That second article, and the "solution" provided, is fucking laughable and sad.

You're in a boat and the boat is sinking. Instead of patching the hole in the boat the solution this Rep is providing is to teach you how to use buckets to remove the water.

If our military servicemen are commiting sexual assault at an alarming rate then maybe we should focus on having that NOT happen, instead of telling women in the military to get better at defending themselves.

I'm not expecting anyone in this backwards group to agree, but it's so blindingly obvious how bad the proposed solution is

on the face of it, it can be construed as silly, sure. Except, if you knew a bit about this self-defense, you would understand that fighting someone bigger and stronger - can be done with understanding and training. I would say just teach women these classes. It's asinine to focus on being victims - and not focus on prevention.

The only way to prevent it in most instances - is to train the gal to STOP it. Training would be rapists to not be what they are is what is silly.

There is no prevention of sexual assaults by authorities - they are never there, Woody. Even I could teach a gal ways to quickly end violently end an assault with counter violence, and I'm NOT qualified to be any kind of instructor at all.

we aren't talking a few years of Kung Fu or karate training etc. We are talking more like Krav Maga training. That is why Krav Maga was developed.

Cal, this isn't sexual assault by some sicko on the street. It's by members of our military and happening within our military.

Prevention isn't putting it on the female to defend herself.

Prevention is addressing the underlying issue, a culture of sexual assault in the military and who is going into military service.

This isn't "focusing on being victims". This is addressing the actual root cause. Apparently you'd be ok with our military being full of rapists as long as the females had pepper spray and knew some self defense moves.

Why do you not want to address and focus on those actually committing the sexual assault?

so, I was being honest and respectful of your subject, and you do the same woodpecker thing AGAIN - you twist it and put words where there is no justification at all.

The second article you peck and whine about, is saying it's STUPID to emphasize wokeness in the military, and ignore the sexual assault problem in the military.

again, I WAS IN THE MILITARY. you were not. You wouldn't have made it through the first week of basic training.

again - you just want to screw around - apparently you have no desire to actually discuss subjects seriously.

IN THE MILITARY - There are many single guys and gals. A few of those males can be rapists.

    Underlying cause?

Read the article for a chnage, Woody.

Your ignorant retort about "this isn't some sicko on the street...." is meaningless and makes you look stupid. The military has a sexual assault problem because there are men here and there who are sick and want to dominate and assault women.

btw, there is NO "culture of sexual assault" in the military. I was in the military, never heard of any kind of sexual assault the years I was in. Sexual assault happens because there are males who are seriously screwed up to be sexually violent with females in any society. In the military, in colleges, in businesses, etc etc etc etc.

As to "who is getting into the military".... again, you have no idea of what you are pretending to talk about. How do you propose to stop males from enlisting etc, who never have been a rapist but end up being a rapist ? Ask them ahead of time?

Go watch "Minority Report" and come back and apologize for your stupid retort.

  • Well someone is riled

Your first post is no surprise. I don't need to insult you or put words in your mouth or anything like that. You just resort to your normal victim defense when someone expresses and opinion against yours. Especially when you get flustered and don't really have a response.

Also, there absolutely is a higher rate of sexual assaults in the military than the public

The ridiculous of what you posted in the OP, and your own responses, is that you're putting this on the victims to defend themselves, instead of addressing the problem and culture around sexual assault in the military

In reference to the highlighted text: A woman's responsibility when receiving an unwanted sexual advance is to tell the guy to fuck off same as a man would do to another man. Kind of like getting pissed off if your server asks if you want dessert at the end of your meal and you don't.

God Steve, I get that women's activism isn't necessarily high on your list, being the "well don't dress that way" guy.... But that's an ignorant comment even for you

As if they AREN'T doing that already

Only this group of right wing darlings could continuously blame the sexual assault victim.

And again you're being ridiculous and you know it. And no unwanted advances are not high on my list of things to be outraged about. It's an adult's responsibility to say no. Assault is a completely different thing.

