Well I really wasn't expecting much here and looks like my expectations paid off. The basic setup of THE KILLERS GAME has been done often in many different situations for a good many years. Whether it's bank robbers, jewel thieves, corrupt lawmen or in this case hitman the protagonist wants to get out of the business but like Michael Corleone said they keep pulling me back in. That's the substance of this one but it borrows liberally from many other popular films which I'll get to later. You can employ your spoiler alert now if you care to, so it's not really all that surprising. Joe (David Bautista) is the world's number one assassin and works for a huge criminal corporation that does that sort of thing. By the way all of victims are bad guys so you don't hate him as much as you probably should. That's because the main character is needs to be at least somewhat sympathetic which Mr Bautista is not. Oh he's big and strong and covered with tattoos and pretty ugly but that's about as far as it goes. Strike one. He has been plagued by blurred vision lack of motor control confusion Etc and finally agrees to go to see a specialist. The specialist informs him that he has a very rare neurological disease which rapidly progresses and will turn him into a drooling incontinent blind idiot within a few short months; no cure no hope. To add insult to injury he’s recently met an elegant and beautiful ballerina Maize (Sophia Boutella) and they have made a love connection. Joe realizes he couldn't bear to be a burden on her for the last couple months of his life so he decides to leave her after filling out a monstrously large insurance policy. Bad news? The insurance policy won't pay off if it's suicide so Joe goes to the corporation he worked for and hires someone to assassinate him. The contract is taken over by his good friend's daughter who is an evil bitch that hates Joe anyway. Yes, more bad news. She hires every assassin she knows and an army of them are now competing for the multi-million dollar reward. Now the good news, well kinda. It turns out that the world's top medical experts are incompetent and somebody has mislabeled the blood sample. [insert Obamacare joke here] Even worse he's already dumps Maize! The aforementioned bitch refuses to call off the hit and now there are scores of killers after Joe. They swiped this hook from THE WARRIORS and every group of killers has their own personality and they are all after the reward money.
Not only THE WARRIORS but also JOHN WICK have had their pockets picked for plot devices but THE KILLERS GAME doesn't do any of them as well as the films from which they were stolen.
