Who do you think our starting QB will be?

  • I will never forget that FROZEN game against a crippled Saints team...that we HAD TO win to stay alive for the playoffs.  Watson threw 3 absolutely beautiful TD passes.  Two of 'em went straight through the frozen fingers of Njoku & Donavan Peoples-Jones.  And the third was just about to be caught by Njoku crossing the back of the end zone when his feet slid right out from under him and the ball sailed right over him as he was horizontal about a foot off the ground, before he landed.   We freakin' lost to a team that had to play half the game in a wild-cat situation because of their terrible QB situation.   - the dome can't be built fast enough.

  •  Monken with the perfect response..

We've been on the field three practices, which was awesome to get out there with our players."

The point is what I've seen after three days, OK, that gives us a little bit of a 40,000-foot view of where we're at. But that can change.

  • The one thing they're not taking into consideration is that if Watson demonstrates that he's the best QB....the other players will see that.  And if they don't play him, then the players will lose confidence in the coach and the organization.  There's also the fact that the team wasn't very good when he was playing.  I know that it sounds like I'm defending Watson but I'm just trying to be real.  Even Zac said that Watson looked like the best QB in the one practice that he saw.  I'm sure if someone made Monken listen to Jackson's remarks he'd laugh and say, Who the fuck is Zac Jackson!  Basically he's just riling up the fanbase against Watson...which is not a wise thing to do in case it goes the other way.

Which is why I don't think Monken will not hesitate to start him.

A good way to lose a locker room is to give the players a reason to doubt you, and if the majority of them thinks they are being held back because the wrong player is starting, that's what very well could happen... but...

Jackson isn't wrong. Long term, starting Watson accomplishes little. And this team is in the middle of being built.

  • The Browns and squeelers just made a trade. The Browns traded watson, shadeur and Gabriel for Drew Allar and a 7th round pick next draft.

Taylen Green, out of Arkansas,  will back up Allar, and the Browns will sign Bryson Barnes out of Utah State as the 3rd string qb.

but then I woke up, dammit. lol

  • Here's the QB competition as I see it.

We have the 12th pick of the 1st round, Deshaun Watson, healthy, rested, rearing to go.

Against SheDufuss Sanders (as Ballpeen refers to him), the midget, and the 6th round pick who can run fast and jump high.

Without having to use too many little grey brain cells, Who would you bet your money on to win that battle?

  • Who do I think will start? Watson

    Who should start? Sanders

I always say I root for the jersey (Browns), not the player. But starting Watson will be another PR nightmare, almost giving the fans the finger.

We drafted two QBs a year ago yet the rumors of Watson are swirling. Unreal.

    I agree

I fear Watson the Great will lead our offense to the altitudinal heights of Death Valley.

I would prefer Sanders and if he fails, our first round pick in 27

  • I also agree with Bob. I want Shedeur to start, but I think it's going to be Watson at the beginning of the year. I see this playing out like last season, just swap Flacco for Watson and Shedeur/Gabriel reverse spots at QB2/QB3. Jimmy could care less about the fan base, he's paying Watson so he'll play.

  • Unless Watson comes out sharp and lights out I'd rather see us start Sanders.

I don't think any of us are expecting much this season, so allow our only serviceable QB to go out and settle whether he's a back up or a starter.

Then we can get serious about whether or not we need to draft a QB next year and I'm sure just about everyone here already thinks we do need to find a QB next year regardless, not having much faith in the QBs we already have.

What I'll be thinking about is how do we get in a position to get our QB if possible next year?

Ya know, since we revamped the OL...and drafted 2 WR's...with Judkins, Fannin, Sampson, if we can get some fairly good QB play, with our D, why shouldn't we expect to be successful?  I mean, 'on paper', the OL & WR's will be better.  That should in turn allow the QB and RB's to be better.  Of course, all bets are off if the OL just turns out to be just different big fat guys...and Fano, Concepcion & Boston struggle like rookies can.  But at least this year there IS hope.

We might be decent and we can't do much worse than last year, but we won't be where we want to be.

