~    In the other Monday night game  .....   PHI 25-10  win.

Week 2, the Philadelphia Eagles' offensive line took over and brought home a win. On Monday night, the Eagles' defensive line was the star of the show.

Eagles GM Howie Roseman has a type. He likes his players big, strong and mean, and the Eagles got plenty of them on both lines.

The Eagles defense was fantastic in Monday night's 25-11 win, which pushed Philly's record to 3-0. They took away practically everything the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense wanted to do. The run game was slammed shut all night, ensuring the Buccaneers were in second-and-long and third-and-long most of the game. Tampa Bay gained just 174 yards. They were at less than 100 yards of offense before a 75-yard drive in the fourth quarter after the game was already decided. Tampa Bay had just 2.4 yards per rush and didn't do much more through the air.

Philadelphia has a lot of stars and playmakers, but success for the Eagles starts up front. On both sides of the ball.

Eagles build roster from inside out

The Eagles' philosophy was exemplified by the Jalen Carter pick back in April.

The Eagles were coming off a season in which they had four different players record 10 or more sacks, an NFL record. Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave left in free agency, but it's not like the Eagles were lacking on the defensive line without him. And yet, Roseman traded up when Carter, a supremely talented defensive tackle from Georgia, fell to the ninth pick of the draft. Carter is the early favorite to win NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. On Monday night, he had two forced fumbles and was a big part of the Eagles shutting down the Buccaneers offense. The Eagled didn't take their defensive line for granted in the offseason, and the addition of Carter is paying off.

~     From  FANDUEL   a very complete summary of the    ▪︎ Cincinnati  19   LA Rams  16  game. ▪︎

Monday night’s 19-16 win over the Rams, the first by the Cincinnati Bengals this season, went a long way.

The Pro Bowl quarterback shook off the lingering effects of the right calf strain that kept his status in doubt right up until game time. He wasn't quite as mobile as usual and didn't record a touchdown pass - but he managed to help the Bengals (1-2) get up off the canvas.

“I pride myself on my availability,” Burrow said. “There is risk to go out there and potentially reinjure it. But there’s also risk to go out there and be 0-3.”

Burrow finished 26 for 49 for a season-high 259 yards and also threw his second interception this season. His favorite target, Ja’Marr Chase, broke out with 12 catches for 141 yards, although nine different Bengals were recipients of Burrow's passes during the evening.

Chase's longest catch was a 43-yarder that came during a third-quarter drive that led to the third of four field goals by Evan McPherson.

Burrow told Chase during pregame warmup that he was going to play.

“I didn’t want him to play," Chase said. "It just shows that Joe is hard-headed. But he’s a football player. It takes a lot to be a quarterback and also be injured.

“We needed to get this win,” Chase said. "I was just being there for Joe. All I could do is try to make Joe look good.”

Joe Mixon's 14-yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave the reigning AFC North champs their first lead of the season. Meanwhile, linebacker Logan Wilson picked off Los Angeles quarterback Matthew Stafford twice and the Bengals sacked him six times.

Stafford threw a 1-yard scoring pass to Tutu Atwell with just over a minute left in the game, and the PAT got the Rams within three points, but Mitchell Wilcox fell on the ensuing onside kick to seal the win for the Bengals.

It wasn’t clear until just before the game whether Burrow would play. The injury occurred early in training camp, and he aggravated it late in the Bengals’ loss to Baltimore last week. Burrow returned to practice on Thursday on a limited basis, and on Saturday the team listed him as questionable.

“In the workout today, (I) felt good enough to play,” Burrow said. “Don’t have any setbacks, was basically the criteria. It’s still day to day. It’s good to get through this one. It’s going to be better this week than it was last week.”

The Cincinnati defense was outstanding. Stafford was sacked twice by defensive end Trey Hendrickson, and Wilson intercepted him once in each half, the second two-interception game of the fourth-year linebacker's career.

“Our defense kept us right in this thing," Bengals coach Zac Taylor said.

Stafford finished 18 for 39 for 269 yards as the Rams slipped to 1-2. Puka Nacua - whose 25 receptions for 266 yards in his first two games was a rookie record - led the Rams with five catches for 72 yards.

