    and the cap is expected to go way up in the next two years

    12M dead on the 2022 & 7.5M dead on the 2023 caps thanks to the guys we've released or contracts that were already spread out over those years.  Classic example is Clowney playing last year for 3.5 on last year's cap and 3.5 on the 2022 cap.  And the Baker deal isn't made yet!

    12-15 dead a year is really not sustainable.. Yes, the cap "goes up" - but not an infinite amount.

    Can't say that top players aren't coming to Cleveland any more, though!

    Other thing I look for moving forward regarding cap success is being able to take those mid-to-late-round picks [at whatever position] and improve them enough to become not just starters but stars.. Teller is probably the first/best example of that.  This item looks at the coaching staff's teaching ability which hasn't been considered enough in the discussions of both cap management and long-term team success.

    Coaching ability impacts a team's drafting strategy because with better coaches we could draft the guys who are judged to have higher athletic "ceilings" and thus as a team our own performance ceiling would be greater.. whereas if we have to take college guys who aren't as athletic because we can't count on our staff to walk and chew gum at the same time, then we get LB's who can't cover in space, WR's who can't beat press, etc.  Pay Callahan whatever he's asking for plus about 500k, he's worth all of it.  I don't know enough about the rest -- here's hoping they can get someone dominant to coach up the young DL.  Myles and Denzel were likely always going to be superstars, staff gets some but very few points for those..

    Obviously it's not an infinite amount but it went up 25 million this year and with the new TV deals it is forecasted to go up more than that each of the next two years.

    However my point remains comparing ramsey to ward isn't apples to apples as when ramsey was given is 20 mil a year the cap was significantly lower than when ward got his 20.1 million a year. In very basic and elementary terms the year ramsey signed a deal that took up 10.9% of the cap and this year the deal ward signed takes up 9.6%

  • With Ward on board this likely means Greedy and Hill are gone after this season…so this is where the cheap young drafted talent needs to fill in and make a similar impact.  I see a day 2 pick either this year or next at Corner.

    This is a big part people are overlooking. Jalen ramsey was extended in 2020 when the cap was going down and got 100 million. Ward got 500k more and the cap is expected to go way up in the next two years.  Corners will be getting 120 for 5 years in the next two years and if you look at it that way this is not a bad deal at all. Someone earlier asked how the browns were going to pay people with all this money flying around and the answer is simply watch the salary cap grow

    It's been that way forever.  Every new contract is aimed at the last best contract. Just a stepping stone process.

  • Last year we signed depth….the next few years we have to draft it.  That’s the difference.

    But now we have some of the most important pieces at some of the most important positions locked up for a good run the next 4-5 years.

    we just need an immediate contributors at the DE, DT, WR, K spot.

    The DE spot can be Clowney.

    I still can't believe gm's passed on corner AJ Green from Oklahoma St not being drafted.. In year two, AJ Green saw 179 snaps at corner & 189 on ST's last season..with a

    86.2 overall grade from PFF....

    AJ should now see the huge MJ Stewart reps... these are the decisions they gotta get right ?

    And that's always been the case for top teams.. Round 3 and later is where Ozzie Newsome made his rep drafting athletic D backups who fell because they'd need training-up for serious contribution.  This training up is also the justification for keeping highly-paid coaches.

    Getting low-level-starter production [and/or quality sub package] from a round 4+ is where the team success will be, both to cover for injuries and to trade while still on rookie contract for future higher picks.  Or of course to let the stars go at the end of their career.  These guys will always be traded/released and so we'll have to get used to keeping the stars and a production line of backups.  The train only stops if we repeat the 2014/2015 fails on all picks.

    Highly paid coaches AND they were selective with the veteran players they kept…the guys that ultimately hold the rookies accountable and show the way…talking about guys like Suggs, Ed Reed, etc.  they paid second contracts  to veterans that played well obviously and had an attitude that they will continue to earn their way each year.   The Rooks respond to coaching of course but older guys and their work ethic and demand for excellence pave the way

    I'm a numbers guy   -but-  I just can't get over the 21st century professional football and sports in general way of doing business especially the NFL  cap-ology.

    Like this case with Mr Ward, OK we're only going to pay you $1M this year with a $4M signing bonus (we hope you can get by on that].  That way we can clear $8.3M  more in cap space,  don't worry you'll get way more in the future.   Truly amazing numbers !

    -Or- you can play a season in the USFL for $50,000 and like it just to play football.    😆

    ~~~~~~  $$$$ ~~~~~~
    OK and now the fine print :
    Current Contract
    Denzel Ward signed a 5 year, $100,500,000 contract with the Cleveland Browns, including a $20,000,000 signing bonus, $71,250,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $20,100,000. In 2022, Ward will earn a base salary of $1,035,000 and a signing bonus of $20,000,000, while carrying a cap hit of $5,035,000 and a dead cap value of $26,100,000.
  • Speaking of rolling the dice on DB depth.. Earl Thomas wants to get back on the field
    PFF earl thomas 2019 -- That ain't shabby. He's achieved zero snaps since then.
    I haven't watched tape analyzing him in Baltimore.. does he have anything left, or would rostering him just be keeping us from finding the next Money Mitch?
    Yeah besides this article I heard something about him wanting to get back on the gravy train elsewhere.  Worth it at the right price  ?
    Besides cap space do the BROWNS have any more head case space left on the team  ?   Worth a shot  ?
    .......With a brash and physical style, Thomas was once considered one of the best safeties in the NFL, having been named first-team All-Pro from 2012 to 2014 as a member of the Seattle Seahawks' Legion of Boom. Thomas' relationship with the Seahawks, however, became strained in 2018 when he flashed his right middle finger toward coach Pete Carroll while being carted off with a broken leg.....
    That hurts because I loved Earl's game at Texas and wanted the Brownies to draft him so damn bad.
    His biggest success was playing in  C3 heavy schemes like Seattle, but he also displayed his I.Q. and versatility in Baltimore where their structure and communication are a good deal more complex on defense.   I.E. more moving parts, they just don't line up call their front, cover 3 and then the check.
    Three years removed and being effective is rare. But with the time off, the benefit giving his body a chance to heal.  Only real way to find out would be training camp.
    For me it would be a vet signing only if you don't have any promising young players you feel offer upside that would be safe on the practice squad.
  • I feel like anyone that is thrown out there at Safety for the Ravens performs well. They just let DeShon Elliot walk but the guy has been dinged up his whole career didn’t get a ton of reps but when he gets on the field he does well.   He’s with the Lions now and watch he will be out of the League in two years.
    I seem to recall Earl Thomas having issues or he wasn’t a great teammate at one point.  Maybe I’m confusing him with another vet safety and I don’t seem to remember his play at all with the Ravens but there was that time when he took kinda of a poor angle and Chubb blew his doors off for a long TD run.
    we have a lot invested in our defense…with just a couple holes.  Why not give him a shot on a low budget prove it deal?
  • Aside from that whole "punching Chris Clark on the practice field" thing.. aka "Are you happy to see me or is that the CTE talking"
    Some dudes are just bad azzes enough without CTE, 'roads or anything else .  But then again that's what makes them great hitters ON the field.....you just don't want loose cannons off the field smacking girlfriends or teammates.
    Character counts.
    from what i remember reading..  Wims accused Gardner-Johnson of spitting at him on play prior..
    Wims got suspended 2 games.. Gardner got nothing
    returning back to the good stuff
