Shedeur Sanders

The Browns Board

  • First off, this screams Haslam forcing the pick. If you read between the lines of Berry at the press conference and the shot of them in the war room- doesn’t seem like a united front.

to be honest though, I’ve half jokingly / half seriously said the Browns should load up on QB and just let them totally duke it out for top billing. If you consider Flacco to be the vet backup on the roster, why not let three hungry dudes battle at see who rises to the top? We’ve tried literally every other way at this point, so I don’t hate it.

Yes it does scream Haslem meddling...but Haslem was in that shot in the war room and he didn't look overjoyed either.  I might have thought he'd have a big ol' grin on if it was his call.  DePo didn't look pouty or anything though.  Still, it screams Haslem.

I noticed pretty low intensity after most of the picks.  This was a no brainer in round 5

I thought they were more animated on earlier picks.  And yes, it's a no brainer in round 5, but remember, we had to give up the rest of our draft capitol to move up in round 5, ahead of the Eagles, to get him.  (it took our 5th and 6th round picks, essentially costing us whomever we would've drafted in round 6)

Seems odd to take 2 QBs and if we're all in Sanders corner now, why did we chance him dropping if we liked him so much?

Meanwhile we're still hoping for a qb from next years class.

I liked this draft all except for the double qb picks.

I didn’t think we would take him at 33 or 36 because we passed on him essentially at 2 and 5.  But maybe we’re lukewarm about him enough that once needs were fulfilled (well some of them) we took a shot at the end of our draft.  This might be wishful thinking.

The other side of it maybe Andrew Berry wanted to pass on this 2025 QB class. You still need a developmental guy even with Pickett who is on his third team.  Bring in a guy with intangibles and experience that can maybe overcome physical limitations.   But I think Haslem wanted Shedur and the compromise with coaches and GM was make him compete and see what he has - if Shedur doesn’t rise it’s…see we told you.

There is a fine line between arrogance and confidence some of the best leaders can get fooled.  If it is Arrogance with Shedur he will get left behind.

I think they didn’t have enough confidence in this QB group outside of Cam Ward, so unless that happened the backup plan was a shotgun approach.

I think, for whatever reason, Dillon Gabriel was their top choice mid-round guy that they wanted to invest in and they were not going to let him get away, hence the highish pick.

And after that l figure the plan was to see who might drop and play the udfa game but when they saw Sanders drop to the 5th round they scrambled the jets.

It’s fair to wonder how much homework the Browns did on Sanders? Certainly enough to know he was’t a top pick guy for them, but if we’re going shotgun approach anyway then why not?

And he only costs $4.6 mil over 4 years. Chump change for a QB.\

Is that 5th round pick money these days? I didn’t know that.

And I think our 3rd round QB gets something like $6.2mil over 4 years.

  • If you'd told me on Tuesday that the Browns would get all of Mason Graham, Shedeur, Carson Schwesinger, Q, and Dylan Sampson during this draft, I'd not only give that haul an A+ I'd say your optimism is a bit uncomfortable to be around.  And at the end of it we also walked away with the TE and an extra first next year.

  • @calfoxwc said:

I'm amazed that they haven't drafted an offensive lineman.

Yes.  That's unfortunate.  UFA's will be coming in soon enough.

    @kvoethe said:

@144 he was definately worth a flyer ...

Yeah, but it took the rest of our draft picks to get there.

I'm grading A+ on the draft but can we once avoid the drama and spotlight that comes with our team.  Now the sanders spotlightbegins...manziel, watson, garrett...now sanders....does any other team have this much drama every season??

Maybe being a 5th rounder will let the spotlight shine elsewhere for a change.

And the way I look at the extra QB instead of a better 3rd rounder and loss of other late rounders is this.

    1. We would not have a quality DT Like MG

    2. We would not have two 1st rounders next year

    3. We would not have had 2 high 2nd rounders this year

So to me it was well worth not taking Sanders #2 overall and it was worth the chump change to move up in the 5th to get what should have been a 1st round QB. My only regret in this draft is not addressing OLs better.

  • My issue with Sanders isn’t his physical attributes, it lies between his ears.

I think daddy played a big role in his mental development…or lack there of.

I believe the Browns said they wanted “an adult” in the locker room when they dumped Mayfield. ?

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

  • AxeA Axe

I'll say it again, Shedeur is taking a massive pay cut moving from the Buffalos to the Browns 😁

? He probably out-earned me when he was just getting an allowance from his dad and I like to think I made decent cake...

I'm torn on this Sanders situation.

I've said before, he's a guy a lot of people thought was a first round talent who we got at #144. On paper, that sounds like a brilliant move.

But as a Browns fan who was exhausted dealing with the Watson nonsense after dealing with the Baker nonsense, I was looking forward to a no-nonsense QB room. Finally, right? I also have been on record for months saying that the Browns should avoid Shedeur like the plague, trade down and pick up assets for the 2026 Draft and get your franchise QB then. Use a mid-rounder this draft on a young guy who fits the system who can be your long term backup QB.

AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT THE BROWNS DID.

And then they went and brought Sanders in anyways. I get it, its a lottery ticket. If he's a problem, you cut him. But the Sanders circus is coming to town, and my absolute nightmare scenario is that he shows just enough next season to make the team think "Holy shit, I think we just hit the lottery!" and skip on getting a QB next year when the QB class is better and you are sitting on two probably top 15 first round picks. Hell, would anyone be shocked if both were top 10?

From the sounds of it, Sanders would have something along the lines of a 4 year/$4.5 mill contract?

Rumor is that Carson Beck, formerly of the U of Georgia, will now QB for the Miami Hurricanes this coming college season for a cool $4.3 mill.

Him becoming a 5th round pick will fix that, if it doesn't little loss in dumping a 5th round pick.

I agree but I think it's a risk worth taking given where he was drafted.

  • Just sharing an observation l heard on a sports radio program this morning. The observation was that Sanders had only been coached by his dad since he was in pop warner. I’m not sure l realized that, but it begs the question how will he respond when he has to deal with different coaches who likely have different coaching styles?

At some point... Daddy has to "let go"

Seems odd to take 2 QBs and if we're all in Sanders corner now, why did we chance him dropping if we liked him so much?

Meanwhile we're still hoping for a qb from next years class.

I liked this draft all except for the double qb picks.

I would rather have too many competent QBs over none. If we have a clear cut franchise QB, just trade away the other one to a QB needy team.
Drafting just 1 QB in a draft, or spending a high pick on one has not worked.
Letting him slide to the 5th mitigates the risk..

I saw an interview where he said close to "We don't care who hates us. You know who my dad is? We just don't care, man"

I think growing up a LOT will be great for him, but I think the damage to his personality may never be overcome.
