Ford averaged well over 5 yards a carry last season.

A 66 and 62 yard run in the closing weeks of the season allows this YPC to not be as bad as it was.

Prior to that, 3 of his 4 longest runs were against 3 of the 5 worst defenses on schedule.  Sandwiching those was a 4 of 5 game stretch where his longest carry didn't exceed 9 yards.

Fords inefficient running style allowed teams (as early as the Dallas game) to get away with playing more 2 high safeties or spinning one weak to the run fit because he couldn't consistently punish defenses for it.

If not for two busted runs on situations defenses over played their hand on obvious situations, and using the mean, he's a sub 4ypc back.

I don't think he's a great RB, or even one I want starting for the Browns. I'm well aware he refuses to put his head down and get the 2 yards given to him, and will turn it into a 2 yard loss because he just dances trying to hit a homerun.

But the "FoRD iS ThE woRsT RB eVeR" talk on here is a bit ridiculous.

We could dissect Barry Sanders career and his YPC would drop like a brick if you play the "Well if we take his long runs away" game.

That isn't the game im playing. Barry succeeded in spite of his Oline. Ford has taken multiple runs for efficient gains to help keep the offense on schedule or produce explosive running plays and has single handedly turned them into TFL, tackles for no gain or minimal gain.

He helps create a defensive +1 without the extra body.  The YPC is artificially inflated because of good fortune.

Is he the worst ever? No.

Is he the worst of all the backs the Browns used this pre-season? Yes.

There’s a name l haven’t heard for a while. Wasn’t he a Christian Science guy? I vaguely recall he got injured pretty early on in his Browns career and it was a big deal that he accepted some western medicine procedure to get healthy.

Remember when Jamaal Lewis ran for 260+ against the Browns in the early 2000s?

Butch Davis said something like " if you take his 3 long runs away, we held him in check." ??

I hope Marshall at least gets to the PS. Ford is useless. Big mistake retaining him. And I'm assuming they will finally sign Judkins.

Ford averaged well over 5 yards a carry last season.

If Ford was even mediocre in some of your eyes he'd average like 8 yards a carry. ?

He's  pretty fast.  On the rare occasion that there's a hole where it's supposed to be and he gets though it clean he can run for a while before they catch him.  But if he's got to pick a different path and use vision, well, it seems like he wears horse blinders.  But if you can get him in space, he can run pretty fast.  (and he can catch)

Damn, I spent that whole game hoping an alarm clock would wake me up to learn the game hasn't started yet.  Guess what never happened?

In that 2003 season where Lewis rushed for 2066 yards - 500 of those yards came against the Browns (without him playing in the 4th quarter either time). Philosophically speaking, the guy had somewhat of a slump the other 14 games.

And there it is in a nutshell. Worst vision I have ever seen in any pro back. That makes him useless.

Aggies, it's the most underrated intangible in football.  Guys can be smart at the chalkboard but when they get on the field needing to apply it at the SPEED of the game - their LACK of vision makes them look stupid.  That's why when we bring up pre-snap intellect, it facilitates good vision in tandem with a quick processer.  If you can't throw to a receiver in synch with when he's breaking open - you're too late to be accurate.  Those QB football sins that college football doesn't often punish...

As for Ford, the guy who likes/liked him is Stefanski while anyone that can average 5.4 yard per carry isn't doing it all by accident no matter how popular that theory is. Nick Chubb averaged 3.3 yards per carry the same season (last year) with the same teammates; so it wasn't all exclusively because of Ford's weaknesses.    All that said, when you draft 2 RBs in 1 draft - that wasn't done by accident either.  There was a bigger chorus with a higher volume in Stefanski's ear.  And now 1 of them is waiting on Roger Goodell's pardon.  Since it's the Browns, you know that ain't getting prioritized any time soon.

  •  Just saw that Mikey Hall passed his physical.  With Adin making the team, wasn't long before Sam Kamara had his contract terminated shortly after.

That's a bad beat, he was playing really well throughout pre-season.  But I get it - you'd be stocking the Dline with three 4 techniques between Graham, Adidas, Kamara and Hall possibly returning.

Hoping he clears to our practice squad. God forbid we see injuries, he provides immediate quality depth if elevated to the roster.

  • The Browns claimed Raheim Sanders off waivers from the Chargers. Sanders is a guy we really liked during the pre-draft process.

    College: South Carolina
    Size: 6’0” 215 (23 yo)

In 2024, Sanders had 183 carries for 881 yards and 11 TDs.

In 2023 at Arkansas, Sanders dealt with knee and shoulder injuries. But in 2022, he went off with 222 carries for 1,443 yards and 10 TDs.

Also, the fact the Browns did not trade for a running back or claim a young veteran like Audric Estime tells me a Quinshon Judkins deal could be close.

Much easier to slide Sanders to your practice squad than it would be for a guy like Estime.

    Just my opinion.

Browns make two roster claims and announce nine practice squad signings

Sanders is an undrafted free agent rookie out of Arkansas and South Carolina from the Chargers. Los Angeles used a first-round pick on Omarion Hampton and signed Najee Harris, so making the 53-man roster was always going to be an uphill battle.

The rookie back was limited to just six games in 2023 with a knee injury, but he totaled 1,714 scrimmage yards with 12 touchdowns on Arkansas in 2022, and had another 1,197 scrimmage yards with 13 touchdowns on South Carolina this past year. Sanders is said to have strong vision and good size, but he's occasionally inconsistent with how powerful he runs. He adds needed power to this running back room without Quinshon Judkins, but isn't likely to see a significant role early on.

  • In addition to Sanders the other picked up on waivers was CB Jarrick Bernard-Converse from the Jets.

PS- players including my fav RB Marshal and tia's DT Kamara.

Also WR Davis, TE Cannella, S Edmonds, DT Holly, CB James, DE Okwara and of course my Aggie RB Trayveon Williams

Waived were TE Bates and CB Dom Jones

True, except Huntley was privy to our playbook for this season.  And now he's on the Rats.

I think most of us saw some good things from these guy so I'm glad to see the Browns brought them back.
