Russia and Ukraine August 2025

Political Discussion

  • Six months ago, Zelensky derailed an Oval Office meeting with Trump that was supposed to be about peace talks. In the time since then, Russia has continued to make slow advances, and likely thousands of troops on both sides have been killed.

Per Gallup, the Ukrainian desire to continue the war has collapsed in 2025.

Surprisingly, American support for US troops in Ukraine has increased recently but remains low.

Against this backdrop, President Trump has met with Putin last week, and this week he hosted Zelensky and European leaders.

Putin is continuing to demand Ukraine cede Donetsk and Luhansk and freezing the lines in Zaporihzhzia and Kherson.

In contrast to the first meeting with Zelensky, this one seems to have gone well. Trump proposed British, German, and French peacekeeping forces to be stationed in Ukraine and that American troops will not be a part of that. Zelensky, back in February, was demanding that Russia withdraw from Ukraine and cede Crimea. This was not a realistic outcome, and Zelensky seems to have accepted that he will have to cede some territory.

As of this morning, reports are saying that he will not cede any territory that Russia has not captured. Russia has intensified drone and missile attacks overnight and launched their largest salvo of the month.

This is the closest we've been to a peace settlement. Hopefully, both sides will meet. They're discussing having this meeting in Rome or Geneva.

I know Pres Trump is playing nice with putin and a few others, because the old saying goes "you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar"....

but it concerns me - putin/russians are cold blooded evil. The soviet union/russian wars are historically shocking in number.

scroll way, way down to just "Russian Federation (1991–present)"

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_Russia

Russia's "economic system" is based on gov energy sales and war.

The solution to the Ukraine - is European forces on the ground, and American air power very nearby. Maybe Poland, Hungary...or Romania.

The Ukraine, and Moldova, are buffers to separate russia from Europe. And the russians OWN Moldova. If they could own the Ukraine - they can start skirmishes etc with the rest of near by Europe. and russians have already been threatening a lot of other nations.

So, I don't picture much of a solution forthcoming, Pres Trump and European allies' efforts to be admired, but putin and the russians mean business in going back to something like the old soviet union, and they are not kidding. Putin wants NO security guarantees and the Ukraine to be demilitarized, NO NATO membership.

The sickening violence done to civilians deliberately is on going. Thousands of Ukraine children kidnapped and taken to back to russia as hostages.

Russia won't stop. They may pretend to, but will work to get a weasel back into the WH, etc, so they can freely start expanding all over again.

The only way to have gotten russia to back the heck off for now, is with killer sanctions, and even then, putin is age old kgb - just cold blooded. Their system is a failure, and only by expanding in geography, warring, threatening and intimidating - can they keep on surviving.

I would love for it to be over, but look at the vicious wars and forced control russia has perpetrated.

Even as the soviet union, they did not do well, taking wealth from other countries as they wanted. That is why Holodomor happened.

If Pres Trump can pull it off legitmately, it will be profounding amazing. But I keep remembering the old story ending "you knew I was a snake before you gave me a ride across the pond" after promising not to bite the good samaritan.

Russia's manpower advantage is a scary thought for Europe, but Russian logistics are absolute ass. They don't have the manpower to secure and hold the rest of Europe (or even Poland). They couldn't even push to the Dnieper in Ukraine. Russia triggering NATO Article 5 would be suicidally retarded.

Probably true, but starting the war was also stupid, letting russian troops go into the Ukraine and rape, murder, torture and kidnapp Ukraine kids...was also sick and twisted. Russia has already sent drones very close to and into NATO countries. Russia is desperate.
