Who do you think our starting QB will be?
-
Ya know, since we revamped the OL...and drafted 2 WR's...with Judkins, Fannin, Sampson, if we can get some fairly good QB play, with our D, why shouldn't we expect to be successful? I mean, 'on paper', the OL & WR's will be better. That should in turn allow the QB and RB's to be better. Of course, all bets are off if the OL just turns out to be just different big fat guys...and Fano, Concepcion & Boston struggle like rookies can. But at least this year there IS hope.
I should have specified, we don't expect much from our QBs

-
Unless Watson comes out sharp and lights out I'd rather see us start Sanders.
I don't think any of us are expecting much this season, so allow our only serviceable QB to go out and settle whether he's a back up or a starter.
Then we can get serious about whether or not we need to draft a QB next year and I'm sure just about everyone here already thinks we do need to find a QB next year regardless, not having much faith in the QBs we already have.
What I'll be thinking about is how do we get in a position to get our QB if possible next year?
-
I can certainly understand that. But we certainly haven't seen them operate with a good enough bunch of offensive players around them. Maybe? The QB's have that now? Maybe?
Precisely! Some QBs had any or all of the following: 1) WRs that could get open immediately (at the line of scrimmage if need be); 2) OTs that could pass protect for a reasonable length of time; 3) a healthy Interior OL; 4) a minimum experience volume of 12-13 starts. I guess we could ask any of the following guys that had to play QB for the Carolina Panthers prior to 2025 just how easy it all was from Sam Darnold to Baker Mayfield to Bryce Young before they arrived at the whole picture being greater than the sum of it's parts. I never understood that saying until now - by accident.
Anyway, I DO know the Browns never got the Deshaun Watson that succeeded early on in Houston; while CJ Stroud went from Rookie of the Year to "what the Hell happened to CJ?"
When Kurt Warner was between the ages of 22 & 27 - he did anything from bagging groceries to playing Arena Football to QB in NFL Europe after failing to make the Packers as an undrafted rookie. Once he got another chance as a 28 year old signed to be the backup for extremely well paid FA QB Trent Green - Green got a serious season ending injury in the last preseason game so here came a QB without high expectations Kurt Warner. Fortunately, he had a very good coaching staff that included HC Dick Vermeil & OC Mike Martz. He also had a dynamite RB (Marshall Faulk) that could exceed 1000 yards rushing and receiving; and has anyone ever heard of some blind side LT named Orlando Pace? Oh, he was good enough to in the Pro Football Hall of Fame? Okay, so who did he have to throw to beside Marshall Faulk? WRs: Isaac Bruce, Torrey Holt and Ricky Proehl? STOP IT! Did the Browns give Flacco or Sanders ANY of this last year?
This off-season - the coaching staff was changed & there was a HUGE commitment made to the OL & WR Corps. Let's hope that all comes together for whatever QB that earns the starting job. Let's see if the QB can hit a WR that gets open immediately at the line of scrimmage or thread the needle deep to Concepcion/Bond/Boston. I don't think Sanders is as bad as those claiming they've already seen enough. If we ARE going to do that - let's remember how many fans at this time last year thought the 2026 draft class was going to have our franchise QB of the future in it despite realizing teams like the Browns and Jets could easily scare many top QB prospects back to the NIL for millions of $?? As it turned out, who beside Mendoza at #1 overall in the 2026 draft class looks like an eventual franchise QB? Was anyone saying Ty Simpson (still awaiting his 1st start) at this time last year?

I think it's interesting to note - the difference Harold Fannin made to the offense. He had 72 freaking receptions, 6 touchdowns in '25 - the leading receiver ! This latest draft class - wr's, oline guys, this offense should take off ! With more weapons to work with - the qb's are the only part of the offense that will hold them back from being the best they can be.

Since you and many others always made it known how awful Stefanski was; shouldn't that train of thought bolded above now make it conceivable that without THE problem - why should the QBs hold the offense back?
Let's take a look at the QB competition: Watson, Green, Sanders, and Gabriel. It may look more like a Barbershop Quartet when the QB situation here consists of 3 black guys competing with 1 little white guy to be the leader of the offense. I'm glad I'm not the cult type so their skin color doesn't bother me nearly as much as anyone's ignorance against them does. Well, we could give Shedeur Sanders a shot and I think we will once it all plays out in training camp/pre-season. He just graduated from the University of Colorado with a 3.9 GPA so I'm guessing he understands Monken is just pushing his competitive buttons to bring out the best in his young QB.
Now that we have WRs that can get open as immediately as at the line of scrimmage - Monken and staff can teach Sanders how to tap such a perk. The situation with the efforts to improve our OL & WR positions shouldn't perpetuate the QBs from holding back the offense - it should give them the essential tools to do their job. Not giving QBs pass pro or WR talent is like asking an Analyst to work without a computer/laptop as well as or better than those than those that work with the essential tools.

