What makes him unqualified for the position?
The alcoholism seems like a hell of a starting point.
But even if you ignore that, he doesn't have the level of military career or government career that most other secretaries of defense have had.
I get he was picked because he said things Trump likes on TV. I also get you're the most intelligent one here that will apparently try to defend this. So I'm curious, what do you think makes him qualified? Or are you just going to take the route of "what is qualification anyway?" or some vague interpretation?

After seeing what they did to Kavanaugh, I don't think that accusations being thrown around by the side who doesn't want him confirmed should be taken at face value. Add to that, his ex-wife (who's at the center of a lot of the accusations) publicly stated that NBC's info about their marriage was incorrect and she would be lawyering up over what they'd claimed. I don't know why they got divorced, and I don't care because it's not relevant to his job. If his alcohol use ever got him into serious trouble while he was in the military, why wasn't there any official documentation for it? No demotion? No record of punitive action? If it was as big an issue as his opponents were saying it was, there would have been more to it than "your coworker said you did this 20 years ago..."
But even if you ignore that, he doesn't have the level of military career or government career that most other secretaries of defense have had.
That's a positive for me, personally. Tenure =/= merit. Lloyd Austin, Mark Esper, James Mattis, Ashton Carter, and Robert Gates were all overwhelmingly voted for during their confirmation hearings. All of them except Gates had a higher rank than Hegseth when they left the service, but did that translate to them doing a good job? No, not in my opinion.

No, I have concrete reasons for liking him.
- He has military leadership experience, but did not climb high enough up the ladder for politics to be more important than competence - this starts coming into play once they get up around the colonel rank.
- He did not spend any time on the board of Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, etc
- Hundreds of guys who served in combat under him all went to bat for him when these accusations came out. I don't think that many would have done so if he was a shitty leader (of which, the military has plenty). I take that into much higher consideration than what his ex-wife's sister claims about their failed marriage.
- My view is that the ethnic/sexual/gender diversity of the military is absolutely irrelevant to its efficacy as a fighting force. He agrees.
- His priority is military lethality and deterrence. Lloyd Austin absolutely failed in this regard, and hot conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine were the result. The Gazan/Russian response to Biden versus Trump makes it crystal clear to me that no one respected Biden nor the leadership he placed in charge of what should be the most powerful military force in the world.
-
I actually like that Trump is picking people with experience in television. To be successful in live television, you have to work well under pressure and be an effective communicator. PBS is reporting that military enlistment has surged, and as of two weeks ago, was the highest it's been in 8 years. Anecdotally, I know a few kids who enlisted because of the changes Hegseth said he would make when he was announced as Trump's pick.
- I think this last point is really important. If he didn't have that experience, I don't think he makes it through the confirmation hearing. I think that Tulsi, RFK, and Kash will struggle more than Hegseth in their attempts to get through the senate.
You have established that you have concerns with his character and his lack of experience. What specific aspects of his job will he do poorly because of those issues?

Kinda hard to go "but Kavanaugh!" (we can't trust what they're saying) And then go "well the military never said anything, so it must be fine." Because our own military has never covered up any awful activities within it's own ranks, right?
There were much more recent allegations than 20 years ago. Plenty of allegations from his time at Fox. Shit, his own mom wrote that letter 6 years ago.
If you're taking the stance that all of those allegations are lies and they're just made up by Dems to attack Hegseth, than so be it. I won't convince you otherwise. I think that's a very head in the sand response, but it's not anything I'll be able to add to that'll change your mind either way.
So your stance is that more tenure, increased responsibility, and higher levels of leadership in the government and / or military don't help you perform better as the highest military governmental official. Alright... Again, seems like an insane stance. One against almost how every single role / occupation in the world hires. But alright
And further responses
- politics (office or otherwise) affects every leadership role in every organization in existence. You said he only got to a level where competence mattered more. You could just as easily argue he didn't get any higher due to a lack of competence.
- alright
- his boys supported him... Definitely unheard qualifications there
- he wants to remove women from combat roles, even if qualified. They've already banned transgendered folks. Doesn't sound like "irrelevant" to me. Sounds like "fit in a certain bucket". The military has enough recruitment issues and his views on sex, sexual orientation, etc are turning people away.
- so he believes in something you believe ... Not sure how that speaks to his qualifications
- really? TV presence? That's what we're scraping for here as "qualifications"? Crazy to think no one in high military or government leadership has to communicate well or work under pressure. No greater pressure than being in front of a camera and reading lines. No greater communication challenge than telling old folks that migrants are coming for them.
- the confirmation hearing is just a show. There's not actually analysis or vetting going on. It's all performative. The Reps have the majority and they'll do whatever Trump asks. Hilarious to think that Hegseth being on Fox and friends is why he got confirmed haha. I mean, it's why he got nominated. How Trump saw him. But to think it made any difference in the hearing. Laughable.
It seems like you think he's qualified because of his lack of experience. His lack of qualifications makes him qualified. Oh, and he says things you agree with.
Not really seeing what makes him qualified even remotely.
I don't know the ins and outs of the job. I know damn near every other person in that role has had mountains more experience than Hegseth. Ignoring his alcoholic abusive past. Ignoring his concerning born again militant Christian views. Even then, I don't see his qualifications.
I don't know exactly what the CEO of Microsoft does day to day but I can tell you then guy that's only been an Office salesman for 10 years, or a guy that's only been an individual contributing software engineer, isn't qualified for the role.
I imagine running the military is like steering a massive ship. He could start fucking up immediately and we either won't know the damage for a while or there will be enough guardrails in place to limit the damage. Not like the entire military industrial complex and it's level of influence in our country isn't completely fucked already.

