Disappointment with Communication in the Secondary AGAIN!

On a day our defense up front was pressuring the passer pretty damn good - this secondary that had pretty much all of its starting personnel out there bailing out the Chargers with horrific breakdowns that became 2 very easy TD receptions.  The difference in this game was better coverage in the backend.  1 QB turned the ball over - the other didn't.  The Chargers were only running a zone coverage all game so color me confused why it would take Winston forever to get the ball out of his hands.  Not that Herbert did this a lot more frequently; but on 2 occasions they got the look they hoped/waited for; and coincidentally - these both caused communication breakdowns in our secondary for uncontested TD passes.

On the other side of the ball, our passing game looked very easy to defend.  It's still taking too long for the QB to throw the ball; and being late in this league invites INTs.  Last week, the Ravens dropped a couple INTs so this wasn't new and exclusive to this week.  Let's hope they're better prepared for the type of defense they will play this week and HOW they're going to be on time.  On the defensive side of the ball, Schwartz and the Defensive Consultant Vrabel that should be able to help the DB/Secondary Coach get the communication issues resolved.

Any thoughts, concerns or stuff you think I got wrong?   Let me know - run it man...

How else are we going to get the #1 pick overall? I say take away all communications and give several on the sidelines a fire and a blanket to signal in whatever can be divined from smoke. Knowing us we will then always call the smoke draw. Surefire way of getting the #1 pick. Yes, pun was intended.?😛

That sad thing is there's still 8 games left; and the vets like Myles, Bitonio, Chubb, Pocic, Conklin, Teller, Ward, Njoku and others probably don't want to tank (knowing how tough it's been for this franchise to get QB right in the 1st place).  If that's the direction we're going though - let's hope this is a good year to draft a QB.  NE already drafted their 1st round QB this year if we end up tied with them. Stay tuned...

  • It's so dumb, communication issues. These guys are pros, or supposed to be.

Well, I seem to recall the ugly 47-42 loss to the Chargers at SoFi, where communication issues happened at least twice a few seasons ago. WRs uncovered like yesterday.

It sounds like a blanket statement, but I'm writing it anyway.....our players aren't smart. Which could lead to another question....is our scouting department smart? Or are these coaching schemes to complex for the players?

    What a disappointment.

Might as well play DTR for a few games in a row at some point. They drafted him.

Nothing against Winston, everybody knows he's hot & cold. If it's me, I start DTR vs Pitt, Den, & Pitt again.

  • Cover 2 on 3rd and 20.. The game should’ve started 0-3 instead of letting up an easy score. Sloppy playcalling on defense.

I wonder if JOK’s absence has anything to do with it.

Agreed!  Surprisingly, they did well putting heat on the QB with the front 7 so in that respect the Browns held up okay.  Having said that, I didn't pay attention to how the LBers were doing in coverage. At the back end, these guys should be very familiar with one another by now to the point they should have the communication process down.  Those 2 TD passes had no DBs anywhere in sight - which is inexcusable when the guys up front were hustling to limit the time to throw.

A couple pieces I'm working on simultaneously are the communication breakdowns in the secondary, along with the hit and miss play from 2 high shells.  What didn't help is Ward coming off concussion protocol. His mind isn't right when he gets back, like anyone else's isn't.

The coaches have realized Delpit is a liability back on a hash, he along with Hickman. So our two high rotation is now McLoud, Thornhill and Mitchell (when he isn't playing slot)

By the way, Mitch is having himself a quietly solid season.  He's turning into a good late round find.

As for Winston and our passing game. OL played above their depth one week and fell off the next towards the median. Same with Winston.  He's easier to defend with the amount of zone coverages you throw at him and ask him to process it consistently. His turnover rate, especially pushing the ball down field sans play action, increases a ton.  So you're basically just playing patient waiting for the interceptions to come to you, as they have his whole career.

I think so too about Mitchell.  Very solid.

Looking forward to reading your pieces on the secondary.

Did you see Dan Campbell call for the interception just before Detroit did it?That was something special for sure.
