It's official. Mangini is NOT telling the Vikes who will start at QB
-
I have said this before, and I guess I am going to say it again....
Mangini is trying to do EVERYTHING HE CAN to get that 1st win in week 1.
He has not played S.Rogers all camp...meaning he is hoping to have him completely fresh, and how he is going to use him in the scheme a secret.
There was lot's of talk about a 4-6 D, but little shown in camp...so maybe adding Rogers puts that into play.
He has hedged about his rotation with the RB's...nobody has been slated as the pure #1 back.
He has not even HINTED at who was the #2 WR. Is it Furrey, MoMass or Robo? No word. We are assuming MoMass...but Furrey could easily be the guy.
Come to think of it...there is not ONE SINGLE PLAYER who as been NAMED the starter. We assume a few (JT, Steiny, etc), but NONE have been named.
One thing I remember Daboll saying early on about the offense, was that the PLAYERS would be changed out to exploit mismatches. In other words...the #2 WR this week may not even play next week.
As for the QB thing itself...come on. He said the PLAYERS would know later (which may have been 15 minutes after the news conference). THEY will know. THEY will prepare. THEY will be ready.
Just because a bunch of whiner media and fans don't know doesn't mean SQUAT.
Oh, and saying both should prepare like they are starting...that is the way ALL players should prepare...because you never know when an injury will put you in the game.
With the fragile psyche that has dominated Cleveland, getting a win in week 1 could easily turn into 2-0 (Denver the following week) going into Baltimore. Don't you think a 2-0 team would have a better chance (psychologically) than a 1-1 or 0-2 team to go in and win in Baltimore?
I for one am all for the secrecy. Besides, it's downright fun to try and see if I can guess what he is really planning. 🥷

I think Cribbs is the number two guy.
-
And another thing about Mangini. Every day that goes by without THE QUARTERBACK, being announced is another day that Childress and company can't zero in on a QB they'll plan around. Mangini said very early on, he won't discuss injuries either so the next opponent can't specifically prepare for whether that player will play or not. The QB situation is no different. I swear, these fcuking reporters all have amnesia or can't connect the dots.
If Mangini wants to take every opportunity he can to mess with another team then great!! At least he appears that FOOTBALL ACTUALLY MATTERS TO HIM!!!! Last year was disgusting to watch. 73,000+ fans getting their hearts cut out watching 53 lazy pricks go through the motions. I'm glad training camp was tough, I'm glad S. Smith, Hood et al were pissed, I'm glad the media's pissed but most of all I'm glad Mangini is doing everything he can to light a fire under this teams ass and make it grow some fangs for the first time in decades....there....I'm done.
Sorry more editing but this is days before the opener and I'm fcukin' jacked!!!!
What have we seen so far with our O and our D?....V A N I L L A!!!! You know Mangini hasn't showed everything they've installed. Mark it down, the horn-heads are going to have their hands full.
-
It's still funny to see all the people who think Mangini doesn't have a clue what he is doing. I think it's pretty obvious that is what he is trying to make you and everyone else believe.
-
This, much like the decision to keep Ratliff over Bartel, is making me worry that the dreaded combination of brains & ego is getting in the way of smarts. I hope it works, but I share many of the same concerns as the posters above. Particularly, the notion that not knowing who our QB is going to be will throw the extremely solid Vikes D into a tailspin on Sunday. I think they can manage.
-
If we did know who the starting qb is how does that make anyone feel better?
Who gives a shit? Oh I know who gives a shit...all the fans who took sides in the qb race and want some sort of personal validation that they backed the right horse in the race.
I have to say I like mangini, much better than I liked the human milk-dud Romeo..who NEVER struck me as knowing what the fcuk was going on.
for what it's worth(which isn't much) watching sportscenter earlier I saw both merle hodge and hasselbeck endorse DA as the starter.

OK, OK. I'm with you. We only really have one choice, and that's to roll with it.
Heading into Baltimore 2-0 would be big.
I hope he has other surprises then. A bunch of stuff for Cribbs maybe. WildDawg. Reverses. Counter plays, whatever it takes.

Here is the ESPN Outsiders view on it:
Timeline for QB announcement
11:40AM ET
Cleveland Browns
Top Email
While he did say that he's made his decision, and is going to talk to Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn in the near future to discuss his plans for the team's starting QB job, Browns coach Eric Mangini is sticking to his guns, and will not be telling the public which man has won the competition until just before kickoff on Sunday, as per the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Asked about the process by which he chose the starter, Mangini told the Plain Dealer, "It was thorough and detailed and we looked at the whole body of work. It was extensive. I feel strongly about the improvement both guys made."
With the starter likely to get all the reps with the first-team offense this week, we can only hope that there's a Browns player with an overactive urge to Tweet.

