Stats for Top QB Prospects

The Browns Board
28 7 600
  • Things I like to look at are Completion %, TD:INT ratio, and amount of starting experience.  As we witness last year, Jayden Daniels & Bo Nix both has starting experience at 2 different college programs.  Consequently, both had very good rookie years.   This year, there's quite a few QBs that started in 2 college programs like Sanders, Ward (played at 3 different programs), McCord, Gabriel, Howard and probably others.

While looking at the stats - it's also important to factor in strength of schedule as well as surrounding talent.

Film shows how they do under pressure so I hope our FO is watching as much film as they can to make this big decision.

Yup, I like:  # of attempts, completion %, # INT's (I too look at passing TD's but in reality, it's usually just a play where the goal line got in the way), Yards Per Attempt, and QB rating.  Usually the most important for me is the completion %, Attempts & Yards per Attempt.  But as you say, doing a good job in multiple schools would be important.

Very good point about the importance of completion %, attempts and yards per attempt Orion. Thanks!

One of the draft guides I got (Lindy's Sports Pro Football Draft 2025) grades the QB Class as an A- this year and the Offensive Tackles as a B-.  I don't know how much stock I hold in their grades per say; but I'm starting to think this QB class might be a little underrated.  I think something like a B- hints you may not want to wait until the 4th or 5th round to draft someone from that position group (ie; Offensive Tackle).  Yeah we landed a depth type in FA; but that's a position it would be nice to be elite at.  It's gonna be interesting to see how this draft unfolds.

I hear Carson Palmer's younger brother Jordan has become pretty good at teaching pre-draft QB Prospects a little Evelyn Woodhead Speed Reading on the progressions.  He never made really made it at the NFL Level but sometimes the backup QBs/Almost Made It pedigrees are good at teaching it all (ie: Gary Kubiak, Kellen Moore, Mike Kaftka, Bill Musgrave, etc..).

Actually, the 'depth' we signed is probably as good, if not better, than Wills was. - LT is a major position.  Typically drafted like QB's, at or near the very top of the draft.  Of course, we need both....but they're only going to let us pick once.  ( I hope Berry remembers that he actually has to be there on Thursday this year )

The Browns could have walked into the Golden Corral buffet line and signed the easiest guy to cook for to upgrade Wills.  That said, the team that had the Tackle the Browns just signed made upgrading LT their top priority this offseason and why?  QB is an important position so they have to protect that investment Jayden Daniels with their version of the best veteran LT with an impressive Pro Bowl inventory. Something compelled them to not settle so let's not pretend the Browns should settle by just setting the bar at finding a guy better than Wills. Anyone willing to break a sweat meets that criteria.  When you go to insure something really important - you want to make sure that insurance is reliable right?

Adding depth at Tackle here was important considering we had 3 (Wills, Jones, Conklin) the frequented IR so often - we could rarely consider them as reliable. Lucas can help us as depth in that line of thinking.  Hopefully, he proves his last team and me wrong as far thinking we should forget trying to significantly upgrade LT this off season. There's should be a gem at the top of round 2 like Minnesota's Aireontae Ersery or Oregon's Josh Conerly Jr.

FWIW, somebody in the FO needs to start using more incentive based contracts instead of hurrying to guarantee all this money to the oft-injured guys. This place is a Drew Rosenhaus dream come true having clients with guaranteed money not suiting up for the Browns on game days.  You know he tells his guys not to risk the rest of their career  putting it on the line for the Browns.  This Abdul Carter that everyone is love with all of a sudden has a shoulder injury, stress fracture in the foot and Drew Rosenhaus. He's an awesome player but his 1st 16 game season really took a toll on his body.

LOL.........Agreed.  But the draft goes the way the draft goes.  You probably cannot address every need.  BPA doesn't always address a need.  But I like that Berry got this guy that at least knows the ropes.

I agree. You can only go for the FA who fit a need and you can afford.  As for BPA, unless you have a specific need at QB or maybe a long snapper in the late rounds, you should always draft BPA.

First, drafting the BPA is never going to hurt your team.

Secondly, you have some flexibility in drafting BPA because all players don't have grades that fall exactly in order. Lot's of players have the same grade, so with-in those ties a team can skew the picks towards team needs.

It's not like a team is going to end up drafting 5 guards.

The draft is for bringing in the best talent you can find.  Free agency is for addressing holes in the roster.

But an argument can be made for this Browns team that BPA also would address a need too...

If the Browns drafted an interior OLineman, they have one guard in Bitonio that probably is playing his last season, and another in Teller that could be moved on from soon because of his advancing age and injury history. Pocic at center isn't a spring chicken either.

If they take a OTackle, that's an obvious need. Stefanski's offense can always use another good tight end, and the roster is pretty bare beyond Njoku. Jerry Jeudy emerged as a legit starting WR last season, but there's definitely room for another starting-caliber WR, either a bigger body guy or a quick twitch slot guy. RB is an obvious need.

On defense, would anyone be upset at the Browns finally putting a stud DE opposite Myles via the draft? I've only been praying to the god I don't believe in since the draft after Myles' rookie season. (Bradley Chubb if my memory serves me) A DTackle? Of course we need those.

We desperately need linebackers, especially if JOK's career is over. At corner, Newsome and Emerson are on their last season's of their rookie contracts. Ward is entering his eighth NFL season. Safety opposite of Delpit has been one disappointing free agent signing after another.

And yes, even if the Browns don't pull the trigger at #2 on a QB, I've been banging the table for the Browns to locate a mid-round guy that they think would fit in Stefanski's offense as a backup/spot starter/hopeful eventual starter guy.

