Tale of the Tape - Browns @ Panthers
-
I'm baaaaack! Dang I missed you guys. This offseason has been a beeotch for many reasons and I had to disconnect, but I'm back and I'm ready for some damn football.
OK, so let's talk about this game. First of all, I hate it. Let's just get this out of the way. I screamed when we drafted Baker, we cheered like crazy against in the Jets game, we felt "dangerous" and had some good times after decades of having basically none. I know why we traded for Watson, and in the long term it makes perfect sense, but right now it hurts me.
OK, now that I got THAT out and done with, I'll talk about the actual game. I hate it. Why? Well, primarily because it's a Browns season opener, and for those of you not up on our history, we tend to suck and lose in hysterical ways week 1. Add in the almost unbelievable storyline of playing against our slighted QB and I don't see a way in HECK we win this game. I just can't see it. Week 6 after McCaffery is already hurt? For sure, we'd have a shot. Week 1? That's a negative, Ghost Rider.
I don't see how we score enough points to win without Watson, I really don't. I heard from everyone in Cleveland media that watched practice and every single one of them said we've never, EVER seen anything like Deshaun Watson. He's THAT good. I see us punting the ball A LOT and I see us struggling mightily to score tds. Teams are going to stack the living CRAP out of the line and I don't think Jacoby can force them out of it. If we had Watson all year, I'd pick us to win the division. Without him, I don't see us cracking 8 wins.
Final prediction:
Baker goes nuts and we lose a close one, 27-23. We get two tds from Chubb but stall in the red zone too many times, which will happen a lot with Jacoby. We get 3 FG's but Cade misses a 50+ yarder. Baker throws 3 tds but does give us a nice interception that we'll drop. It's not all doom and gloom, as I believe our defense is good enough to carry us through a few good games, but I don't know many teams that can persevere with a backup for 11 games, it's just too much to ask. The original 6 games...yes...I'd bet on us making the playoffs, but 11? Just too much.
Fear not Browns fans, we've still got some good times coming, but season openers against our former QB on the road? Woke up feeling dangerous, indeed.

We have lost a lot of confidence on the Board.
Baker has been in Carolina for two months. OUR coach, OUR coordinators know him better than Carolina. We have posters on here that have astutely pointed out to many of you over and over the glaring deficiencies in Bakers game - yet we don’t think our coaches will dial up a plan to put Baker in these scenarios and situations he struggles the most in???? We’ve seen Baker in different offensive schemes and scenarios. Stefanski and Co could go all coach speak on us but don’t think for one second that this isn’t some kind of advantage to our staff. A staff going on three straight years together a tremendous early season advantage by the way.
Then you have the security blanket for a new QB and their Rookie LT vs. Myles Garrett. The guy next to him is new to the guard position and They have another guy that the Browns basically let go.
When there is time to go downfield. DJ Moore and Robby Anderson vs. take your pick of young talented fleet footed corner on our roster. There will be a time when this combo and Baker get the best of their opponents and put out some flashy performances - timing and circumstances for that are less likely now but more likely later.
The wise game plan from their perspective is pound the rock between the tackles help out this young offensive line and do so with your smallish backfield and take some shots when you can with a QB still learning about his new team.
^^^ that kind of sounds like what we are going do. But with a more experienced offensive line and two tough hard nosed backs that have played this type of game together for two seasons and a QB that’s had a little more time to get acclimated to his new team.
The Panthers are a middle of the road run defending team some would argue you actually attack them on the ground and run at pass rush specialists like Burns…and Carolina could certainly crowd the line of the scrimmage and turn this into a field position/field goal kicking game. I kind of feel a little bit better this year with a more established defense and a kicker with a leg. -
Welcome back jiggins. Pro betters will agree with your assessment. According to Vegas Insider the game opened with the Browns a 3 1/2 point favorite and moved a whopping 6 points to being 2 1/2 point underdogs. It takes a truckload of bettors to move a point spread even 2-3 points. I never can recall seeing a 6 point shift. So yeah, we are in trouble according to those who put a lot of money down in sports betting. So either the Browns have been so secretive about how well the starters on offense can play or the bettors understand we just won't have it to match what most think will be a better defense. In FFL the Browns defense is rated consistently in the top 6 to 12 in the league.

With Jacoby vs Baker, it isn't so much about the yardage, it's more about avoiding the costly turnovers.
When your playbook is condensed from a new starter, the turnover margin becomes that much more important.
On defense week 1? I'm willing to let our corners win their 1 on 1's outside and dare Baker to beat them while the Panthers Oline has to hold up in pass pro. This means a lot of man and match coverage while we crowd the middle of the field to further give pause. Quarters, 1 Rat, Match 3. Really give little space for those 2's and 3's to work with and cause frustration throws.
IDL has to hold up against CMC, Hubbard and Foreman. Of course, eyes need to be wide looking for the screen game. I highly doubt Carolina comes out and tries to go bombs away downfield early. Their Oline isn't equipped for that and you rarely settle in a new QB with those types of throws. Look for the horizontal passing and running game. A lot of 3 and maybe some 5 step work to setup their ball action shots.
Unless Jacoby shows another gear he hasn't previously flashed, it'll likely be a war of attrition. But because of the Browns superior trench play from the Oline and better running game, I like their chances from 3-7 points. If it's Browns -2.5, I'd be cool placing a wager.
Of course, there is that dark cloud of opening day history hanging over their heads...

