Yellowston 1923 - the series
-
each one is like a movie - it's longer than just a show, and I'm intrigued by the actors talking about the characters they play, and how some scenes were done.
LIke, last night (on record, of course) - they talked about how the ocean/tugboat sinking was done - the two of them were stranded on top of the overturned tugboat. They said they went into swim training, the tugboat was actually built and constructed to flip over - IN A POOL where they had pro scuba divers, etc.
One of the amazing aspects of Yellowstone 1923 = it explains how the Yellowstone Ranch came about to be in the early generations. Harrison Ford, other serious major actors, actually every single actor - they were excellent. It was easy to forget they were acting in a movie - just watching the story.
In the early days, there were ranch wars, over sheep and big money men who wanted to own and develop the entire range in Montana for the wealth and power, which they never had enough of, and they paid to get rough guys to help them force out ranchers and their land.
The story line is fascinating, to see how the expanse of electricity, cars, gas stoves etc, spread into the cities, how the ruthless, cold blooded murders would do ANY thing to get their way. Harrison Ford, head of the ranch gets nearly murdered by several gunshots from merenary raiders, but barely survives. His wife, played by a very famous actress herself, asks her military retired son to come back to Yellowstone, from S. Africa. where he lives with his beautiful girlfriend - their journey back to Yellowstone is DRAMATIC.
I LOVE the story, I love fast forwarding through the commercials.
Caveat - the shows violence is, at times, overwhelming - my Wonderful Cute Wife won't watch it. The violence is a bit much. Not just shootings etc, but......... let's just say you wouldn't want to be an American Indian young woman in a religious sick cult.
I never cared for Beth Dutton on the other show, just to over the edge vicious and nasty. Didn't seem real, and her slimey brother, nearly the same.
I love the show, but the violence is extreme for some folks, and it didn't add to the story, imho.
I'd give it a B+ anyways.

Season 2 just concluded about a week ago. I watched the whole dang thing over a period of about 2 weeks and really enjoyed it.
It’s a little odd from a plot structure as the show focuses on 3 separate plot lines. One is of course in Montana where Jake Dutton is the patriarch, played by Harrison Ford, and his wife Cara played by Helen Mirren.
The second plot line features Spencer Dutton, played by Brandon Sklenar, and he’s the nephew of Jake and Cara, and when the show starts in 1923 he’s a WW1 vet working as a Hunter in Africa. Africa was still under the control of a lot of European countries at the time (along with many other eastern nations) so there were resorts for wealthy Europeans set up to experience the wilds of Africa and Spencer had steady work keeping them safe from Lions and such.
The third plot line features Teonna Rainwater, played by Aminah Nieves, and she is presumably an ancestor of Thomas Rainwater, an important character in the show Yellowstone. As the series progresses Teonna goes on her own wild journey, but an interesting thing about the show is her journey never intersects with the other 2 plot lines.
As Cal noted the show does a good job with the historical aspects of what was going on at the time in the country and in Montana. More and more people were starting to drive cars, cities were getting electricity, prohibition was happening as well as the Great Depression. Montana is depicted as a much more brutal place than it was is Yellowstone.
The story line with Spencer was my favorite of the show. He falls in love with a British socialite while in Africa and they’re super cute together.
Harrison Ford was ok as the Dutton patriarch in the show, but his wife Cara is portrayed as the stronger character.
The show wasn’t quite as riveting as Yellowstone but it definitely had its tense moments. I did enjoy it.
I’ll give it a solid A.

Wonder if they will continue with Spencer Dutton's journey?!

They would almost have to if they want to keep milking the Yellowstone franchise for more shows. They already did 1883, which l haven’t seen yet. 40 years later is 1923, so if they stick with that formula it would be 1963? Spencer would be Harrison Ford old by then, so it would likely be his son John as a prominent character, who l think is the grandfather of Costner’s character in Yellowstone.
