The Browns Board

What if the Browns not only draft a QB with their first pick, but actually trade UP to do so?

For what point? Is there really a QB that is likely to be a surefire success in the draft.  Neither Ward or Sanders is worth that much in my opinion

Well I can't imagine them doing it. Then again, the Browns front office thinks their brilliant.

The Rams have given Matthew Stafford and his agent permission to shop around regarding his value.  One website toyed with the idea of him coming to us...but with the 40 some-odd million left in his contract for next season the author, at the end of the article, admitted that it would be a bit of a pipe-dream that he would wind up with us.

Was just talking with my daughter's friend (a Patriots fan like most everyone around where I am) and he wants the two QB's to go by the 3rd pick so the Pat's can pick a great defensive player.  The Patriots are like we were before we got Myles.  Cannot rush the passer no matter how many guys they blitz.  Like Ballpeen used to say, Us blitzing is like running 1 or 2 of our players off the field.  🙂

LOL....it was maddening. We would blitz 2 players who would both attack the same gap, essentially blocking each other.

Speaking of New England who needs a pass rusher, I know of a team with a pretty good pass rusher asking to be traded.  New England could offer up a nice package of picks.

Myles for #4 this year plus whatever else we could get this year or next.  Being that the Pats pick is #4 it holds a lot of value.  I don't know if we could get another #1 pick. I'll leave all of that to Berry and the Pats.

I want their 3rd string QB...whether we trade Myles or not.  I watched him play that final game against Buffalo and he did a great job.  Of course Buffalo was using many backups.

Yes, that has banged around my little grey cells also.  What if they REALLY want Sanders and don't want the Titans to take him or trade their pick to the Giants or someone?  That's what has rattled around somewhere in my head...but I don't give that much of a chance of happening.   It's just that I'm not sure if that's coming from the BACK of my head or from some other side.  I know that the back of my head is smarter than I am.  🙂

It's getting closer to the silly season with false leads, smart hints and fake draft news, so maybe you're onto something here.?

Anything is possible, but I doubt that would happen unless we traded Garrett to the Giants.

The bottom line is there isn't a sure fire QB this year, not that there ever is, but you get the point.  We are at a point where we need to get younger and cheaper.  The best way to do that is to draft players and load up on rookie contracts.

If anything we will be seeking to add picks over this year and next.  I will say i could see us trying to move up to get more players in the first 4-5 rounds and fewer in the late rounds.  Two 6th rounders could probably get us back in to the 5th round.

This is an important draft.  We need at least 1 player who pretty much starts right out of the gate and another 2 who contribute this year and are looked at as starters next year. I mean good players.  Anybody can be named as starter.  We don't need to keep accumulating back-ups and special team guys.  We have plenty of those.

I see the draft going one of two ways.  If berry has been given the assurance that he is safe this year, we will draft a QB.

If not, he rolls the dice with a FA QB and drafts players in the first few rounds he feels who can step in right away who can help us win now.

Another tell will be what we do with Garrett.  If he is traded before the draft, we are in win now mode.  If it is after the draft and the picks are for future use, then he has some time.

Are you or I making this pick?

No, but Andrew Berry is, and if he really, really wants one of those guys for some odd reason, he could make sure he gets him by trading up to #1 overall.

Maybe it is addition through subtraction.  Then again that assumes that Berry doesn't sign some new schmuck to fill the position.

I wonder if Berry even asks the question as to why a team is letting a player go before he runs out and signs them?

  • Here's an interesting QB prospect... he was a member of the 2018 recruiting class at Oregon, was in college for seven seasons. Moved on to Texas Tech, suffered some injuries, finished up at Louisville. He's 25 years old, 6'5" 225lbs with a very good arm. Some scouts really like him.

Thanks for sharing that Dutch!  It's nice for us to see other options to consider beside Mason Graham at #2 overall. ? All kidding aside, this guy could get snapped up in a mid round.  He's definitely showing some goodies in the skillset. I like his wealth of experience blending with his best football at the right time. The TD:INT ratio is also quite competitive. Like all those he's competing with - success ahead is at the mercy of the franchise he goes to.

Here's a look at some 2024 stats for all those he's competing with:

     Easy there, Ciara.

That said, kid has a nice touch on the throws outside the number. Nose of the ball has a decent that drops into the bucket for his receivers.

Not a fan of medical school players, but a day 3 look couldn't hurt anyone.  I have a 12 day stretch off coming up, so I'll get back to you and get several of my pieces posted in that time frame.  Along with a deeper look at Schuck.

@texasag1969 haven't forgotten about Stewart. I'm 3 games in and, SHOCKER, DJs hype doesn't even come close to matching his production.  Which includes either significant body composition changes or a position change at the next level.   But More on that later.

My wager of him not being a first round player still stands.

What part of mid round did you miss?  There were some beautiful throws on that video demonstrating arm strength, precision and damn good anticipation.

You and me differ that supply and demand of the most important position always has teams reaching above and beyond the BPA thing every year.  Supply and demand also dictates in other areas of the draft which is why we see a run on certain position groups almost every draft - causing/enticing teams to pick a player ahead of when they wanted/hoped to. With that reality, I can see this kid going in a mid round.  That said, wouldn't be stunned if he went in round 5 or 6-7 either.  When guys like Tom Brady and Brock Purdy got picked in rounds 6 and 7 respectively - hard to be surprised about anything.

The anticipation stood out to me as well. But it's a highlight piece, so I can't tell if those are throws setup by play structure or if he's showing EBP.

    @flugel said:

We don't differ that teams absolutely reach or let slide based on supply/demand buddy.  Where we differ is the 'Why'. If you know a QB is a marginal, developmental prospect that you'd spend a 5th on one year and looking at a 3rd the next, convention wisdom tells me to pass on the artificially inflated value.   Because projects like that rarely change the face of your franchise.  Meanwhile midround lineman are the lifeblood of the NFL.

Of course.  Not letting ones hand be forced is a patient strategy few can deploy.

When I think "mid round". I think 3.25-4.5.  So late day 2, early(over) day 3.  The latter seems most likely.

And there is now an article on PackersWire that says he may have just Combine tested himself out of still being there at their #23 spot and maybe into the top 10. Up there with Garrett's performance, but beat him by .05 in the 40 and one inch short of Garrett's 41" vert, 3 inches further in the broad jump. About the same height and 5 lbs lighter. Sure smells like a sub for me. I'll get you a consolation beer.???

I'm more than aware bubs, it's sort of my thing.    The straight line speed shows up on film, I won't argue against that.

The sub 5.11 model does tend to show improvement in our SPS ratings, which we're working hard to collect.