I should have specified, we don't expect much from our QBs

I can certainly understand that.  But we certainly haven't seen them operate with a good enough bunch of offensive players around them.  Maybe?  The QB's have that now?  Maybe?

If the Browns do improve, say enough to end up more in the #10-15 overall range, expect the team to trade a bunch of picks to move up.

Precisely!  Some QBs had any or all of the following: 1) WRs that could get open immediately (at the line of scrimmage if need be); 2) OTs that could pass protect for a reasonable length of time; 3) a healthy Interior OL; 4) a minimum experience volume of 12-13 starts.   I guess we could ask any of the following guys that had to play QB for the Carolina Panthers prior to 2025 just how easy it all was from Sam Darnold to Baker Mayfield to Bryce Young before they arrived at the whole picture being greater than the sum of it's parts.  I never understood that saying until now - by accident.

Anyway, I DO know the Browns never got the Deshaun Watson that succeeded early on in Houston; while CJ Stroud went from Rookie of the Year to "what the Hell happened to CJ?"

When Kurt Warner was between the ages of 22 & 27 - he did anything from bagging groceries to playing Arena Football to QB in NFL Europe after failing to make the Packers as an undrafted rookie.  Once he got another chance as a 28 year old signed to be the backup for extremely well paid FA QB Trent Green - Green got a serious season ending injury in the last preseason game so here came a QB without high expectations Kurt Warner.  Fortunately, he had a very good coaching staff that included HC Dick Vermeil & OC Mike Martz.  He also had a dynamite RB (Marshall Faulk) that could exceed 1000 yards rushing and receiving; and has anyone ever heard of some blind side LT named Orlando Pace? Oh, he was good enough to in the Pro Football Hall of Fame?  Okay, so who did he have to throw to beside Marshall Faulk? WRs: Isaac Bruce, Torrey Holt and Ricky Proehl? STOP IT!   Did the Browns give Flacco or Sanders ANY of this last year?

This off-season - the coaching staff was changed & there was a HUGE commitment made to the OL & WR Corps.  Let's hope that all comes together for whatever QB that earns the starting job.  Let's see if the QB can hit a WR that gets open immediately at the line of scrimmage or thread the needle deep to Concepcion/Bond/Boston.  I don't think Sanders is as bad as those claiming they've already seen enough. If we ARE going to do that - let's remember how many fans at this time last year thought the 2026 draft class was going to have our franchise QB of the future in it despite realizing teams like the Browns and Jets could easily scare many top QB prospects back to the NIL for millions of $??  As it turned out, who beside Mendoza at #1 overall in the 2026 draft class looks like an eventual franchise QB?  Was anyone saying Ty Simpson (still awaiting his 1st start) at this time last year?

I think it's interesting to note - the difference Harold Fannin made to the offense. He had 72 freaking receptions, 6 touchdowns in '25 - the leading receiver ! This latest draft class - wr's, oline guys, this offense should take off ! With more weapons to work with - the qb's are the only part of the offense that will hold them back from being the best they can be.

Since you and many others always made it known how awful Stefanski was; shouldn't that train of thought bolded above now make it conceivable that without THE problem - why should the QBs hold the offense back?

Let's take a look at the QB competition: Watson, Green, Sanders, and Gabriel. It may look more like a Barbershop Quartet when the QB situation here consists of 3 black guys competing with 1 little white guy to be the leader of the offense.  I'm glad I'm not the cult type so their skin color doesn't bother me nearly as much as anyone's ignorance against them does. Well, we could give Shedeur Sanders a shot and I think we will once it all plays out in training camp/pre-season.  He just graduated from the University of Colorado with a 3.9 GPA so I'm guessing he understands Monken is just pushing his competitive buttons to bring out the best in his young QB.

Now that we have WRs that can get open as immediately as at the line of scrimmage - Monken and staff can teach Sanders how to tap such a perk.  The situation with the efforts to improve our OL & WR positions shouldn't perpetuate the QBs from holding back the offense - it should give them the essential tools to do their job.  Not giving QBs pass pro or WR talent is like asking an Analyst to work without a computer/laptop as well as or better than those than those that work with the essential tools.