This might sound a little nuts, but I believe the game could come down to penalties. We seemed to struggle with them in the past, and this offense with Brissett won't likely be able to overcome a holding call or even many false starts.

So you are saying the wrong team is the underdog? I think so too.
I think a therapy session is needed for all…Dwayne Rudd isn’t tossing his helmet, Weeden isnt getting caught under the flag, we aren’t missing a chip shot field goal to avoid a tie or the Scottish Hammer isn’t dropping a snap. The demons have all been exorcised in every possible way. -

Or use the George Costanza model. If every instinct in your being tells you to bet a certain way and every time you have done that you have been wrong, then obviously you must do the opposite. ?

The demons have all been exorcised in every possible way.Don't forget about our rookie LB dropping the easiest INT ever against Michael Vick and the Eagles and then Vick scoring the next play. Or Genard Avery missing the easiest block ever off a turnover which prevented us from running the game winning td in against Pittsburgh. Scottish Hammer dropping an effing punt snap? The comical list can continue, but we don't need to. Hehe.
There is DEFINITELY a path for us to win. Heck, there are multiple paths forward. Don't forget we have a competent kicker now. It's not a stretch to say that if we had a kicker last year, we'd have made the playoffs. Remember all those 4th downs we went for? I anticipate seeing us attempt MANY more FG's for several reasons. Our kicker is better and we need POINTS. I realize Analytics hates FG's, but we need points this year.
I certainly don't want to act like we don't have a shot because we certainly do. We have huge talent and our DEs by themselves are enough to win a game.

Hey folks, the local media, national media has dumped on the Browns for months (well, Watson & Haslam specifically). Don't believe everything you've read or heard.
While the jury is still out on Brissett, the BROWNS have a pretty darn good roster surrounding him.
I think the Browns take this game (barring a turnover fest). First road opener W since 1994, woof.

I bet the browns smoke the panthers for quarters 2-4. But the panthers start fast the first quarter.
browns get the w and start dominating once mayfield and rhule go off scripted plays. -

I'm split between where the relative strengths and weaknesses of the Browns and Panthers matchup, and how much of this is Vegas reeling in numbers playing on Browns opening day history.

Don't forget Myles Garrett will be going up against a rookie LT. A very good rookie, but still a rookie.

Sure hasn't looked that good on film in the pre-season.

His hype team was good the Carolina Preseason Analyst crew (Steve Smith and Co.) were hyping him up and raving about his progress but I saw some rough patches too and I saw him get noticeably beat a couple times. He’s got my favorite background as an offensive lineman he was a highly decorated high school wrestler. He should hold his own, but how much does he hold up week 1 going against the next NFL defensive player of the year?
I hear the NFL Network talking heads raving about this explosive Carolina offense…I don’t see it week 1. The smart game plan is rolling away from Myles, short quick pass game to CMC, maybe catching us off guard up the middle on pass downs with running plays and isolating their TE against our backer not named JOK…all of this is playing within a box and rightfully so this is a young inexperienced line with “meh” talent and they are breaking in QB that has been a Panther for two months.

What most non-local media whiffs on? is not talking enough about the Panthers overall #2 ranked defense of last season..
The Panthers lead the league in net passing yards per game (173.7 yards), they're fourth in the league in third-down percentage allowed (33.1 percent) and tied for fourth in the league in sacks (27).
But they're still somewhat susceptible to teams who want to body them up and run the ball, the way the Cowboys and Vikings did. They rank 12th in the league in rushing yards allowed per game (107.0), numbers that got out of whack in a few games. The Cowboys ran for 245, the Vikings 198, and the Patriots 151. In half of their games, they've held opponents to fewer than 82 rushing yards, and under 50 three times.
DT Derrick Brown left the last preseason game with an oblique injury << good news if* he's limited.. the only major Panthers loss on a good defense from last season? Haason Reddick is now a Eagle
The Browns defense will need good LB/DB play Sunday with McCaffrey catching Baker's underneath dink passes..I'd almost prefer Woods shading a quicker Jacob Phillips/JOK combo to shade McCaffery over the slower lateral movements of A. Walker jr... I'd even bang Emerson into McCaffery if he splits outside.. Our Safety group better come ready to swarm tackle
Sure hasn't looked that good on film in the pre-season.
Agreed..He does not look ready for the outside corner bend that 95 brings.. call the holds zebras..

Admittedly I have seen maybe 2 Panther games last season and I watched games 2 and 3 in the preseason this year.
First, Check down Darnold crippled that offense.
Secondly, Burns moves well…has a great first step and good motor in pass rush. I’ve seen him quite a few times not maintain a good rush lane and take himself out of run plays. You run right at guys like that…my Panther friend actually wants the Panthers to do the same to Garrett…Garrett is a completely different player against the run though. -

Yeah. They'd want to keep him from just bolting upfield and around the tackle.