how low can you peck?
A. You don't understand what a Sec of Defense is.
B. Your deliberate acceptance of the anonymous rumors - is bs. Many, many of the men and women who served with
Hegseth loved him. Read his books. Read something that isn't a "gay/trans gazette". seriously. The Fox News folks that work with him love the man. He loves our Warriors - he used to BE ONE.
C. James Mattis and lloyed Austin did NOTHING for the rank and file Veterans in our military. Hegseth
is ALL ABOUT our Warriors, and our military folks. Hegseth is 100% about supporting our TROOPS. Bigshots like Mattis and Austin do not even think about our rank and file military folks, they did nothing to help our veterans.
D. The slur about alcoholism is not true, and was years and years ago.
E. Hegseth is a combat veteran - and a civilian. He sees both sides - his Honor and Integrity is oustanding. Anyone can go look - enlistment has plummeted. Mattis and Austin contributed to that over swamp politics and their careers in politics.
F. He is an outstanding Sec of Defense pick, so "F" stands for "Fook You".
-
Furthermore -go look up why the Sec of Defense position was created.
You are enraged over the justified expulsion of the dei cancer out of our military.
You don't really have any understanding about the issue, but bird bitch away, pecker.

"The alcoholism rumors aren't true! And if they are, it was long ago!!!"
Your wishy washy goal post moving bullshit you apply to damn near every situation these days.
Again, the dude is very clearly not qualified. All we've gotten is that you like his politics and he served in the military for a bit.
If this is what you feel "qualified" is, then your bar is extremely low. And it'll be a reference point for any accusation you make about a "DEI hire" not being qualified. Because, again, we all know what the MAGA dog whistle is when you screech "DEI".
That is the point of this thread. You're defending a man with barely any qualifications for an incredibly important role. So the next time you tell "DEI hire!" at an overqualified black woman we'll all be real clear what you mean...

you are such a dishonest bird.
The dei hire fire chief FAILED. The dei elected mayor FAILED. Biden's dei appointed transportation wonk FAILED. biden's dei appointed press secretary FAILED.
DEI in our military has FAILED. DEI in our education system has FAILED. DEI in corporate American businesses has FAILED.
Advancing people to positions based on DEI is a disgrace. It should have nothing to do with the reason to hire anyone - it must be a merit based hire.
biden's entire presidency was a complete FAILURE.
You have no point in this thread except you want to bitch about dei being thrown out into the garbage.
You are unqualified to be taken seriously in any discussion.

Says the guy who never served a microsecond in or near the military.

