The Browns Board

There are examples of QBs who were cut and even paid to not play on the team that have done well just this year:  Wilson, Fields, Darnold come to mind.  Baker was let go by many teams.  Geno Smith is another

I'm not saying it will work out but there's no denying the Giants are a dumpster fire of an organization.  Jones may turn out to be a serviceable QB in the right system.

True but remember he was overdrafted by Pat Schumer I think, he's never been a stellar QB. He was good in the mediocre ACC and played for Duke not exactly a football powerhouse. I live in ACC country and his play wasn't memorable. The other QB's you mentioned were college standouts who have now found an organization that complements their talents. I will wait for the evaluation of afficionados who can tell if his talents align with Stefanski's other reclaim projects.

I'm not disagreeing with your assessment about Jones.  But I don't agree with college being a major factor of QB success.  Sure it helps to evaluate a player but some good QBs went to schools that would not be considered powerhouses:

    Josh Allen - Wyoming

    Mahomes - Texas Tech

    Lamar Jackson - Lousiville

    Jordan Love - Utah State

Drafting QBs is hard.  I'm all for trying a guy out and this seems like a good opportunity for Cleveland.  DTR is a project that may never pan out, Zappe is fodder, and Winston is a likeable guy but it's unlikely he's the franchise future.

I'm not sure Jones would be willing to come here but I don't see many options for him if he wants to start.  At 27 years old he probably does not want to be a backup.

The bottom teams as listed below.  The teams that do not have a potential long term QB already are Browns, Jets, Raiders, and Giants.  There's a rumor Jones said no to the Raiders.  Which leaves the Browns and Jets from this list.  Unless he's willing to sit - I don't see many starting opportunities outside Browns and Jets.

Those guys you listed were all standouts in their conferences and nationally recognized, Jones was not. I wanted us to draft Mahomes but Kansas City traded up and took him ahead of us, although I don't know if he was on the Browns' radar in that draft. IMO he doesn't have the pedigree or the NFL performance to demand a starting job.

  • Moot point now for this season as he just signed with the Vikings.

I'm a surprised he went here.  You have Darnold who's playing very well and JJ McCarthy as the potential future.  Guess he believes he will be able to out play them?

I was thinking he might go the Dolphins with Tua's history.

  • He's on their PS....so technically he's still available...if ya want him.

I'd absolutely be fine with bringing in Jones as the backup next season, but that's tough unless they just cut Watson.

I believe after june 1st the cap hit is less, so maybe #4 will be gone then

    $73m, still astronomical.

I heard that too. Pretty obvious when two washed up QBs can set records with this offense and 4 can only put up putrid numbers.

It's difficult for me to pick.  Jameis has always been Jameis.  What I mean is that he's the same player on every team he's played for.  He's unlikely to change and we see the results.

Jones has only played for a terrible Giants org.  There's a lot of film on him but I'd like to see how he plays with a different team.

The ONLY game I watched the Giants play this year was against the Browns; and I dare say he wasn't the easiest QB for Cleveland's defense to stop.  And why?  He was able to exploit the favorable matchup of rookie WR Malik Nabors vrs CB Martin Emerson.

@tiamat63 has written some good stuff about coverage matchups.  That's what winning in this league boils down to.  The more scoring threats on the perimeter, the less chance the defense has to take away the main one.  That's what this league is all about today.  My guess is the Giants just haven't really prioritized the perimeter until they added Nabors; and it's impacted Jones.  And now, they just let Barkley go play for their rivals in Philly; so there goes their assistance from the running game.

They actually looked competent and relatively well-prepared too...

Now we are looking up (or would it be down?) at them in the Race to #1 Draft Pick.

So in essence, they're on the way to beating us twice.
