  • so as the devils advocate- ^

Professor Sachs  didnt speak about Russia claiming Georgia in late 2008

    and Crimea in March 2014.

Is this tit for tat? reclaiming old terrritory from Ukraine in exchange for the Nato creep Sachs described?

Only now since Biden stepped in it - Russia is/was emboldened for more ?

Let me know how you feel about Ukraine using the money from the U.S. to make pension payments.

You didn't answer the question. Did Ukraine start the war like Trump has said?

    No.

Trump is his own worst enemy by his inability to correctly articulate or clarify what he means, and now of course we have the media taking full advantage,

He didn’t imply that it was Ukrainian tanks that rolled in to Russia 3 years ago. Trump  probably maintains that Ukraine  “started the war” because of their policies and that Russia was provoked…or other trivial reasons.

Exactly what that entails Trump has yet to explain.

But whatever the reasons are they will not be satisfactory. Unless something compelling enough arises that makes me change my mind, I don’t stand with Trump on this issue. I don’t like sending billions to Ukraine either, so it’s like being between a rock and a hard place.

There is no reason on this planet compelling enough to give Russia a pass for invading Ukraine.

However, I do suspect that Pres Trump was playing a deal making game.

If Trump were to call putrid putin a "thug" and a "war criminal"...., and praises Zelensky..then stopping the war goes nowhere. I haven't seen Trump explain why he said that - which, if he means it, is a very dumb thing to say. But Trump is no dummy.

actually, even snopes says it's not proven to be true - the russians use disinformation like a fleet of drones. They always have - the soviet union was a failed system - russia is too, but survives with china as a partner, and energy. The only way russia can really survive economically, is via trying to dominate the energy trade. putin invaded the Ukraine over economics, which is exactly what the excuse for starving out millions of Ukrainians - by stalin.

Russia was used to having a giant army - of Polish, East German, Ukraine, other countries in the Baltic region - and controlling and usurping wealth from other countries is how the soviet union survived, and even that failed and the soviet union dissolved.

Putin demands it back. I predict russia will go invade another country over some pretext, even if they stop the war with Ukraine.

Putin will manipulate elections in these countries, to get his puppets "elected".

he'll never stop - or the russian communist system failed.

Which, btw, is the same reason china wants Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines so desperately. to prop up their failed - severely vicvious authoritarian communist governments. Those two countries can never have enough power - and dominating other countries and regions gets them more of it.

You bring up a good point, one that even Woody may say is a valid.

Reagan never trusted Gorbachev but he always had dialogue with him to the point of almost becoming friends.

    What happened next?

The Berlin Wall came down, and shortly thereafter the Soviet Union dissolved.

If this is also Trumps approach, then he’s pretty slick and no dummy….not that I ever thought he was a dummy.

This war isn’t about good guys and bad guys, there are just bad guys vs. bad guys.

However he forgot to mention that in 1994 Clinton persuaded Ukraine to disarm its nukes…

Leonid Kravchuk agreed to surrender roughly 1,900 nuclear warheads in exchange for security assurances from the US and United Kingdom, as well as a commitment from Russia to respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

    So here we are.

Russia broke its promise and we kept ours by backing Ukraine…whether that falls under “security assurances” I don’t know.

  • NATO was never supposed to be an option for Ukraine.  Someone renigged.

russia always breaks their promises. I've mentioned before - I read the book "Germs...."

and it talked about how the U.S. and russia joined into a treaty that said no offensive bioweapon research.

years later, we found out that russia took their offensive bioweapon research underground, and dramatically boosted funding for it.

    of course they did.

    it's like the old story:

'A man started to climb a high, steep mountain when a snake asked the man to carry him along. “But you’re a snake,” the man said. The snake smiled. “Don’t worry. I won’t bite you.” After days of arduous climbing, the man reached the mountain summit, whereupon the poisonous snake bit him. As he lay dying, the man cried out, “You said you wouldn’t bite me!” His reptilian hitchhiker looked at him and said, “Ha! You knew I was a snake when you picked me up.”'
