Shedeur Sanders

Not perfectly in stride...but out there a long way. The media is certainly taking off and running with Zac Jackson's observation that Sanders is good and Gabriel is not.
I'll be excited to get to training camp this year. Now that I've settled into the new job, I've built schedule flexibility.
Plus we're working on getting media credentials. Hopefully this time next year I'll have access to OTAs. And I'll be able to deliver this information, that other media types are, minus the bullshit and from a first-hand account.

I look forward to that tia.

Speaking of Browns QBs, guess where former Browns QB JFF will be this coming season. He has been hired to be the HC at Liberty Hill HS about 10 miles from where I live N of Austin. It has been a fairly successful HS going 3 to 6 games deep in state playoff at least 5 years in a row in 5-2A, relatively large HS but not one of the superbig ones like you get in Dallas and Houston 6-A schools.

"Hey coach, can you explain the playbook to me?"
Yeah, the O's are offensive guys and the X's live in Texas.

...is he even qualified to be the 5th grade flag football coach?
My 5th grader grandson caught 3 TD's this past Sunday in his game! - I was soo happy for him. The season is almost over and he hadn't scored a TD.

“Just how to get through the reads quicker and those type of things. And I asked him, ‘Hey, let me know what you think, like, what I need to do.’ So it’s like, he’s seen it, he’s played it, and like he’s a pro, you know. I would be a fool to not get insight from somebody that had success over all the years that he had.” Sanders said, per The Chronicle-Telegram’s Scott Petrak.
-------
The smartest thing Sanders could do right now would be to do what he's doing...pick Flacco's brain. Be his shadow. ( apparently, Sanders ain't no fool )
-
Sanders is really impressing so far. We watched Colorado play a lot, now the jump to the NFL is said to be a huge jump -
and Sanders and Gabriel have the fire to make it a lot of fun to watch it all play out.
-
I expected Sanders to do well 7-on-7 with time to process. The issue last year was taking too many sacks and too many “backyard ball” moments where he’s running around avoiding Slower defensive lineman and backers. He was getting a pass for a bad offensive line but I saw a lot of issues created by his undisciplined play. He will not avoid those guys in the Fall and he will need to process faster and let’s see if the accuracy holds when that happensz

FWIW, out of 134 teams - here's a cut and paste (below) on how well the running game did to take the pressure off their passer. I didn't watch any Colorado games last year like you did so I appreciate your insights and observations. I DID watch quite of their matchups in 2023 and saw many of the things you spoke of. There were occasions when he dropped back and turned into Jerome Ford taking what should have been a short loss and turning it into a 30 yard loss. The matchup with Oregon that year went from ugly to FUGLY in a hurry.
All that said, it's all going to boil down to how he prepares himself in tandem with what the Offensive Coaching staff wants from him. It's gonna be all about pre-snap intellect cohesion with speed reading the progressions. I don't question his hand-eye coordination because I really like knowing that great vision sets up great reflexes/reactions from even the dumb jock QBs like Brett Favre, Terry Bradshaw, Dan Marino (nobody had a quicker release), and even the most overrated QB Joe Namath. When Brett Favre was on his 2nd team and he had to ask Ty Detmer "Ty what the Hell is the Nickel that Coach keeps talking about?" That ain't the brightest apple in the orchard. Good vision often leads to good reaction/reflexes. Like Manning, Favre learned the hard way with throws he could get away with in college not being advisable at the NFL level. Those showed up as INTs.
Brady Quinn, on the other hand, was a very SMART QB with piss poor vision. Just because former NFL OC/Super Bowl Champion Charlie Weiss was his HC; that didn't make him the most pro ready QB that many self proclaimed draft analysts kept calling him on TV. As helpful as WR Jeff Samardzija was to Quinn at 6-4/6-5 - locking onto 1 target so frequently turned into a bad habit he perfected at the college level. When he got to the NFL, he wasn't very good at all speed reading the progressions. Apparently, he wasn't well trained at the Pre-Snap look of the formation either. That's the power button of the QB's processor. If you don't turn that on - you're not gonna be expediting the progression reads. I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. All that to say, I saw what you saw but I think a lot of that stuff can be corrected as we head toward the "we shall see..."

