Good article Bob - thanks!  It'll be a nice opportunity for him to expand his value to the team.   All the way back to Calvin Hill and way further on before that - RBs have frequently been helpful here catching the ball on 3rd down.

No problem. Funny thing is I immediately thought of Calvin Hill & Greg Pruitt while reading it.

We will miss Chubb of course, but maybe these young backs can make plays. Throw in Njoku & Fannin, hey, we might have an offense ( O Line is the key).

Believe it or not, my avatar is Greg Pruitt. Thought I'd go get these stats as we talk about the RB position today and the multiple roles they can provide.  YES, we're in a passing era today but RBs have always been used in the slot; or as a wingback; or as a flanker; or in pass pro. IMO, they're REALLY underpaid. I'm gonna post some stats from a Hall of Fame player that was very well liked and respected by the 2 fanbases he played in front of. If it wasn't for the greatness of Jim Brown - there's no telling what Bobby Mitchell would have been able to do with more carries.  Then again, what he did catching the ball has him in the Hall of Fame so this role isn't as new or exclusive to the here and now as a lot of columnists out there want us to think it is.

Mitchell was the perfect complement to Brown.

Never quite understood why the Browns wanted to get rid of him for Ernie Davis, who I would think was more like Brown.

He sure was!  He must have been a lot of fun to watch back in the day.

Davis caught an 87 yard TD pass the year Syracuse won the Natty and he also rushed for a TD that day. 2 years later, he won the Heisman Trophy.  There's no telling how good he could have been if he didn't get diagnosed with Leukemia. In the movie "The Express"  SU Head Coach "Schwartzwalder" played by Dennis Quaid - somehow pulled off getting Jim Brown to play a big role in recruiting Ernie Davis despite Brown's initial reluctance to do so.  I don't know who reeled in who to make that happen - but it sure looked like Brown ended up happy he helped get Davis there.

Regarding Ford...I see him as a backup.  He'll go in to spell Judkins.  He'll also backup Sampson as the pass catching back.  He'll take on either one's role if they get dinged or injured.

I'm also interested in seeing the big kid, Marshall.

My guess is the Browns feel the same way or they wouldn't have drafted 2 RBs.

Having said that, Ford isn't nearly as bad as people make him out to be.  These are Ford's 2024 stats below; and you'll see he averaged 5.4 yards per carry.  He didn't score a lot of TDs; but I'll take something like that from him as the 3rd RB on the depth chart.

Yeah, his numbers look pretty good.  And he does posses speed.  He just seems to have poor vision behind the LOS and picks the wrong lane too many times.  But he's handy to have around (at the right price) as he can be out there on 1st, 2nd and/or 3rd down.

You know better than that.   Ford is exactly the type of RB problem teams hate having.

If you hand it to him, he's OK enough to take it.    If you don't, he isn't good enough to read it.

I tend to agree, we will soon find out. The national media is going to continue to be negative on the Browns until they dig out of the mess.

    I'm expecting somewhere around a .500 season.
