That's a tough one, Steelers always seem to win most of their games year after year.

I thought they'd suffer when Ben left but they just keep trucking along.

And the Ravens just walked all over Houston 31-2.

    Yes and no.

They are now kind of in purgatory.

They are still a good regular season team that can't win in the playoffs.

I'd trade that over the 7th level of hell we've been in forever.

  •  They're a solid, but unspectacular team. I've said it before - competitive, won't embarrass the fans week in and out.   Can even slip in a division crown and playoff appearance building similar rosters.   The Browns should be so lucky to have such fortune.

But they're going to struggle against the upper tier teams - PHI, KC, BUF, DET...   Comes with the territory of having middle tier QB play.

Perhaps, but if you are a lifetime Steelers fan who expects their team to consistently be a Super Bowl contender, you would feel different when your team is a 10 win team every year that is one and done in the playoffs.

  • I guess I shouldn't be shocked given their last few years' history, but wow I'm truly surprised they've lost 3 in a row, 4 of 6.

KC really took it to them. Wilson had no answers, & they kind of pulled a "Browns" with Warren, who was making plays, but they leaned on Najee.

My brother-in-law in Pittsburgh has been anti-Tomlin for a long time. You guys think he stays if they go one & done?

funny you say "pulled a Browns" because if they (squeelers) get rid of Tomlin, they will have abandoned a formula / tenure (Noll, Cowher and Tomlin)

of success much like that of Brown, Collier  - before Modells tinkering and coaching / FO changes of the 70's right up til  baltiwhore.

(and of course picking up where they left off after Palmers debut)

IF they FO look for the shinier coach on the horizon - they could be entering into an abyss of theyre own?

Filled with mistake after mistake CLE style or stay the course by keeping Tomlin.

This is a different NFL from what ordinary fan like me remembers.

Marty Schottenheimer wishes he had a lot more fans with this train of thought.  His 2 biggest mistakes?  Chip Banks wasn't Lawrence Taylor; and the knucklehead who threw batteries at Elway had the accuracy of Kyle Boller.  I'm obviously kidding there.

Schottenheimer's regular season teams played some fun wide open football; but his post season mentality was an ass puckered conservative approach.  When the Browns played the Jets at home in the midst of NY's 7 game losing streak - that game shouldn't have come down to a roughing the passer call on Mark Gasti-Naughty or overtime.

I keep hearing Tomlin is such a great coach because the ownership and FO there has made it an easy place for a HC to thrive since it brought Chuck Noll there.  Then it brought Schottenheimer's star coaching assistant Bill Cowher there and Tomlin is only the 3rd HC in all this time since the early 70s.  That said, that fan base has never had to be so patient that they had watch Cleveland beat them scoring 48 points in Pittsburgh in the 1st round of the playoffs.  That was the 1st of 4 straight first round post season exits in a place that isn't used to that kind of thing.  The difference between a good ownership and a bad ownership starts with the know how to hire and the know who to lean on.  Does Jimmy have any of us confident with either of those 2 things?

    Good post!

Hey, as frustrating as it was with Marty and the playoffs, he remains the only coach in NFL history to be shunned from the HOF with 200+ wins. Critics point to his 5-13 playoff record. My biggest problems with Marty was taking Dave Puzzoli off the field on 3rd & 19 after he sacked Elway, and Herman Fontenot up the middle on 3rd & 2 in OT. (I'm over it now lol). Also, Marty got fired from the Chargers because he wanted Drew Brees at QB....he was 100% correct on that one.

So how in the hell is Bill Cowher in the HOF? 1-4 in AFC Title games at home, and could have been 0-5 on the failed Hail Mary. Yeah, he "won" a (tainted) Super Bowl, but just my opinion, he's the most over rated HC in the modern era. Rant over.

  • The last time the Pittsburgh Steelers fired their head coach, Lyndon B. Johnson was President.

That just absolutely boggles the mind.

It all starts with the Ownership.  As we learned the hard way, if your owner is going bankrupt - winning hibernates.

  • I remember hearing about what a headcase Pickens was when he was entering the Draft, then the Steelers drafted him and all the talking heads were "What a great value pick the Steelers made!".

Guy dropped at least three passes last night, which is why Steelers fans were giving him shit. ?

  • He’s nothing like his dad.

And Mike Evans caught his $3 mil pass to go over 1000 yds for the season. 11 straight 1000 yd seasons to tie Jerry Rice. Baker looked for him to get him those final yards. Team went bananas.

That really came down to the wire.  Glad Mike got the record.

  • I hate George Pickens! I still can't believe he whined about the snow when we beat them with Jameis.

  • It's going to continue to be interesting to watch what the Steelers do concerning the QB position and perhaps Mike Tomlin.

This is Tomlin's 18th season as the Steelers head coach. The Steelers have won a playoff game in four of those seasons.

There has to be a certain amount of acknowledgement that the franchise is competitive and steady.  That said, during Ben's prime years the AFC was loaded and they had to contend with that.

The roster got older and there has been no franchise QB to succeed him. Their steady competitiveness and playoffs appearances in a QB driven NFL is impressive in its own way.   I don't think you'd find many coaches who would do better with their roster(s).  Doesn't mean I believe Coach Tomlin is a spectacular tactician either.

The problem with that is it requires introspection from Managements and Ownership.  Something sorely lacking in today's world; just asking one's self "have I contributed enough/contributed to the problem?".