Per the bolded part above, Sanders DID have a WR that could get open at the line of scrimmage or deep at Colorado. That guy I speak of (Travis Hunter Jr) won the Heisman with Sanders feeding him as well as opposing QBs when Travis played CB. I'm looking forward to seeing what Monken can do with all the young talent even though I have to understand there will be some growing pains as new G-T tandems are establishing chemistry/gaining experience while a newbie or the Wypler Snapper earns the job at C.

Hang in there Jax! I know we've been extremely well trained for Doom & Gloom in a place where "Next Year" often feels like it's 10 years away. When the Browns blew an 18-3 lead over the Dolphins in the playoffs during Kosar's rookie year (1985) - the next year was "The Drive" in the AFC Championship at home. Now, we're really chomping at the bits for another "Next Year" so we make it to another AFC Championship Game - this time in Denver. This time it was Earnest Byner helping us erase a big 1st half deficit only to have "The Fumble" within a yard of the goal line preventing Byner from knotting the score instead of our stomachs. I almost wish I was smart enough to realize "next year" never comes - but I'm just too dumb or too loyal or still processing.

All good lol. Orion brought up a good point I forgot about, we have better pieces in place around our QBs, let's see what happens.
I don't like our QBs to be honest but I'm open minded.
I'd like to see Watson and Sanders come in and be focused with a competitive chip on their shoulder.
And hey, even if we win a SB, there will still be 'next year'. ? As long as we're all around for it.

Jimmy Haslam focused on next "120 days" to improve the Browns
Haslam reiterated the importance of winning as an organization
"The next 120 days are crucial for the organization," Haslam said. "We've got to find the right head coach. We've got to be efficient again in free agency. We have 10 draft picks including two number 1s. We have four picks in the top three rounds. And we've got to get really good players who are really good people again. We've got to be opportunistic if trade opportunities come along. We are solely focused on having a great 120 days so we can start winning games around here."

Who will be the Browns’ starting quarterback?
Berry has admitted that the team doesn’t know yet. Currently, the Browns are slated to begin offseason workouts with Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel rostered, plus whomever they might decide to add.
Berry said after Stefanski’s dismissal that the new head coach would have a say in the decision, adding “it's something that has to be solidified,” which could be interpreted as the team isn’t satisfied with what they already have, no matter who comes in as head coach.
Watson.. Haslam admitted to "a big swing & miss" on Watson.
As of March 2026, Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam expressed cautious optimism for Deshaun Watson, stating he has a "great chance" to start and a fresh start under a new offense. Despite previously calling the trade a "big swing and miss" in 2025 due to injuries and performance, Haslam noted, "we’re all excited" about a potential turnaround.
What's next?
Watson got PAID! Sanders is on a rookie deal.
Should Watson lose his starting job due to Injury?
I'll trust Monkin to give Sander's his chance to beat out Watson in camp.
Sander's can't waste his reps on drifting around.
Watson can't hold the ball stressing this new OL..(or risk another injury)
A no Nonsense Todd Monken will have both QB's see 1's at inter squad practices.. stay tuned
As of 120 days? Watson starts.. Sanders backup.. Green inactive.. Gabriel PS

I don't do sequels but hold on to that thought for a second. Having said that, did you know when your buddy Flugel watched Rocky I the 9th time that he finally beat Apollo Creed? I finally got my $'s worth although it did take a lot of MD 20/20; and I couldn't even tell anyone the next day if the popcorn tasted good. Just kidding of course; but I did watch that 1st one at least a few times over the years. Self-convicted - Not the brightest apple in the orchard!
Wouldn't it be nice if this QB the Browns just drafted shocked the world at QB like Brock Purdy after getting all tutored up by Jon Gruden?

Now I'm scared to dream...
I'll be doing another virtual classroom on Taylen tonight around 7:30pm. Mostly because, I realize that, I've turn into a sort of "counter culture" for football.
When the media is hyping a 6th round pick, I feel it's a (my) responsibility to bring fans back down to earth. I might not draw the crowd the hype-men do, but at least I'm not going to make a clown of myself like some of those guys.
Jump on if you can make it.

Thanks TJ! I might be able to do that. I don't think you're counter culture at all - I was just having fun with you and Dutch in the flow of conversation at my thought of what if this 1 QB we drafted in the 6th round became the answer to all our problems. He'd be a nice slot receiver like Randy Moss was a rookie if he had the hand-eye coordination to go with his killer good fitness/quicks/speed...

I meant that, given my assessments being... I'll say 'tempered', it's almost its own counter-culture by default. Not intentionally contrarian, but comes across that way mostly because I refuse to partake in the unnecessary hype and build-up when it's unwarranted.