Quinn is the safer choice
"Anderson outperformed Quinn last year, with a -11.9% DVOA to Quinn's -23.1% DVOA. Of course, neither of those performances are what you'd call exciting. Even in Anderson's breakout 2007 season, he was essentially a player with three huge games (against Cincinnati, Miami, and St. Louis) and then the usual Derek Anderson performance the rest of the way. There's simply not much there unless he's playing a really dismal defense. Quinn, at least, has yet to get the playing time to prove that he's a disappointing quarterback. So he'd be our choice, but as Eric Mangini showed with his handling of the Pennington/Favre situation last year, picking the right quarterback isn't exactly his strong suit." - Bill Barnwell

Tweet from Schefter:
Just sent to ESPN: Lions HC Jim Schwartz announces his starting QB decision - Matthew Stafford. Your turn, Eric Mangini.
-
Mangini is just a control freak and likes keeping everyone asking. I guess he likes the attention.
A lot of football knowledge here. It's easy to understand that have the starter get as many reps/practice with first string as possible, is much more of an advantage than keeping the Vikings wondering.

PFT betting it'll leak out by tonight with 6 p.m. as the over-under.

Makes sense. I have a hard time imagining no-one finding out aside from Mangini and the two QBs. From a controlling the message perspective, it seems like it would make sense to have the meetings, keep the guys in the back--I dunno, make up some nonsense about watching film or something--then go call the media guys and announce it yourself. If he does the "You'll know when I want you to know" thing and it leaks as he's telling people that, it won't look good. It won't be horrible, but it would still be a problem.

People aren't pissed because they think it hurts things and this crap about the team needing to know the starter is.
People are pissed because they want to know and the suspense is killing them.
That's all this is.

Bullshit. Anyone who thinks it isn't Quinn is lying to themselves. It's because Mangini's playing a stupid game against a team that doesn't give a shit who we start at QB. Brad Childress (probably the worst coach in the NFL) is laughing at how pathetic this is.

No matter how sure we are it's Quinn, we won't rest comfortabely until it's announced. Why be so mad if it's not hurting ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING ELSE? There's nothing to be mad or care about here except that people don't like that small seed of fear, however tiny, that Anderson actually will get this frickin' job. People want it the fcuk announced.
Kinda like how you have to say I Love You to a girlfriend/wife non-stop even though they know it's true regardless - they need the reassurance.
No matter how stupid the "pointless game" that Mangini is playing is against a team that "doesn't give a shit about who we play at QB", it doesn't hurt absolutely anything other than crybaby fans who can't wait another 6 days to find out for 100% sure who the starter is and erase those tiny seeds of doubt in their stomach.
It came straight from Mangini's mouth that as a defensive coach is makes it significantly harder to gameplan for - guess what? I think Mangini would know. He's got a little more NFL defensive coaching experience than the rest of us. And as I said, even if it doesn't, what does it hurt to try? Honestly? It makes fans pissed who want it officially announced, but as long as the starter is getting starter reps, that is ALL that matters.
The only God damn thing a public announcement would accomplish is giving Mary Kay Cabot something to write about and releiving the suspense of fans that they claim isn't there because they "know" Brady Quinn is the starting QB. If there was no doubt about it, you wouldn't giving a flying fcuk whether he announced it or not anyway.
Believe me, I want it to be Quinn. But I'm willing to endure 6 more days of a small, miniscule amount of worry that it'll be DA if it means we'll have even the SLIGHTEST advantage against the Vikings.
And the man that would know, Eric Mangini, says it will.

In the competition for who gets the leak... I like the OBR. They have a few solid player connections (or claim to) and they'll get the inside word. I'm thinking PFT then steals that story.Luvbergh will get any "leak" first, via rectal osmosis.

You guys kill me with your Assumptions about mangini....hE HAS DONE NOTHING DIFFERENT FROM DAY 1, HAS BEEN CONSISTENT WITH HIS WORD AND DEED. hE ISN'T GONNA TELL ANYONE ANYTHING THAT MIGHT GIVE ANYONE A SLIGHT ADVANTAGE...pERIOD! aS SOMEONE SAID IT ONLY HURTS THE FANS THAT need TO KNOW! OOPS...just looked up and saw the caps....sorry golf...lol
-
We have waited all offseason to know who the starting QB is going to be what is one more week? People need to just chill out.

Expect one of the national guys like Jay Glazer, Adam Schefter, or Peter King to break it.
