So, a whole lot of folks lost power. We just got ours back after three days.
Been fun. We camped out in the living room with no heat, I kept the fireplace insert going - and our little solar generator
ran the fan all evening and night - 12 hrs ! and it recharged our phones at the same time.
No flushing toilets - without going to the store and buying water because the well pump doesn't work either, lol.
No showers - went to friends' house, lol. No regular lights - battery operated, we're good doing jigsaw puzzles, etc.
Garage door - no going up and down without me lifting it by hand every time. Lost some food out of the freezer door, some from the fridge - but packed food into coolers with ice. The bathroom with no window - can't see without a flashlight.
We kept flipping light switches, garage door opener, etc out of habit. lol
The fireplace really came in handy - the insert is self-contained, the most beautiful clean hot air blows from around the outside of the box. The upper part made coffee/reheated coffee, cooked a bit.
We bought a new bigger 5k generator now. I can run a fridge, big freezer, and anything else that isn't 240.
Some neighbors had no way to keep warm, we invited them over, they already went and rented an AIRBNB, sent us pictures of them in the hottub. lol
It was actually fun, but a lot of work. Most of the street lost power, except well up the road, they did have power.
Bit of a shock for days at a time, to live a bit primitively. Convenience is so much a habit.
Occurred to us, what if...the grid shut down over part of Ohio. Stores sold out - all those folks with no generator, no electric heat, no stoves, no water, no showers, no lights, no flushing, no cooking, frozen food thawing - on a mass scale.
We still ordered a pizza and I went an picked it up. New generator even has a remote to turn it on and off. Has an inverter for electric charging. Will even charge up a 12 car battery.
And we have unlimited firewood. I have split enough for two winters. lol
I have to find out if our well is 240. If not, we'll have to fix that with another one that 120.
We had fun, actually, despite the inconvenience. I went out to the garage, pressed the button at night, and stood there in total blackness, feeling my way to the garage door, to manually push it up. Then realized I had it manually locked and had to walk all the way around the front of the car and back to the garage door to unlock it, not seeing anything.
But back in the day - previous generations lived that way 24.7, 12 months out of a year. They didn't have pizza on call, No carry-out of their favorite restaurants.
Still, they cared about their neighbors - helped each other out. They figured out ways of getting by, staying warm, staying fed, hopefully staying healthy. They found love and cared and were happy so much despite the work.
Just makes you appreciate the conveniences.
Anymore, though, we have those who believe being sustained is deserved, they are entitled to be supported.
Maybe they (the left) know they are too wimpy to survive in hard times, so they ridicule every one who has their heads screwed on straight. They support socialism - a free ride at everyone's expense who have principles, who love and know that there are only two genders.........
Power's back on. YAY !
Just imagine war breaks out, our gird is hit.
Yeah. What if our grid went down - a third of our country? We had neighbors txting each other so much - it was great.