Assuming that you are a straight adult male how offended or outraged would you be if they gay man proposition to you at a bar? Or told you you looked hot in your soccer uniform?

Has a woman ever come on to you that you had no interest in? How did you react? You called the police? Take a swing at her?

probably not, he's maybe? gay, although he did admit he was not trans. Or do I have that backwards?

nobody is "riled" woodpecker. Are there more sexual assaults in the military than in civilian life? don't know, but it wouldn't surprise me.

That does NOT MEAN there is a "culture" of sexual assaults. Please try to grow up a bit.

In basic training, there are no dates, no ladies, except for marching past a WAF squadron. Which reminds me of a story - our one TI used to have us do a cadence "song". So, he picked me one day, and we were passing by a WAF squadron, and I don't remember what I "sang", but the girls got yelled at for laughing, our TI made me drop and do fifty because my fellow guys were laughing. Like I said before - I was born a goofy comedian child. It was really nice what I said, not offensive, of course. But after I did fifty pushups, he was grinning at me later as we marched.

Oh, anyways, woodpecker - your deliberately false assumption, as nearly always, is childishly self-serving. Solve the underlying problem? sure. Why not just teach all criminals that crime in against the law, and then they wouldn't commit crime in the first place, eh???

So, yeah, teach all men in the service that rape is wrong, illegal, and sick. Of course, rapists will repent and suddenly not be rapists anymore, you think that is how it works.

Of course there are more sexual assaults in the miltary. No ladies in basic, no dates in basic training. A lot of ladies in the squadron across the street. A lot of dating going on - and guys from all demographics. A lot of walking and talking. Sure, there are males who are sick in the head and assault women. They go to prison - UCMJ. Does that stop any other sick minded male from ever raping? nope.  A lot of chances for a gal to go walking, say, to the beach - it was a block? away from our base in Biloxi. I'd done it with gals who wanted to walk with a male friend to be safe.

So, woodpecker - it's stupid to ridicule the immediate answer - training women to defend themselves-  like I said, example: Krav Maga.

Long term? who knows. Go ahead with your infantile utopian nonsense. Rapists KNOW it's sick and wrong - and criminal. Yet, they still commit the crime. I wish I knew a magic way of simply getting all violent criminals to never commit crimes. But ridiculing people who don't have the answer - that is the reason for your initial post.

Trust me - a lot of gals and guys in the military are on their own, away from home. Sometimes, they make bad decisions. Sometimes, they are in a secluded environment where some might commit a violent sick crime like rape, on their own time, in a place far from home, sometimes off base. I mentioned it to the Chaplain one time, and he was aghast - he said to never walk her on the beach again, because about 3? years before, an airman walked his girl on the beach one night, and some locals that hated the airmen saw them, and beat him to within an inch of his life, and repeatedly raped the gal.

     Oh how you skew.

The second article never stated or implied that mandatory self-defense classes was "the solution".  The Reps bill was only meant as stated in the article to help "combat sexual assault" ....literally I may add.

Do civilian women who take self-defense classes believe that it will be the solution to the crime of rape?

The Army's punishment for rape and sexual assault is extremely stiff. . The good Rep from Florida was probably well aware of that. So what other things can we do she must have thought.

Maximum Possible Punishments for Violations of Article 120: Rape and Sexual Assault Generally

The maximum punishment according to Article 120 varies according to the alleged offense. For example:

Rape – Forfeiture of all pay and allowances and confinement for life without eligibility for parole. In addition, rape includes a mandatory minimum sentence of a dismissal or dishonorable discharge.

Sexual Assault – Forfeiture of all pay and allowances and confinement for 30 years. In addition, sexual assault includes a mandatory minimum sentence Dismissal or dishonorable discharge

Aggravated sexual contact -Forfeiture of all pay and allowances, confinement for 20 years, and a Dishonorable Discharge.

Abusive sexual contact – Forfeiture of all pay and allowances, confinement for 7 years, and a Dishonorable Discharge.
