The Browns Board

    4. Chris Shula

Current position: Defensive coordinator, Los Angeles Rams

As we noted with LaFleur above, if you're a coordinator who is even remotely attached to Sean McVay, you're going to get attention during hiring cycles. That said, Shula's affiliation with McVay shouldn't be what has NFL decision-makers turn their attention toward him. Instead, it's the strong play by Los Angeles' defense over his tenure. Since assuming the DC role in 2024, the Rams have the fifth-highest pressure rate in the NFL and sixth-highest sack rate (including playoffs). He's taken a young unit and helped put L.A. in the thick of the Super Bowl conversation this season, where the Rams are holding opponents to 20.4 points per game, which is in the top third in the NFL. Shula's defense also has the third-lowest red zone touchdown rate (46.9%) and eighth-lowest third-down conversion rate (36.2) entering Week 18.

Of course, Shula's blue blood background as the son of former Bengals head coach David Shula and the grandson of the late Hall of Fame coach Don Shula doesn't hurt his chances.

  • I hate most Defensive Coordinators as HC... I get nightmares of Marty playing way to close to the vest not to lose... I'll take my chances with a young Kliff Kingsbury who has head coaching experience and also was a decent high school and college QB...

I have decided that there is only one to fit the Lucy Browns and that just because the name sounds like it should come from Tennessee, Jim Bob Cooter.

  • Who knows what'll happen at HC.  How about the minimalist approach:  Stef & Bubba get fired.  Schwartz gets the title HC added to his DC title.  And he hires a ST coach.

and the front office lets him hire his own OC ! that would work!

Sure.  Or maybe he likes Rees.

....Thinking out loud....would a HC from the defensive side of the ball tend to be more sane when it comes to game day decisions regarding 4th down?  You know, like maybe, punt.  Or take the FG.  To me there's too much craziness going on.

  • Joe Brady?

Former QB coach OC at two spots.

McDaniels with our media would be worth the price of admission.

  • I just hope and pray they fire Berry's ass.

I like Joe Brady.  FWIW about McDaniels - he's done a GREAT job with 2nd year QB Drake Maye; but he's proven twice he can't handle being HC of an entire team.

I thought it was Mike McDaniels not Josh.

Mike McDaniels seems a little aloof and out there sometimes I could see our media not taking to that space cadet mentality.  And of course McDaniels making them look foolish - he’s a Yale grad without the shirt and tie polish seems like he has some quick wit about him.

Can't I wishful think it was ANYBODY but this guy (below)? ? I forgot he even existed to the extent I hoped or thought you meant to say Josh McDaniels. This is clearly not HC material so it only makes sense there's a rumor the Browns are interested.  His current players don't look like they respect him at all as a HC.  Seriously, how can they?  No emotion or communication skills. Whenever I see him on TV he's not acting as a Leader of Men.  Then I wondered if he ever even played football so I researched a little more and posted what I found below.  It IS the Browns we're talking about though...

Not a fan but he regained control of the locker room and obviously player’s respect as they may end up with 7/8 wins compared to our 4/5.

Thanks for your pov MDD; and they have responded since the Browns beat them soundly - so it's definitely worthy of note.  I don't question his football IQ/Intellect as much as I question him ever being an ideal fit as a HC.  We've always seen Coaches that were better Coordinators than HCs -(ie; Norv Turner, Lindy Infante, Bud Carson, Josh McDaniel, Dennis Allen, Dan Quinn, Brian Daboll, Robert Saleh, Buddy Ryan, Matt Nagy, Steve Spagnuolo, etc).

To me, it's conceivable that players on the Dolphins started playing for their NFL futures/career survival more so than McDaniel's ability to coach it out of his players. He'll be a good Position Coach/Coordinator moving forward under a STRONG HC.  I just don't ever see him as an Andy Reid or we wouldn't be discussing it...

  • Mike McDaniel? No thanks.
