NFL Sophomore QBs: Drake Maye & Caleb Williams

The Browns Board

  • Okay folks, the team that employed and started rookie QB Drake Maye last year only won 4 of 17 games in 2024 while the team that employed QB Caleb Williams only won 5 of 17 games. Both went on to hire new Head Coaches for the 2025 season.  After adding Mike Vrable - NE was also intelligent enough to draft a LT Will Campbell in round 1 (#4 overall), RB TreVeyon Henderson in round 2, talented Washington State WR Kyle Williams in 2ound 3 as well as Georgia C Jared Wilson in round 3.  They also drafted another OTackle - Mizzou's Marcus Bryant in round 7. During the season they added talented veteran WR Stefon Diggs.  Looks to me like their needs assessment was very similar to the one many of us fans are thinking about in terms of similar skillsets at the same positions for the Browns.  Today the Patriots are 14-3 and headed to the playoffs.

The Bears hired HC Ben Johnson. In the 1st round they drafted TE Colston Loveland from TSUN, In the 2nd round they drafted Mizzou WR Luther Burden III & BC OTackle Ozzie Trapilo & UTAM DT Shemar Turner.  They also drafted Michigan State G Luke Newman in round 6. OL & WR added here too.  Today the Bears are 11-6 and headed to the playoffs.

Okay, we await what Haslam and Berry will do with hiring their HC and what Berry will do with the draft and NFL FA.

That works REAL Well Bob!    Our offense does have a frequent tendency to look like a Hee Haw episode while I'm giving it the ole "just be patient with Shedeur"  in other threads. My credibility is in the lost and found somewhere...

You had me curious, so I looked up stats on Drake Maye for his first 7 starts. I think it's also fair to say the Drake Maye had maybe 10-15% better talent around him than Sanders did this year. Additionally, they were working under a one and done coach who obviously was in over his head. Additionally,  just for context I also removed both games against the Jets as Maye came in relief or got hurt, respectively.

Through the first true 7 games he started, Drake Maye put up a QBR average of 54.45. The record during those games? 1-6.The point is, despite overall bad team play there was clearly something there that showed Maye was something to be reckoned with. Those same stats and data points show Mr. Sanders as bad- not just below average, but candidly awful.

I want to be sure to say I really respect and appreciate the idea of what you and others and trying to suggest. I wouldn't be giddy about it, but I wouldn't be angry if the draft strategy this year is all about adding playmakers and OL to see through, let's say 5-6 games, if Sanders turns the corner. But I sincerely hope the option B is there in the QB room, because I think it's gonna continue to look bad.

Thanks JRB - really appreciate your reply!  One thing we do know - being a rookie QB in the NFL Is a major challenge.  Being one in Cleveland can be next to impossible as we've often seen.

Remember back in the day when Tampa Bay used to be the franchise that would ruin young QBs until 1 day in 1986 Joe Gibbs said "hey I'll take Doug Williams off your hands for a 5th round pick in 1987 (Tampa used it on LB Tony Mayes who never went on to play in an NFL game for Tampa).  Then Bill Walsh wanted in on the fun here's what he gave up to get for Steve Young when TB gave up on him prematurely too according to Google here: image.png.ab311e0e2cf32e8d1f7980b8d82ac8f9.png

Today, BOTH Doug Williams & Steve Young are Super Bowl Champions and Hall of Fame QBs thanks to Tampa trading them to NFL teams that gave them toys & scoring weapons galore on the perimeter as well as excellent pass protection that the Owner FO in Tampa had no idea to provide for their QBs until an owner like Malcolm Glazer came along much later (from Rochester NY of all places)

Unfortunately, Jimmy Haslam & Andrew Berry have been a lot like that bad version of Tampa here in Cleveland despite finally having 1 good draft.   Bad OL & not nearly enough talent in the WR Corps except Undrafted Rookie FA Isaiah Bond didn't help Flacco any more than either rookie QB.  As soon as Flacco got to Cincy he lit it up at first because he had elite WRs and a little bit better OL than he had here protecting him.  There's some golden opportunities to address WR & OL in this draft.  If they don't do this in the upcoming draft - I'm going to have to ask myself at 62 years of age "is this just an epic waste of time here?"

I want you, in actual factual detail,  to go through this list and objectively tell me who is better, why, and provide statistics and factual information to back your claim up. I am more than willing to listen to your rebuttal. Last chance- you have to actually provide logical information and not just absolutely dull name calling or it's no longer worth a response. Because what I see is a 2025 Browns roster that had more all pros, more pro bowlers, and equal statistical skill players to that roster.

  • since the thread is about offense that is what i am going to compare, but wait ! there is not really much to compare to a team that traded and drafted wisely, we have Joel Botonio on the o-line our best players Fannin (rookie Te) Judkins (rookie rb ) Njoku (missed alot of games) some wr's that cant really catch to well and according to you no QB, so yes I would say Drake was more at 80% compared to your 10-15 %

edit : I forgot to mention 3 time pro bowler Teller which I think will  retire soon

  •  apples to oranges to compare the browns f.o to the pats, Cause i sure as hell didnt see the pats trade away all their fucking picks and give that dude all that money. So Yes I expect their offense to look 100 times better than our's.. fucking christ 10-15%

I answered your damn question and that will be the last fucking time you tell me what to do.

You know, my New Year's Resolution this year is not to lower my standards of conversation to those who aren't willing to raise theirs. So you know what? You win buddy. Despite writing to yourself three times and not remotely making sense because I didn't respond given my actual life priorities you got me. I feel extreme sympathy for you and whatever situation you're in, but I don't need to drag myself to that level. I hope you find solace in that, but this is done.

suck it dumbass, why did you reply now  you fucking loser. how hard is it to understand that the Patriots have a better front office and coaching staff than us ? in fact ill take it a step further, Drakes supporting cast is a 100% better than ours, so fuck you and your new years resolution ( like anyone over the age of 16 does that stupid shit)

    peace & love

    Go Browns

oh and I forgot to add , there is no such thing as santa clause either mother fucker

    Have A Blessed Day

  • The problem with us turning it around is the LOSER owner. The Bears and Pats have GREAT owners. We don’t.

Our front office and hierarchy want control of the coach. They want a yes man. They want to tell the coach who to play. They want to get the credit, not the coach. And as the Great Yoda said, “That is why you fail”

They should’ve kept Vrabel and fired Kevin last year. But that wasn’t going to happen as long as our owner is Jimmy.

  • Also, it makes my day coming on here and reading people , yelling, cursing, and making fun of others.  It’s HILARIOUS to me.

What about the Easter Bunny? Is he real?
