  • Regarding redlining, this is a fun interactive map that will give you an idea of what prospective home buyers were dealing with a few generations ago. It’s Sacramento, CA in 1939. You would think they’d be super liberal in California, but check out the notes they wrote for the various sections of the city. They were very concerned with where the Orientals and Negroes were living back then.

  • Ooh! I found one for Cleveland too. Have fun y’all.

I looked up and found Maple Hts ( b30) section my parents bought and moved into (1961)

and having been away for so long, I still have fond memories from there.

Very cool! I figured those of you with ties to Cleveland would get a kick out of this.

I get a kick out of the terminology used for groups of people. Eg. Maple Hts was settled by “Bohemian” immigrants. I know Bohemian Rhapsody but l had to look up what a Bohemian immigrant was. Apparently Czech folks from the old Austrian empire.

It's one of the funniest cases of the Streisand Effect I've ever seen.

The pendulum swung too far the other way to correct it. In hindsight, I should have just thrown away my integrity, checked the Hispanic box, and I'd actually be building wealth right now instead of digging myself out of a hole of student loan debt. Here's data that shows that they lowered standards based on race in an attempt to drive quotas. There simply aren't that many exceptional black and hispanic applicants to matriculate into all the medical schools, so the schools have to reach lower.

    image.thumb.png.40889c27dfce3fad69af84c13482b09d.png

They stopped publishing this data for about a decade, during the peak of woke bullshit, because people were asking questions (and suing over racial discrimination). One of the best things about two Trump terms is the SCOTUS decision that made this racist quota illegal. The AAMC started publishing this data again in 2024.

The pendulum has absolutely not swung back "the other way". I work in a pretty desirable field (not engineering), most in leadership are white males, and they have a bias, conscious or not, towards mentoring and advancing people that look like them. This is true in many fields.

I'd love to see standardized test scores by income as well. Definitely easier to do well if you're paying for private tutoring, are born into a better school district, etc.

Regardless, I know medical school admissions inclusive of race is very close to your heart. Even if in the specific instance of admissions it's better to be an underrepresented minority, ignoring any disadvantages to being one prior to or past that point, that's hardly swaying the pendulum back the other way. Decades of systemic racism still puts me in a better position in this country as a white male even if I had less engineering scholarships available to me. Not near as bad as it was, but not completely gone. Though certainly much more present during the youth of our MAGA elderly friends on here.

You will have this when most of the population is white. Also, most black males in leadership roles tend to hire mostly black, it's not a white exclusive phenomenon.

Typical woody, has half a thought about something he is parroting then fades out to let others fill in the void.

Can you provide what that percentage may be with the country and in respects to race? Do you think only wealthy white people send their kids to private tutoring? All schools have the same curriculum and teachers that try, it's not the system or wealth, it's culture. White kids also grow up in other school districts.

Also, my son helps tutor his friends and cousins, it doesn't take a wealthy family to hire him. He doesn't even ask for anything but you have to have students willing to get help. Help is always accessible.

Standardized test scores by income, are you trying to say only white people are wealthy? Are you trying to say every black person is poor? Are you arguing for minorities?

What exactly are you hoping to prove about test scores and income? Generally, people with higher income care more and put in more effort. Wealth isn't given to them.

If you want to discredit the work you put in as coming down to being white, then go ahead.

Asians were discriminated against as well, came over with nothing, didn't have the 'head start', got thrown into holding camps during the war, yet somehow, without all the government assistance that is being handed out today to help minorities, in the billions, they still managed to come out ahead of everyone.

I got to where I am because I put the time in, I studied, work hard, am professional and be sure to go above and beyond to earn my keep. Eventually, having a good attitude and work ethic pays off. Sitting back and crying how unfair everything is while coveting what others may have will keep you where you're at.

Everyone has their struggles, doesn't matter if you're white or a minority, you either work at it or your the problem.

Fuck you and your racist bullshit. Go count your blessings that you only got everything you didn't earn because you were born white.

It’s dated, but not outdated. It’s a phenomenon. That’s why l said to understand it you have to think in terms of opportunity over time, and by that l mean generations.

You really haven’t shown that you grasped it anyway. I don’t think you even understand what you’re arguing against.

Certainly things have been done in recent times to curb the phenomenon. We have anecdotal examples above from the medical field and whatever Woody does. We’re all aware of the “woke” stuff, which l characterize as a radical rejection of the Norman Rockwell America. Hopefully you get the reference.

I would say step 1 for you is to grasp the concept. It very much is an historical thing. Once you understand that, you will be armed to debate its lasting effects in to modern times.

A lot here to unpack. And a lot that's incorrect. I'll touch on some of it while waiting for my flight

    - sure, yeah, people are biased towards their own. That's my point. Certain groups have had more of a history in leadership and that helps with a self fulfilling prophecy. That's the point. I'm sure it's common for all ethnicities, races, etc. The point being though it's white males that have the history in charge.

    - private tutoring is clearly more accessible for wealthier families. Not working an extra job. More tutors in the area. Disposable income. Etc. If you think a poor kid can get high level tutoring just as easy as a rich kid, on average, then that's just a ridiculous thought that lacks common sense.

    - oh Jesus, here we go with the "all", "only", "every" bullshit. I wasn't speaking in absolutes. I speak in averages and data. You MAGA dip shits live in a terminally white and black world. Which is why you can receive one anecdote validating your bias and then shut out all over information, data, etc conflicting with that bias.

    - "generally wealthier people care more". "Wealth isn't given to them". One of the greatest indicators of future wealth is the zip code you grew up in. Yes, exceptions exist, I'll save you from stating some anecdote, but it's much more than just "hard work".

Yes, everyone has their struggles. You've benefited from being a white male, especially in the time you grew up.

I've benefited from being a white male.

All of our success (whatever yours may be) isn't ONLY due the that fact, but it absolutely mattered.

Understanding that fact doesn't discredit everything you've done.

Everyone has their struggles, doesn't matter if you're white or a minority, you either work at it or your the problem.

Fuck you and your racist bullshit. Go count your blessings that you only got everything you didn't earn because you were born white.

These are facts, whether you choose to accept it or not.

Now your generation specifically being set up for success is a whole other topic...

Poor doesn't equate minority. You are now discussing poor vs wealthy, not white vs minority.

  • Nothing on why Asians, who were heavily discriminated against, were able to overcome their situation??

In fact, I argue there is no place better in the world for a minority than America.

Wrong, being white didn't matter one bit.

You are wrong. A fuck ton of information has been presented here to that end. You either have the willingness and capacity to understand it or you don’t. I don’t fault you either way.

What’s most interesting to me is why you concern yourself with having an opinion on something you don’t even understand? Why bother? That’s some janky cart before the horse shit.

I've barely spoken and been ignoring you to address woody, what would you know, even if I post 100 times on this subject in this forum, of what I do or don't understand?

I think it's you that doesn't understand but thinks he does because you found an article that we used to have racist laws 70 years ago?

My data is my life. You are misinformed.

That’s a super weird response. You have been given data to wrap your head around the concept of “white privilege.” You either have the capacity and willingness to absorb it or you don’t. You now have the option of making it part of “your data”, whatever the fuck that means.

None of this changes the data that the rest of the world is working with.

Look, there’s plenty of things l don’t understand. I generally try not to engage in debates over those things because then l look like a complete jackass. I appreciate your tenacity to look like a jackass.
