ESPN 2 Unsportsmanlike Morning Show Concluded Monken Insulted Jim Schwartz - They're WRONG & IRRESPONSIBLE

The Browns Board

  • I don't think Monken insulted him at all. These talking heads kill me with their takes at times.

I want to see Schwartz back here as well. Schwartz needs to come to a decision quickly. I'm assuming the ball is in his court.

  • I listened to the same segment and to be honest, I'm 'in the middle' of both sides. On the one hand, it's not wrong that the whole quote puts a lot more context than the quote floating around. That's just the reality of sports journalism and it's not changing.

On the other hand, would it really have been that hard to say "it's obviously a difficult situation- I plan to meet with Jim soon to consider all the options before moving forward" instead of what he said? Like I don't need Stefanski level coach speak, but there's also levels to this crap. However, that's probably what you get when you hire a 60 year old first time HC that no one else was even considering.

This whole situation reeks of a one and done coaching carousel, but maybe that's their stupid plan anyway. I'm so disenfranchised by this whole operation at this point it's hard to have anything but apathy.

  • There was  the part where Monken said that when he was preparing to play Cleveland that he was chipping Myles Garrett and not Schwartz.  And when arranging blocking he wasn't blocking Schwartz, he was blocking Grant Delpit.  He was pretty much saying that it's the players that make the D good.   And when he was asked if he'd spoken to him his answer was like,  'Yeah, I talked to him.'  Almost as if it was a waste of time.  Also, I read a headline somewhere saying that that phone call was rather tense.

Now, if the tense phone call is true, then I'm of the mindset that Schwartz should not be retained.  It would not be good for team spirit.

This was always the danger if Schwartz was not given the job.

To the part in bold, I would love to agree with your question.  Unfortunately, the reality that there's 31 better business owners than the one we count on - my guess is Jimmy wanted a "Yes sir" to immediately deflecting any and all questions about Schwartz and especially not guaranteeing any soon to be meetings between Schwartz and Owner & FO. There's a reason there's still a dumpster fire burning because of this owner....

  • what about this fucking idiot

  • The national media loves to pick on the Browns.

Sadly some of it is deserved?

  • I normally enjoy the trio and watching them argue sports topics that interest me. I usually favor Canty's view so today caught me completely off guard.

Today, I watched some really disappointing and irresponsible sports journalism from Chris Canty taken from Mary Kay's question to Monken.  I watched the presser twice. In the brief period Monken spoke, he mentioned he had to prepare for Jim Schwartz' defense twice a year and that he respects Jim Schwartz.  The length of the presser where he spoke and answered questions was only about 13 minutes, if that.  Anyway, Monken also made it a point in another part of the presser when asked about Schwartz to say it wouldn't be fair to talk about Schwartz while adding he respects him.

Canty went on to say that Monken trying to show up a Coach that has already earned the players' respect was a horrible move as a brand new HC. The ONLY horrible move I saw was Canty taking things out of context in his Cliffs Notes caliber research.  The only thing Canty proved is he was in a hurry with his research so much so that he would've seen the respect that his limited effort wasn't able to include.

If Chris Canty was going to call out Todd Monken for insulting Jim Schwartz - he should have at least watched and listened to the entire presser instead of only reading/listening to the 15 seconds of it he made his entire outspoken conclusion about.  There were 2 different occasions when Schwartz was brought up and neither showed any disrespect from Monken toward Schwartz.  In fact, wanting to KEEP the same Defense the players are cozy and familiar with is compliment to the work Schwartz did here whether he intended it to be or not.

From a fan that wanted Schwartz to get the PROMOTION to HC rather than seeing him insulted via Haslam & Berry requiring him to win an essay contest and do homework before a 2nd interview - If I felt Monken insulted Schwartz there is a 0% chance I would have remained church mouse quiet about it.  While I don't blame Schwartz for feeling insulted by the Owner & GM - I really wish he would remember he never wanted to be HC here in lieu of his comfort zone that he could continue to perfect if he agreed to stay on as the DC.  Back when Marty Schottenheimer wanted to keep Lindy Infante's Offense here when Infante departed for GB - the guy that took over the OC duty with that offense didn't have the background or understanding of how to utilize it all nearly as well.  It never ran nearly as efficiently again.  Sooo, I'd love to see Schwartz return as the DC & Assistant HC.  They freakin gave Bubba Ventrone the titles of ST Coordinator & Assistant HC just to put it in perspective...

