  • So now we are all for doctors and science again?

    Good to know.

    Mr Nickers

You have my prayers, man - but have a great positive attitude. The medical technology they have is fascinating. Take care of yourself. Eat healthy, my thing is. Sometimes I wonder if our diets don't help us avoid it, at least sometimes. I'm fond of drinking green tea with turmeric and raw honey. well, and some root beer every so often. lol Guys like us, we're too ornery to not battle and win. (my knee replacement is robot assisted, egad....how med tech has advanced.)

Terrible news... Many great sports casters in this town got a raw deal.. Casey Coleman, Gib Shanley and of course my all time favorite Nev Chandler to name a few.. Donovan is a class act.. I wish him a speedy recovery and it can be done.. A longtime neighbor of mine just beat stage 4 cancer... I remember when Nev was doing broadcasts and was on a morphine pump,,  He was always my fave to listen to broadcast Browns games on the radio.. him and Joe Tait were the best in the business.. Prayers go to Donovan and his family for a full recovery.. Battling cancer in the very early stages myself... So far I have been lucky... Watched my mother battle breast cancer.. So I know it first hand... Fuck Cancer!

Terrible news indeed!    Nicks, very sorry to read that you have cancer too!   I'll be praying for you.  Hopefully, this board will be a nice distraction for you whenever you need it.

Tom , I'm not a person who worries until its time to worry.. My situation thankfully is very manageable...  I thank you for your words of support none the less.. Been a fighter my entire life... And have no plans to stop no matter what comes my way...

  • Had few family members die from that. Leukemia is no joke. I wish him all the best.

  • That sucks. As I've said before I was a huge Nev Chandler fan but I took to Jimmy pretty quickly.

When our Armstrong Cable did not cover a very few games a while back ..... i went with the radio NFL game route,  Jimmy brought his normal and very good good job behind the mic.   Not bad at all !    I do prefer football games on TV if available.

...... edit add.....   Now I like the occasional long car rides and listening to Hammy doing an Indians  / Guardians radio game  -or-   the nice backyard radio games.   Reminds me of my grandfather gathered around the picnic table he with his Carling Black Label or Koehler beer, me with an RC Cola listening to Jimmy Dudley (or whomever).  Me occasionally shooting a few hoops.   Nice !

Beautiful summer days and baseball,  oh yeah.

  • Loved our football/baseball radio announcers Tom/Jim Jimmy/Doug, the best there is. It really sucked to hear Doug retiring

  • CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Jim Donovan, longtime radio voice of the Cleveland Browns and a 3News sports anchor, made a call on the air Wednesday night that he wishes he didn’t have to make.

He announced on 3News Front Row that he’s battling leukemia again.

“There’s a story to the new look and hairstyle that I am sporting here tonight,” Donovan said. “And I think tonight we’re going to take a couple of moments here to tell you the story behind the story behind the look. So we’ll start this way. It was about a year and a half ago that I noticed that something was amiss with my health. And if you’ve known me and if you’ve followed me through the years here at Channel 3 and with the Cleveland Browns, you know that I’ve had a long battle with leukemia to the point where I had a bone marrow transplant about 11 and a half years ago. Well, my concerns were confirmed, and by that I mean it was told to me that I had had a relapse of leukemia.”

Donovan, 66, explained that he’s been receiving intravenous and oral chemotherapy for the last 18 months.

“For the most part, those worked pretty well,” he said. “But things change and things have changed for me in my case. And so we’re going to have to go with a different treatment plan, a more aggressive treatment plan, which has already started. That’s the badge of honor that you get in chemotherapy. You begin to lose your hair. So I’m underway with that. This is going to be kind of a long and winding road through this treatment plan because it is going to be pretty aggressive, but the goal is got to get better, got to get healthy, got to move on. I know the deal. I’ve done it before and I plan to do it once again.”

Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam wished Donovan well on behalf of the organization.

“Our thoughts and the thoughts of the entire organization are with Jim and his family right now in this difficult time,” the Haslams said in a statement. “There is no better representative of the Cleveland Browns. He is as tough as they come and proved as much in his previous battle. We’re all behind Jim and will do everything we can to support him. We look forward to him winning this fight, being around the team and continuing to call our games during the season.”

Micki Byrnes, WKYC president and general manager, captured the essence of Donovan in a statement.

“Jim Donovan is a Cleveland broadcasting legend, whose name has become synonymous with the Northeast Ohio sports scene,” Byrnes said. “Just as Jim handles his daily reporting and analysis with smarts, grit and strength — we know that Jim will bring that same tenacity and spirit to this health battle. We appreciate that the viewers and community stand in solidarity with our WKYC team in supporting Jim and his family, just as they always have for the past 38+ years.”

Jim Donovan would kick you squarely in your buttocks, if you let this news damper your Victory Monday ?

Sadly, after listening yesterday, I even hate to re-post the updated news. But, Jim won't be traveling to Pittsburgh in Week 2.

Browns Nation...? Please keep Jim Donovan & his family in your prayers for the next several weeks ?

and.. Good Luck to our fighting friend Jim Donovan !

( kick that as$ Jimmy & get back into the playoff booth ! )

  • This sucks

  • I just heard about this yesterday and was bummed to hear the news. I love hearing him call games. He always sounds so youthful and energetic, it’s hard to think of him as an older guy.

Kick its ass Jim, and a speedy recovery.

  • I would have listened to the radio yesterday if I'd have known.

  • Good luck Jimmy. Met him years ago at the Old Arcade. Great guy.

  • Give'em hell , Jimmy!

  • When anything in Browns news needed some good news this week !

That makes 2 of us!  The only difference is this knucklehead didn't look at the date of the 1st post in the threat so I gave @dutch-oven a thank you.

    ...can't hurt.

  • About ten years ago I was working in downtown Akron and my coworker says "Jimmy Donovan!", I turn around from the back of our work truck and there's Jim Donovan, with his wife and daughter. Kind of weird when you run into someone you've seen for years upon years on TV, but in person.

We've been blessed with some great announcers in this town. Tait for the Cavs, Chandler, Coleman and Donovan for the Browns, Hamilton for the Indians/Guardians.
