Flaccomania part 2, Electric Boogaloo

The Browns Board
29 13 463 1
  • Joe has been named the starter. I don’t think any of us are surprised, but in my heart of hearts l kinda hope he locks it down and makes it tough for the team to bench him.

Flacco throws some real pretty passes and l’m looking forward to seeing more of that this year.

  • It's the right call.. SB champion with experience and knows how to win... Sanders and Gabriel will have their day.. Even Pickett... I think they are all talented with their particular skill sets.. If Jimmy stops meddling... I think the Browns future could be bright.. Time will tell..

  • Flacco is a perfect match for stefanski offense, just his age is the only question these days.

Either way it’ll be fun to have the guy who can sling it down field.

I think Sanders could be an interesting match for Stefanski’s offense too. I just don’t want to rush him.

  • I appreciate a good Always Sunny reference.

Apparently, you like Sanders more than I ever gave you credit for.

After watching both Sanders & Gabriel, I think that Gabriel is the better fit for what Stef wants in a QB.  Analogy:  Sanders kind of wound up on his doorstep in the pouring rain, with nowhere to go, asking...Can I please come in?

I don't want to call Stef a Don Shula....but LIKE a Don Shula, I think Stef can coach and pull success from just about any type of QB.  I think that he's demonstrated that in his time with us.  I mean, in one season there, he went from Deshaun Watson style offense, all the way to the other end of the spectrum to a Flacco type offense, and everywhere in between with the bottom feeder QB's he had to use in the time between Watson & Flacco.  And he won some games with those bottom feeders.  That season truly was a testament to coaching.

  • I agree.

I think Stefanski pounded the table for Garbriel and cringed when we selected Sanders.

  • I appreciate a good Always Sunny reference.

Electric Boogaloo? That’s a movie reference. “Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo” from 1984.

Arguably the best breakdancing movie everrr. It’s sorta like West Side Story and the dance fighting scenes are amazing because everybody’s breakdancing. It features a young Ice T at the end.

He didn’t exactly have much success with the Watson style offense. But not exactly like DTR or Watson had the capability for it.

Large success with the west coast timing style though and Flacco. That style is a little rare in the NFL these days though.

I think when stefanski had Watson and DTR to work with there was truly nothing he could have done though. Him making PJ Walker look competent at times was impressive though.

But I think they stole it from Cajun detective writer James Lee Burke: In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead and The Lost Get Back Boogie. Although the 2nd was published after the movie. Some really excellent writing BTW which really brings the Cajun Country of Lousyanna to life.

I had no interest taking him #2 overall.

Taking a flyer on him with a 5th round pick, and in the process pick up another first rounder by moving down?

Absolutely. I just wish the Browns would have taken an OLineman with the 3rd round pick instead of Gabriel.

Right.  The back of my mind thinks that the Haslam & DePo team wanted the flashier style offense.  Perhaps under the guise of analytics driven football.  And if Stef wanted to remain being the HC then he was going to have to march to that drum beat.  Of course, he had to throw most of that playbook, along with a lot of analytics driven principals into the trash once Watson hurt himself and he was stuck with the likes of PJ Walker & DTR.  Haslam likes flashy things.

I always harken back to Depo saying on camera, We're not interested in 4 yard runs.  We want 13 yard passes.

  • Here's hoping the Browns stomp Cincy in the opener, and go from there. Flacco should help stabilize things at the onset, just stay healthy.

The national pundits are wrong. The Browns are a decent football team.

Please prove me right, I don't think I can handle another draft thread in October.

This feeling is starting to grow on me as well. So I'll be the (womp, womp) Debbie Downer here....

If he's the man, I want him to step up and show us.

I don't want him to leave any doubt that he is or he is not. I'm sick of talking draft, it consumes about 9 months of our discussions here, but I also don't want to miss out on the 2026 QB Draft Class if he is not.

Maybe...but at the end of the day, we have him.  And he's shown a decent half of football.  And he's a QB.  As we wind on down the road, someone's going to be wanting a QB.  If he can get in the game against the Rams and play decently again, what does that do for his trade value during the season?   I mean, they'll have had/seen him all offseason, TC and preseason.  Maybe, they've seen (and heard) enough of him to know that they'd consider trading him away for the right offer.  And with a little more decent film on him we could request substantially higher than his 5th round pick status.

More likely, however, a team would be in REAL need of a QB to start and it would be Pickett that they'd want.

I can't wait for the timeline where Flacco comes in week one, lights up the Bengals, we all get Flacco fever and immediately get regressed to the mean haha. In all seriousness, I really think week one could start as a win. Home game against an infamously slow starting team and a veteran QB against a terrible defense has all the makings of an upset.

I'm totally fine with this, though. Let Joe navigate an otherwise tough start of the season, continue to let Gabriel/Sanders battle it out behind the scenes and in the likely event of a regress to the mean put the best man in.

They can talk about having 4 QBs all they want, I cannot imagine that actually happening. Pickett will absolutely have a market as a post-cut backup somewhere, a la Josh Dobbs a few years back. The Cowboys QB room for example looks dreadful after Dak (Milton looked God awful last week). I'm confident they could get a pick somewhat relative to the 5th they spent.

I can imagine it for you:

They traded for and signed their starting & backup QB's before the draft.  Flacco & Pickett

The plan was to draft their developmental QB in the 'Developmental QB Talent Level' draft.....knowing that you probably wouldn't want him seeing the field

And so here we are.  All set.  We've got all three.  Starter, Backup & Developmental.  It's just that the Developmental guy brought a friend.  And they're both doing well enough that you're not letting either of them go.

  •  Week 3 will likely be the dress rehearsal for the offense.  So it's my hope that Sanders and Gabriel get a quarter of work each afterwards with the 2s and 3s in an even distribution of personnel time.

Both Sanders and Gabriel had their struggles, although for different reasons.  I also couldn't help but notice the differences in play calls between both QBs, formations, pre-snap structure and post snap structure.

I'd like to see Sanders get some of the looks Gabriel got and vice versa.  Will go a long way towards evaluating them.

I suspect Pickett will be unloaded. Him not playing in any preseason game(they said today he wont play Saturday) should really mean we get rid of him. He isn't doing anything at this point.
