

I still say Kelly was over rated. Sugar huddle made him.

175 INTs in 160 career games. Not good.

So from 2000 to 2009, 7 times the DROY was won by off-ball linebackers.

    Since 2010 to 2020....?  Only Twice with  2012 & 2017.

I presume you have ideas as to why that is.  Hell, the award has been won by as many corners and in that same previous decade timespan - Marcus Peters & Marshon Lattimore.   IDL & Edge have been the most common winners.

So for JOK to come in and not have an obvious starting role, as evidenced by his "working in on 3rd downs" comment during mini- camp, it's easy to understand that he's ready to be a full time athlete.  However he isn't quite ready to be an every down WILL backer.... Yet.   You're right, things could change in camp and pre-season. But I wouldn't lock in any bet this early until I saw otherwise.

Jadeveon Clowney is not working this hard to go out on the field and phone it in. He's working this hard to dominate with Myles Garrett.

Interesting move.  Classically, your MIKE backer wears the helmet mic...   Not sure how comfortable coach Vance feels putting a rookie in that situation along with a minor position switch.

I suppose because of Hick's salary, and injuries in the past, and his size - 6'1", 236 - they went ahead and make the change, but it does put pressure on the rookie. Hicks is quite productive - it would have made more sense to let Zaven Collins EARN the starter position. If it was as soon as the first regular season game, so be it.
