Theres already a medical personnel shortage. That's why they're able to call the hospitals "overloaded" with covid patients when they're nowhere near capacity.

Look I have been communicating for some time with other people in my situation from all over the World. The people I know in Australia and Canada have had the same results as I have with significantly less cost incurred and no insurance company attempting to deny everything they can forcing them to spend hours on the phone per week asking doctors to appeal on the grounds of medical necessity and sending appeal letters to a bunch of fucking soulless beauracrats.

Yes our wonderful awesome American health care is still filled with beauracrats except they don't have to answer to anyone so they can bend you over and fuck your ass with impunity.

Beauracrats in the he hospital system. Beauracrats in the insurance companies. They don't even have to work together.

It's garbage. Pure and simple garbage.

In the socialized medicine countries you might have to wait in a list to get an elective procedure like bariatric surgery or a knee replacement. That might be something that is true. But when your issue is an immediate medical necessity you get in and it doesn't ruon your finances.

I don't want to see anybody bankrupted because of illness. I still think everybody should pay something for their coverage. Sliding scale is fine with me. And speaking of anecdotes I spent probably a total of 2 years in Canada the last year's of the band's travel.

Since you apparently have a problem with anecdotes I suppose you have hard data that proves Canadians die waiting in a bread line for life saving treatments.

By the way as a self-employed Entertainer I paid for my own most of my life... a little over a thousand bucks a month until Medicare kicked in.

I’ll chime in on this one, my sister in law has 35 years in at the Cleveland Clinic scheduling surgeries.

The last time we spoke about this (pre-pandemic) she said she schedules on average 15 to 25 Canucks weekly.

She said that these were for urgent or life threatening procedures.

I used to be a fan of Socialized medicine, but when I found out about the 4-6 month wait times for surgeries….it kind of changed my mind.

  • Holy shit.  Did they catch it at an early stage hopefully?

Stage 3. Very aggressive. Went from nothing at all to stage 3 in like six months. But it was removed successfully so at the moment I'm classified NED (no evidence of disease) who knows what the future holds though.

I waited four months for surgery with stage 3 cancer here in America. With insurance. Shit happens.

I really think medicare for all is probably the way to go. Everybody pays with their taxes, so there's your sliding scale. The public housing crowd was never going to pay anyway. They don't pay now either, and perversely they get excellent health care - a far better deal than you or I.

Making some things very much worse is the usual. But giving it to everyone - is bs. It will bankrupt medicare.

Most of us have been paying into it for years/decades before being 65 and getting it. It is excellent, with a good solid supplemental insurance.

Flood the program with many, many tens of millions of those who never paid into it...disaster.

Emergency rooms will be flooded with patients who don't/can't wait for dr appointments, more and more dr's etc will refuse medicare patients entirely....

Republicans and Joe Biden are making a huge mistake by focusing on cost. The implication is that government-run health care would be good if we could afford it.

    "

Of course, policymakers should continue to talk about how expensive Medicare for All is. A $32-trillion price tag is concerning. But they should take care to emphasize that, even if we had the tax dollars necessary to fund it, those dollars aren’t the greatest cost of socialized medicine.

  • so...adding 32 TRILLION to our current national debt?

The national turmoil and despair will be historic.

    https://usdebtclock.org/

So... 28.6 Trillion in national debt and climbing fast... plus the 3.5 trillion the left wants to pass for "social architecture" ...plus 32 trillion for "medicare for all".....

    =

American economic CRASH and BURN. Think venezuela. Think far, far worse than the depression.....

I understand. You're a long ways, I take it, from retiring and getting medicare and a great supplemental insurance. I hope you are going to be fine. The medical technology they have now is fascinating. But expensive. I honestly don't know what the answer is, but there needs to be one.

I think a good compromise would be for some form of socialised basic primary medical/dental/vision care. Many horrible diseases arise from not being caught early or from minor complications being allowed to progress to something more serious because people can't afford doctor's co-pays. Maybe a basic level of taxpayer-funded medical care with privately bought supplemental insurance for more aggressive conditions could strike a balance for everyone.

More controversially, I wouldn't necessarily be against shifting Social Security taxes from retirement to help fund the socialized medicine/Medicare plan. Many people who are old enough to collect SS are the ones who use Medicare the most and have the highest proportion of cost when it comes to Medicare anyway. It's time to let people be responsible grown ups when it comes to their own retirement planning, and I think the money would be better used funding a basic Medicare for all anyway.

It's the same deal on Social Security supplemental insurance. Once they accept you at age 65 (they have to regardless of any pre existing conditions) - as long as you don't try and change plans, you can't be dropped regardless.  MHO is if you can collect Social Security at age 62- you should be able to go on Medicare at the same age. Incremental to getting "Medicare for All"....

Wah!!! It will balloon the National Debt. Republicans have gotten to the point their "no new taxes" mantra is ridiculous. You don't get something for nothing.  I'll give you one prime example- and it pertains to the Infrastructure bill.  The last time the Federal gas tax- 18.4 cents a gallon- was raised was in 1993.  Just allowing for inflation since then, it should be over 30 cents a gallon. But try to get Republicans to add a nickel a gallon to that to pay for infrastructure? Forget it.... (that's about a buck more for a 20 gallon fill up)

The real purchasing power of the federal gas tax has declined by nearly 45 percent since 1993

  • Well, you started out good, Hoorta, then you ended poorly.

You don't have to raise tax rates when you can grow the economy and get far more tax revenue just like that.

But your stupid Biden is crashing the economy.
