I'm excited for week 1. I think we got a chance at beating the bengals.

Well said! Let's hope Tommy Rees is this generations Lindy infante. The tandem of Infante & Kosar was my favorite. Infante knew defenses would be chomping at the bits to blitz our cerebral but cement shoe'd QB. His solution was to dictate the gridiron chess match going after LBer Corps in the division. He'd go with multiple receiver sets and 1 back. If he used 2 RBs - he'd slot, flank or wing little known RB Herman Fontenot who ended up with 47 receptions (24 of them became 1st downs and 1 was a TD) in that 12 win season in 86. That was almost exclusively on 3rd downs except the 3 games he started (which always meant Brian Brennan time). Brennan actually led this team in receptions with 55 that same year (47 of those became 1st downs & 6 more were TDs). These 2 guys went after after the hook zones, flats and and all gray area between zones. Brennan had the testicularistics to catch the ball over the middle. With Kosar's accuracy and Infante's game plans - Brennan & Fontenot buried the blitz. Think about it - the 2 situational players quietly combined for 102 receptions. Byner also caught 37 passes, Mack caught 28 while Curtis Dickey added 10 more receptions just messing with blitzes in a very cerebral ball control offense. Believe it or not? Bernie only had 17 TD passes in that season; but anyone that watched him play understood why we thought he was awesome; especially considering it was only his 2nd season. I'll share the stats on offense below.
Infante also liked to manipulate the Safeties with HOF TE Ozzie Newsome while Webster Slaughter was the deep threat on the perimeter that teamed up with the 6'2" Reggie Langhorne. He liked to spread defenses horizontally to set-up the opportunities to go vertical.
Nice post. Loved Lindy Infante.
Question for everybody....back in the 80s/90s that deadly slant pass, about 7-10 yards from the LOS was basically unstoppable, lots of teams used it. Kosar was among the best to throw it.
What happened to that play, where did it go? It's rarely run anymore.

I’m hardly football savvy enough to answer, but that sounds like an element of the West Coast Offense and it really started getting hot around that time.
My guess is defenses adjusted. More zone coverage? Floating linebackers? Adaptive corner play?

The Combination of Sipe,Shofner and Rutigliano wasn't bad either.. Having said that.. I can't believe coach Sam is still alive and living in Waite Hil.. I used to live not far from Sam and Art. Drove by their houses many times when I was young.. It was less than 10 minutes away from ours.. While i'm interested in what Sanders/Gabriel will bring in the future.. I really like the way Flacco runs Stefanski's system.. Hes efficient and rhythmic in it.. If we get the Good Joe that we like. it could be a fun season offensively.. But.. I have 4 questions/concerns.. One.. Running back to protect the passer.. We need to get something from one of these kids to keep the defense honest or their just going to stack 8 in the box all day long... My second concern is Dawand Jones.. While he looks fit and trim.. I saw a couple of outside defenders zip right around him in the two previous preseason games... He better clean that shit up pronto.. Id much rather see Jones at RT but for now will give benefit of the doubt.. Thirdly... The defensive secondary.. Losing Emerson is costly and Greg Newsome needs to have a career year.. ST's... For me... Time is running out on Bubba Ventrone and Dustin Hopkins.. Since Bubba has been here.. other than Hopkins one solid season here... I haven't seen much difference than what Mike Priefer put out while he was here except a couple of different wrinkles here and there... Until further evidence says otherwise.. I see a 5-6 win season.. I hope I'm wrong.. Because this team is not devoid of talent.

Yes, the 1st group of Kardiac Kids led by Sipe were well coached as well.

As we march towards the season opener let me drop this little nugget about the opponent…
Apparently word got out that the Bengals only will give their Ring Of Honor inductees two game tickets when they come in for the presentation, and make the inductees pay for their own airfare to get there and there own hotel room to stay in. What a cheapskate fucking franchise.

That was a topic on local sports talk radio this week round these parts. Mike Brown is pretty well known as a cheapskate. It was kind of surprising he dug deep to extend Tee Higgins this offseason, but not so surprising he can’t muster the funds to extend Hendrickson, and now this thing.
Boomer Esiason was giving him hell for it on one broadcast l listened to.
