My memory is a little foggy, but I think this was Kevin Mack's return to the team after getting nailed for trying to buy cocaine during the season.

He ran like a man possessed at the end of the game and his touchdown sealed the deal. I think Clay Matthews did something really dumb just before it (lateralled a fumble or interception that Houston recovered?)

I wish I was that sharp.

Yes, Clay Matthews scooped uo a bad snap and tried to lateral it, just like he did to Big Daddy Hairston against the Bengals, but the Oikers recovered and would score a few plays later.

I believe I heard Mike Patrick/Joe Theisman say during the broadcast that this was Mack's third game back. Specifically, he ran like a man possessed on the last drive. He had three monster runs inside the Oilers 36 with about 1:40 left and one timeout - a 12 yard run on first down, a 14 yard run on 3rd and 3 woth no timeouts, and the game-winning 5 yard TD run with :39 left.

Fond memory indeed!  Thanks for the link, post and reminder!!!  I forget what year I morphed from being brainwashed, rinsed and repeated from my dad to power steering the adventure on my own.  I think it was in 1976 when my dad drove us from Fairport, NY (Rochester) to Cleveland to take in our very 1st Cleveland Browns home game ever. This was the day Turkey Jones power-slammed Bradshaw on his head in a game little known Cleveland backup QB David Mays would be the winning QB.  The coolest thing ever was the highway suddenly had us driving along the side of Lake Erie with Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" playing on the radio (just a couple months or so after it was released).  Definitely a goose bumps moment.   Prior to then, the only times we saw Cleveland play live was when they visited Orchard Park to play Buffalo. Anyway, as fate would have it - the Browns finished that year 9-5 under HC Forest Gregg; and did NOT make the playoffs (just like going 10-6 when Joe Thomas was a rookie without making the playoffs).

Well a run play, of course.

  • I remember that game.  I've no idea why on earth Mathews threw the ball backwards.  He's quite lucky we won anyway.

Tell you what.  I always wanted Dick Enberg to cover our games UNTIL HE ACTUALLY COVERED THEM.  It felt like the Browns never FREAKIN won when he did our games. That said, MIKE PATRICK came out of nowhere to become one of my favorites.  I don't know what it was; but 1 time I hit the deck LMAO when he blurted out a HO-LEEE-COW at concert level.  Of course this the type of thing that could only describe watching something like @dutch-oven recalled from a usually smart football player like Clay Matthews. This guy consistently came up with some of the best descriptions for what unfolded/some of the things the Browns got themselves into.  That said, we didn't always lose when Mike Patrick did our games. In fact, the 80s were my golden era as a fan.  We're reasonable fans that have been through unreasonable circumstances.

I'm 99.9% certain it was Kevin Mack's 1st game back after the coke bust.

He gave a new definition for the "crack back" moniker lol.

I was living in Rochester, NY at the time and Bruce Smith had similar issues with Coke.  Both players were lucky they had a good support system so that drug didn't ruin them. I'll never forget when Mack trucked Greg Lloyd to the tune of Lloyd waking up to smelling salts.
