I get that it’s Cincinnati but wanting to live here isn’t akin to smoking crack, despite what you may think.
This is all uncharted territory for me nickers, and it’s very intimidating. If you take a step back from the news cycles and connect the dots, you will see that the way immigrants are being portrayed is just making an already hard thing even harder. For us, for them, for everyone.
The misinformation is rampant. It’s weird and counterproductive and kinda scary.
The America l know and love is fearless and compassionate. I don’t have any say on who decides to migrate where, or why. But once they’re in my back yard, l have a fighting chance to do something about it. I’m a believer in boots on the ground and facing fears. This is the kind of stuff l have to do to fill the hole inside.

I don’t really do blanket statements when it comes to people. I’m sure there’s some illegals worth keeping around. Hard working decent people come from all walks of life.
And l’m sure some are terrible and are rapists and murderers and all the stuff we don’t want.
Again, l have no say on who decides to migrate where or why. None of us lowly people do. We are dealt this hand and it’s our job, should we choose to accept it, to separate wheat from chaff among who’s already here. It’s kinda a neat challenge.

Bah, l’m expendable. No biggie.
What l’m finding out is that most of the folks this organization helps are people on temporary work visas. There’s a fuck ton of that going on right now. That’s the situation with the majority of Haitians in the news.
For all intents and purposes, it’s a trial run. We’re basically saying, “yeah, you can hang here for a bit, but here’s the shit you gotta do if you wanna stay longer…” And it’s basically all the shit you and l had to learn from ages 1 to 18. English, job skills, knowing wrong from right, traffic laws, fire codes, etc.
It’s a tall order to tackle all of that in a year or 2 on top of just surviving. The ones who manage to do it? Well they’re the keepers. They are absolutely the people we want filling shoes.