Canty is a dumb racist monkey...

Agreed!  I don't mind that too much especially when it's truthful.  That said, Chris Canty took part of scoop from Mary Kay - do I even have to type anything more? Mary Kay is a hack as it is - she had quite a reputation on the OBR for writing articles that looked very similar to content posted on that board before-hand. Anyway Canty had them share only the part where Monken spoke about his offensive players needing to chip Myles, and naming various players on the Browns' D the Rats' offense had to matchup with as a "SEE, MONKEN'S NOT GIVING SCHWARTZ ANY CREDIT AND THAT'S DISRESPECTFUL!" ? ?? Thanks for the extensive research you put into that one Chris!  In other words, Chris Canty is out in Santa Barbara for the Super Bowl this week and he didn't want to spend any time at all preparing for this mountain he's made out of an ant hill.  Hopefully someone tells him he should have listened to the whole thing.

  • Yeah I watched the whole presser and I thought TM came over great. Heartfelt, passionate, respectful...he showed more personality in 13 minutes than KS did in 6 years....that doesn't make him a great coach I know, but I'm amazed that anyone can come to the conclusion that he was somehow disrespectful to jim schwartz.

Talking heads creating talking points to create response to keep them in a job ??

there is the eagles job, maybe, depends on if their dc retires, and now i am hearing the raiders, we will find out about that next week

  • IMO  Schwartz should not be retained.

    WTH not?

    Glad you asked.  🙂

The hiring of Monken over Schwartz did not go smoothly with Schwartz.  It had to go smoothly for it to have a chance of working.  Schwartz had a LOT of support from the players.  Schwartz would've had to have immediately come out with a congratulatory message for Monken after the announcement.

Instead, the exact opposite happened.  And now, since it would serve to divide the team and locker room, the winner and loser can not be on the same team.

Great job of making the reader know where you are coming from; and even more important - having it make perfect sense...

To make the first game in the country that matchup certainly is something. Good thing the French are notoriously known for their generosity to outsiders, /s

Oh yes, 100%- It's very, very obvious that Jimmy just can't stay out of the "room where it happens" to quote Hamilton. It's absolutely the reason we're in the Watson mess and this coaching search transpired the way it did. I also pretty strongly believe it's why Sanders is on this team, amongst many other bad decisions.

It's honestly wild how the Browns were a solid playoff team just 4 years ago- so much ruined by an owner who can't help himself.

jrb, we're the only fan-base that morphed into a massive support group.

I believe Vic Fangio is returning to Philly. If the Raiders are interested, that would be the only other spot for him to go.

@orion brings up a very good viewpoint though. Like, as much as we love what Schwartz has done here, do we want to potentially cause drama in the locker room? Plus, would Schwartz be the type to maybe start talking to players and other staff about how he would be doing better if Monken falters out of the gate?

  • The damage has been done... He either retires , is traded.. Or he sits out the year.. Either way... I don't see him coming in any way or capacity

I think that Dutch was probably the first to actually state the concern of a divide in loyalty being the possible outcome.

I think back to when Schwartz was brought in, and how the media felt that, as a bonus, he would be the heir apparent in case a HC change was required.  No doubt he was aware of that media sentiment.  And then the time comes, and he's brought his unit to the upper echelon of the league...and he's skipped over for a guy even older than he is.

I believe that Haslam probably liked Schwartz.....but he and his gang decided that they wanted a HC from the offensive side of the ball.  And obviously Schwartz finds that offensive.

  • Reports, not MKC style we got the best we know exactly what we’re doing, were that dl coach, lb coach, cb coach attended Monken presser….

DC and safety coach did not. Time will tell