The Browns need offense in a desperate way. I recently read that they've scored 21+ points in less than half of their games the last 4 seasons....atrocious.

If they draft Abdul Carter over offense there's going to be some melt downs.

Draft a QB at 2, offensive line at 33. Then go from there ( LBs please, for the 30th years in a row lol).

Even Abdul Carter's matchup with Notre Dame as impressive as it was - he had to leave a handful of defensive series early in pain due to re-aggravating his shoulder injury.  His talent is hard to resist - I GET that.  If they're going to boycott what their research tells them is the best QB for the 2nd overall pick in the draft; especially when they already have the best Edge Rusher in the league - my guess is Travis Hunter might be the best non-QB to select.  If you need a QB and you have the 2nd overall pick - there's no guarantee next year's QB class will reward the Browns for refraining from this one.

IMO, there's a great LBer from Oklahoma (Danny Stutsman)at 6'4" 242 pounds the Browns may be able to snag in round 3 or 4.  He's a very instinctive sideline to sideline kind of guy great at reading pass. 4 year starter...

Here's the results I found for him at the Combine

    Event Result Position Rank
    40-yard dash 4.52 4
    10-yard split 1.55 5
    Vertical Jump 34 inches 10

How does anybody really know how good these QBs will be?

Total inexact science. While the Browns have had their share of messed up draft picks, they aren't alone. I'd rather have a young QB like Sanders than rely on a veteran QB that is just about washed up. Take the chance, give this woebegone franchise hope.

Edit: Bob beat me to the next 3 sentences ?... We don't know there isn't - do we?  Outside of all the hear say - what assures us there isn't a QB worthy of the #2 pick?  It's always gonna be a crap-shoot.  In 1999, 2 of the top 3 QBs drafted that got the most pre-draft love and adoration were Tim Couch and Akili Smith. The only successful guy of the 3 was Donovan McNabb that Andy Reid found a striking resemblance to coming out of college was Brett Favre.  The Eagles were piss poor enough in 98 to warrant the 1st overall pick in 99 IF the Browns weren't re-entering the league like an Expansion Team so the excuses for Couch on a bad team didn't fly with me.  Anyway, from 2000 to 2009 - McNabb led Philly to the playoffs 8 times including 5 Division Titles & 5 NFC Championship Appearances and 1 Super Bowl (meaning 1 NFC Championship).  It was also important for him to have a Coach like Andy Reid; because the offensive staffs in Cleveland or Cincy at the time could have easily ruined him at the time.  That's an important factor often forgotten when nobody but the young QB gets scapegoated for failure from the Owner, FO, and Coaching staff.

Remember the overwhelming consensus in here that posted Josh Allen wasn't anyone we should consider?  I'm sorry but right there - we were all fired (including me) as QB draft experts; especially considering how many guys thought Josh Rosen was an ideal 1st round prospect (not including me).  This was an epic swing from our ass and miss as fans.  Even worse for me, SU is my 2nd favorite college football program (as someone that lived in Upstate NY the 1st 30 years of my life) and my reluctance to want McNabb was he couldn't ever win the Big Game in the Big East.  What he did in Philly should assure everyone I'm far more Nostradumbass than Nostradamus when it comes to pegging NFL QBs right.  That doesn't mean I can't have fun talking about our possibilities to upgrade the QB position today.

FWIW, as recently as last year - I don't remember reading a bunch of us in here predicting strong rookie success for Bo Nix who was drafted in the 1st round.

If there was a QB worth the #2 pick, I’d agree.

    This is so well said.

Until we get our young QB of the future, there IS no hope.  Perhaps it's not Ward or Sanders...but we gotta step up to the plate and swing the bat at a QB early in this draft because the edge rusher, CB or LT are NOT going to throw any TD passes.  And without someone who can do that, there is no hope.

Now, would those other positions help the team?  Sure.  But help the team get where?  We could use every pick on DL, CB, S, Lb'er and put an old dude a QB.  So what?  We lead the league in sacks.  Great.  That and a quarter will get you a gum ball.  We've got to score points in order to win.

Oh, we'll get our QB in the 2026 draft.  Really?  How much will we have to give up to get in position to do that?  Nothing?  Because we'll tank all next season?  And the players and fans will be ok with that?  Then all of the coaches get fired?  And the new coaches want players that fit in round holes when we've been acquiring square players to fill our square hole theme?

No offense Orion, but thank dog you are not the GM of the Browns.

We don't have a QB and I don't know if Ward or Sanders are worth the #2 pick but since we need a QB we should take one of them regardless is an absolutely horrible take. That's how teams absolutely waste prime draft picks on quarterbacks like Daniel Jones or Anthony Richardson.

Misses happen at the top of the draft, but some like Jones and Richardson really aren't surprises. There were so many red flags with both, but the Giants and Colts stepped up to the plate and swung the bat at a QB early in the draft.

It's not the fact that you think the Browns should take a QB at #2 that I've always had a problem with, it's why you think they should do it. If you were "Ward and Sanders are top tier QB prospects that I feel are franchise QBs" I might disagree with it, but I'd get why you were so adamant about doing it.

But you aren't pounding the proverbial table for one of those guys because of worth. You are literally suggesting we roll the dice on QBs you even admit are somewhat 'eh' prospects with the #2 overall pick.

    No offense Orion,

None taken, of course.   After all, we're all entitled to our wrong opinions.  ☺️

I did however, hedge my bet by saying 'early in the draft'.  That can be day two if our superb evaluators decide that the QB available at #2 is not worthy.  (Kenny Picket is one of those QB's that you eluded to)
