Some organizations/ownerships will never understand HOW to invest in a QB and protect such an important investment. Forget the Watson situation. I realize I went from a huge Baker fan prior to us drafting him to talking myself out of my initial angry reaction to the ownership dropping Baker. I posted a lot of venom about them not appreciating him and bringing up that's what he got for playing hurt. HOWEVER, I started to think the Watson I saw playing for the Texans seemed like an upgrade. That means I deserve some of the reality hitting me right between the lookers today.
I still don't know if Baker is ever going to be a Super Bowl Champion - but give the guy credit for his willingness to compete like one. We scored 48 points in a playoff game in Pittsburgh with him as our QB - although Myles Garrett started the score-fest with a TD on the game's first snap. Our pass rush caused 4 INTs and 5 turnovers from Roethlisberger. Baker threw 3 TD passes and ZERO interceptions on the same night. The interesting thing about it? It was the ONLY game our OC Alex Van Pelt got to call the plays the entire time he was here.
Of course, Jimmy's organization was still firing the OC (Alex Van Pelt) and RB Coach (Stump Mitchell) as the next ideas to solidify his staff around getting the right offensive fit for the gotta-have Watson. The difference between Watson's previous teams at Clemson as well as Houston - was they had the right staff and right offense all in place and ready to go to match his skills and strengths on Watson's 1st day there while the coaches knew exactly what needed to improve. Unfortunately, the Browns were heading into season #3 hoping they had the right new offense ready to go around the QB. Here's the thing, they did a lot of the same crap around Baker. How many different Offensive Coordinators or Coaches calling plays did the guy have here the 1st 3-4 years here? What seemed like a great idea at first was a lousy idea with bringing OBJ to the locker room here. I got the feeling that guy turned a lot of guys on the team against Baker; because nobody said they were sorry to see him go after all they accomplished together at times. Meanwhile, OBJ was buying teammates flashy cleats other stuff. Seemed like he wanted friction between Baker and Jarvis Landry (after those 2 had very good chemistry established here). I think OBJ was a cancer here and Jimmy used it all as his ideal opportunity to go get HIS new QB.
Another similarity Baker experienced like Watson here - was in their 2nd seasons with this team. The Browns lost both starting Offensive Tackles in the Opener against the Titans in Baker's 2nd season. They also lost 1 of the backups the next week. Fast forward to last year, the Browns lost Conklin, Jones and Wills. Lucky for us, the unemployed Left Tackle the Browns signed off the streets gave 100 times the effort that the Wills did. Conklin and Jones are both great run blockers when healthy. That said, how often was Conklin ever healthy enough before or after we drafted Dawand Jones. We're seeing this whole thing play out as Jimmy's business idea of how to compete. Pretty soon his product is gonna be competing with Sanford & Son re-runs...

Great history lesson ( unfortunately). Damn this bites.
The Browns laid a similar egg in a 38-6 opening day loss to the Ratbirds a few years ago & finished 11-5.
Yet nothing we saw Sunday gives us hope that can happen this year. Once again, lots of distractions. Hope I'm wrong.
PS....season ticket holders get a survey on Monday morning after every game. I vented like the Tazmanian Devil, most notably regarding " on a scale of 1-10, how was your game day experience?" WELL IT WAS BLEEPIN BLEEP BLEEP BLEEP.
I'm still pissed they charge major league prices for minor league games (preseason), then treat the HOME OPENER like a preseason game. Somebody talk me off the edge.
Haslam, WTF. I really wish Gilbert owned the Browns. Our owners in town are in the wrong spots, sadly.

So Eisen says that the trade is looking like the worst trade in history. And it may end up being...but it was only game one of this pivotal Deshaun Watson season. The Browns were missing their two starting tackles and were playing a very good Dallas defense. Six sacks on Watson. Five times he ran for 39 yards. Ford only had 44 yards in 12 carries. And with no game reps all preseason. - Tough to succeed.
As much as I'm no fan of his, he deserves a solid chance at proving his abilities this season. And until the league or the doctors say he can't play, he should play.

i just wonder if he is still dealing with an injured throwing shoulder - whether mentally / physically.
Apart from being cleared by the doctors... frustrating because of 2021 with Mayfields non throwing shoulder had an effect on his play throughout the season.
if im wrong - so be it.