Mixon was a workhorse again, carrying 19 times for 65 yards. On Cincinnati's first possession of the second half, he went over left tackle and found a seam to score from 14 yards out, his first TD of the season, to cap a 10-play, 75-yard drive.

“It did feel like we were in striking distance,” Rams coach Sean McVay said. "I thought the defense kept us in the game the whole night, and I thought it was really unfortunate, especially early on where we had to settle for field goals where we had some of the looks and some of the opportunities to be able to execute, and we just weren’t able to get it done.”

    RING OF HONOR

Former quarterback Boomer Esiason and receiver Chad Johnson were inducted into the Bengals Ring of Honor at halftime.

Esiason played for the Bengals in 1984-92 and then again for a final season in 1997. He was elected to the Pro Bowl three times and was the NFL MVP in 1988.

Johnson, who was officially known as Chad Ochocinco from 2008-11, played in Cincinnati for 10 seasons and was elected to six Pro Bowls. He’s still the team’s all-time leader in receptions (751), receiving yards (10,783) and receiving TDs (66).

    INJURIES

Rams: OL Alaric Jackson left late in the first half with a thigh injury and didn't return. ... OL Joe Noteboom (knee) went out in the third quarter and didn't return.

I watched both. Rams had a couple costly Stafford interceptions, and when dem Bungles dialed up the pressure, the Rams patchwork offensive line was swiss cheese.

Don't know if this is the place for it- but I have an observation about our old pal Baker for his Fan Club.  ?

LOL FIFY the thread title mjp... now I can spew.

Ah- regarding Baker.... His Fan Club isn't going to like it...Watching that game jogged my failing memory back to several years ago when the Mayfield debates were raging. To paraphrase the famous Denny Green quote...  "He is who we thought he was."

Pretty nothing much has changed over the years, Baker is Dandy Andy Dalton good. Why the Browns dumped him. If everything around him is absolutely perfect, he's good enough to win you a playoff game, but not in the league of the elite QBs like Mahomes, Josh Allen, or a healthy Tua.

For sure, in the weak NFC South the Buccaneers are plenty good enough to win the division. Overall the Buc's O-line gives him adequate protection, and he has his security blanket in Mike Evans- who will be able to catch any of Baker's off target passes as long as they're in the same area code. Just give him another WR the caliber of Chase Young, and a RB the level of a healthy Nick Chubb and it's Super Bowl time baby!!!!  Sounds sort of familiar, no? Amassing that level of talent on one team doesn't happen in today's NFL. ?

Don't know if tia watched the game, but sure looked like Baker is a one read QB. And he did have one screw up- could have run for 20 yards on a busted play, but instead tossed a deep bomb incompletion into double coverage.

EDIT- PS- we will get to see and scout Baker and the Bucs again Thursday night 10\26 when they play the Bills on the road. Get the popcorn ready.  😁

What we learned is Tampa Bay's first two games were against bottom four overall NFL teams in the Bears and Vikings (both 0-3). The Bears have the 2nd worst defense in the NFL (would be #1 if the Broncos didn't cough up 70pts this week) and the Vikings are the 7th worst defense.

Baker is a one dimensional, one read, unathletic, undersized quarterback, who is extremely immature and uncoachable. He can do fine against the worst defenses in the league, but play him against an average, above average, or elite defense and he reverts to the same old Baker. He went for 146-1 TD-1 INT with a passer rating of 73.1 last night. The Eagles took his lunch money and there was nothing he could do about it. Baker plays in the worst division in football in the NFC South, so I'm sure he'll have some other good games this year, but he is who he is.

Well if you don't mind burned popcorn you still have time to join the Fan Club. Bills will totally dismantle the Bucs like Oregon did to the Prime Colorado hypesters. Similar score coming their way.

Scouting and professional interest syd. We do play the Rams later in the year, and living in Bungle land, have to keep up on what Cinci is up to.  FWIW, the Bengals were far from great in that game.

And from a time standpoint, I started watching both games way after the opening kickoff. When DirecTv had game shortcuts- you could catch an entire game in around 20 minutes. I'm not quite that efficient, but fast forwarding & cutting out the commercials, halftime, and most of the dead time in between plays, I'll bet I was in the 40 minute time frame or less- on both of the games.  🙂