Colorado's starting RB was Dallan Hayden, who transferred out of Ohio State. Hayden isn't great at passpro but has great vision. Their OL last season wasn't very good but had a couple of decent players.

FWIW, they also have former NFL RB Marshall Faulk on their offensive staff who actually exceeded 1000 yards rushing and 1000 yards receiving in the same season 1 year and had quite an impressive career as a wealth of knowledge. Aside from his God-givens, rumor had it one of his biggest strengths was preparation. He's probably going to be a great guy to learn from as Colorado's rebuild enters years 3-5.
The reason I brought up where they ranked running the ball - is having the threat of a running game can help a QB out considerably in the passing game. When attacks aren't balanced, defenses can stay in pin their ears back mode with zero threat of getting stung. How can play-action fakes work if you're offense is bad at running the football? The recruiting ahead should improve all this. They pretty much came into a schedule with Oregon on it in 2023 as soon as they departed from level of competition that Jackson State played; so some growing pains were inevitable. That put a lot of extra pressure on Sanders that he must have handled pretty good if he was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2024. It'll be interesting to see what OC Tommy Rees can set up for him. Under Rees as his QB Coach & OC, Jalen Milroe had his best year passing with 23 TDs to just 6 INTs. The very next year without Rees, that turned into only 16 TD passes to 11 INTs.
My hope is that this team has a nice running game for a young QB to lean on like Bernie Kosar had as a rookie when both Mack and Byner rushed for over 1000 yards apiece in 1985. The Browns went 8-8 that year; but that was good enough for a 1st place finish for them in the AFC Central. Bernie's 1st start was week 7 that season. Looking to this year, that might not be a bad plan to follow seeing how the Browns drafted 2 promising RBs while they have Flacco or Pickett to be the equivalent of what Gary Danielson was to begin the year as the starter.
Should be interesting. Let's hope it's a good kind of interesting...

Shedeur has been a pleasant surprise. I expected more drama. I expected to hear "Coach Prime" quotes on a daily basis. I expected Shedeur to abrasive in some way, shape or form -- nuthin'. It's like a switch was flipped right after the slide. The card was turned in and the kid knew it was time to put his head down and work.
While that does nothing to predict his future success, it's been a pleasant surprise. I honestly thought we had "browned" ourselves into another side-show. -

Shedeur Sanders ticketed for driving 101 mph in a 60 mph zone

I just read where Sanders got stopped for speeding at 12:45am yesterday. Was doing 101 mph in a 60.
Hopefully that's the biggest team headline of the summer. However, C'mon Shedeur. You've gotta keep it somewhere around the speed limit. I have a Corvette. It can go really fast. But ya can't go really fast on public roads. It's just not the right thing to do. ( of course I had the vette over 100 once. was just settling into a 'groove'. that's when I backed it back down ).

Well I went 110 mph on my Honda VFR 800 a few years back when a pickup decided he didn't like me trying to pass and sped up to try to run me into oncoming traffic. He had no idea I could kick it into 4th and pass him in less than 2 seconds. LOL! Of course that was just a self preservation move on my part at age 64.?

I read an article today Sanders stopped for speeding in Strongsville and my first thought was - You can’t go 71 in a 65 in an Ohio.
And then 101. You can’t do that in TX or CA either.

They have some young talent on their line…Seaton for example will be at least a second day draft pick when all is said and done.
But point taken with their run game.
When he didn’t have free rushers coming at him. I saw a lot of holding the ball waiting for his big play guy to get open and taking some unnecessary sacks or evading 4.95 40 DL. Mixed in with some bubble screens and quick hitters of course too.