Well, his deep balls didn't seem to have much zip to them.

Out of nowhere during the Cowboys game he had a stretch where all the sudden the ball was flying out of his hand. He was really spinning it.
I don't discount the idea that his shoulder could still be lame, but sometimes I really think his throwing problems are mostly mental. He just looks like he has no idea or no faith in what is going on, and he's almost always overthinking shit out there, instead of just playing football free and loose.

We had 4 QB's all TC and preseason. And there was a stretch where he had soreness in his shoulder. I don't think that he had enough live, quality reps with the entire starting offense. I don't think that the starting offense (minus Watson) had enough live reps. We know the starting tackles didn't. And the Dallas defense is pretty good. They weren't going to let our offense get acquainted with one another. The offense just wasn't ready to play football at a high level....and I'm none too sure that they will be this week either.

Listening to the local sports radio station during Training Camp, there were stories here and there that just didn't make it sound like things were progressing all that well with the offense. No flat out "Holy shit, they look horrible" stories, but if you listened on a regular basis and pieced the interviews together, you didn't come away optimistic. In fact, you got the impression that there wasn't much of a sense of urgency. You have a QB who for the first two seasons with the Browns was light years from the elite status he was between 2018-2020, now moving into a new offense with a new OC, a new #2 WR in Jerry Jeudy, and there wasn't a sense of urgency?

It feels like the equivalent of getting excited to watch a Fleetwood Mac concert back in the day only to find out Stevie Nicks and Christie McVie both had laryngitis the day of the concert. Not that Lindsey Buckingham wouldn't be fun to listen to as well; but you need your very important people to make it happen...
If he's hurt - he can't help us though. What made Stefanski the NFL Coach of the Year was his ability win games without the starting QB with a bunch of different backups.

Tom, I was just the opposite. I became a detractor during the injured shoulder season.
Will Baker ever be a SB QB? Who knows, but I think the more important question is, could he be a SB QB on the right team? If he was in KC? pretty good chance.
We have lived to see a lot of great QBs never make it to/win the show, but they were still great QBs. Moon and Kosar come to mind.
Some people get really mad at Baker conversations, but many of us still talk about the Phipps/Warfield debacle and the Mitchell/Davis mess.
In my opinion, the jury is in, and for me there is no debate on either issue.
The Watson deal is among the worst football moves ever made. Whatever Watson is, he is distasteful to most Browns fans. His performance, excuses acknowledged, has been shit.
When most of the team headlines have to do with happy endings, something is seriously fucked up.
Was it a mistake to get rid of Mayfield? Yes, of course it was. For whatever his issues and foibles are, he has out performed what the Browns FO have replaced him with.

A permanent lifetime ban and do the Brownies a solid to let us void that contract.
Godell hates Browns fans for ass fucking him and making him give our team back. The cocksucker will do everything he can to keep Watson in Cleveland.

I do think the Browns are one of the teams that Goodell views are benefitting from "The Shield," the NFL, more than the NFL benefits from the Browns.
I looked it up and the Browns are in the top half of the league in gross annual revenue, somewhere around $545 M a year. Honest take: that surprises me.
The NFL braintrust wants a global game because they stand the benefit the most. They see the success of the of these major European soccer leagues, I'm sure they see what the Saudis and Emiratis are doing with destination/tourism sporting events (UFC, et al) and they want a chunk of that capital.
I'd say the same for other mid-market teams.
The NFL wants more money from London, Frankfort, Munich, Madrid, Barcelona, Mexico City and Rio de Janiero. They understand they've reached their ceiling in mid-level American markets.
So I'd agree on his disdain for those teams in their current locales; though, he still needs fans spending money.

One cocksucker is the same as another. Fuck everyone who isn't us.
I am not heartless however. If our opponents all die, I will beat their wives and fuck their daughters.
Now That would be a happy ending.