Imagine ranting against DEI...
Again, Pete wasn't hired just because he's white and straight as they set out to hire only straight and white guys as their employment missionary statement.
You can argue about his qualifications, but there's a huge difference to your post title.
So far you don't think he's qualified because he drinks? Doesn't want women in combat roles? Seems more of a difference of philosophies than qualifications.
Why the sudden interest in qualifications anyways?
Damn, listening to his references speak, he seems like a good fit. Served in the military a bit??
https://www.newsweek.com/i-served-pete-hegseth-hes-right-pick-defense-secretary-opinion-1999360
The Department of Defense needs more than just a qualified candidate to be secretary—it needs a proven leader. It requires a candidate who not only understands military strategy and operations, but also possesses true character, loyalty, and vision to inspire the men and women who dutifully serve our country.
There are plenty of highly qualified candidates who would gladly fill this role, but the Department of Defense needs a proven leader. It needs someone who has a deep understanding of service, sacrifice, and the American warrior spirit. Pete Hegseth is exactly the man for the job.
Some might consider Hegseth an unconventional choice. Having served directly in combat over three deployments, he aligns with president-elect Donald Trump's tendency to select candidates who go against the status quo. Hegseth represents the ideal liaison for a new era in American defense policy.
Hegseth embodies a rare combination: elite education, battlefield experience, and unwavering dedication to the United States. After graduating from Princeton, he could have chosen any path from the storied Ivy League halls. While his peers moved on to Wall Street and other corridors of power, Hegseth chose a path of selfless service—commissioning as an infantry officer and deploying to Guantanamo Bay, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
It is that service, and his willingness to shoulder real risks in combat, that sets Hegseth apart from so many other public figures. He has led soldiers in difficult and high-stakes environments. His leadership is not theoretical—it has been tested in the crucible of combat.
As someone who served alongside then-second lieutenant Pete Hegseth during a deployment to Guantanamo Bay, I witnessed how he embodies the qualities that make him a natural-born leader and a man worthy of safeguarding our nation's survival.
During that deployment, Hegseth stood out as a leader among leaders. While many officers might delegate and maintain their distance, he led by example. His exceptional professionalism and physical and mental fortitude inspired his soldiers to follow him willingly. Leadership isn't granted through service—it's earned through action, and he earned his men's trust.
Hegseth's leadership style was not about rank or privilege—it was about responsibility and respect. His actions showed integrity, courage, and genuine care for those who served under him. These qualities extended well beyond his military service, as he continued to be one of America's most vocal and effective advocates for veterans and active-duty troops after his service.
Hegseth's loyalty to those with whom he served remains steadfast years after our deployment. He maintains connections through unit reunions and personal friendships, while using his public platform to champion veterans, warfighters, and their families. His dedication to service members has never faltered.
In an era when so many in Washington seem detached from the realities of military service, Pete Hegseth's firsthand experience and unshakable commitment to our armed forces stands out as invaluable.
Those who have worked with him, as I have, know his leadership is not simply inspiring—it's contagious. I credit him, in part, for my decision to transition from the Army National Guard to active duty, where I continued to serve in operational and combat assignments worldwide. His example demonstrated true leadership and purposeful service, leaving an indelible mark on countless patriots who served alongside him.
The secretary of defense must be someone the military trusts—someone troops know has walked in their boots and understands the weight of their sacrifice. Pete Hegseth embodies this level of trust.
Time and time again, he has proven that he will put America's interests first, that he will defend the values that make this country great. Moreover, he would serve as an inspiration for the next generation of warriors dedicated to serving their country.
If there's one person I would follow in combat again, it's Pete Hegseth. If there's one person who can restore faith in the Department of Defense, inspire our military, and defend this nation with both wisdom and courage, it's him. America needs a secretary of defense who leads by example, values loyalty, and understands true service.

you are such a dishonest bird.

Cal, this is exactly the point. You have no idea whether DEI played a role in those folks getting hired. In reality, these are qualified individuals. They're just minorities, women, etc. that did something you don't like. Therefore, because they're a minority, you say it's DEI and that's why they got hired (they're unqualified).
Again, it's very, very obvious why the right wing has made DEI their new rallying call and it's very obvious why you've picked it up.
It becomes a conversation about qualifications. Trump is proposing folks that have little to no qualifications, Hegseth being one of the worst. But of course he's a white male, and a guy you like, so obviously no DEI hyperventilating.
He's more of a DUI hire anyway

I know damn near every other person in that role has had mountains more experience than Hegseth.
People who only attained the rank of Lieutenant when they were in the military have also been appointed to the role. Strangely, I don't recall you or anyone else calling into question their lack of experience. Hegseth made Major, which is just about the median of military officer rank.
It seems like you think he's qualified because of his lack of experience. His lack of qualifications makes him qualified.
No, this is completely wrong. I'm saying he is qualified because of his experience and have cited his leadership as a Major. Being a Colonel or General doesn't add bonus points here, for me at least.
Not like the entire military industrial complex and it's level of influence in our country isn't completely fucked already.
You acknowledge that the military industrial complex is "completely fucked" but also seem to prefer the last 7 SecDefs who were sitting on the board of Raytheon or Lockheed or in a DC Think Tank prior to their appointment over Hegseth, an outsider. Do you want more of the same?

I mean, hypocrisy is nothing new for you all (see almost any other thread). But damn, you're speed running hypocrisy this time around.
