“Going against him, he’s gotten so much better in these past couple of weeks," Verse said. "And because he’s getting better, it’s getting to the point where I’m starting to learn things from him. I’m starting to learn a little bit about my tendencies, and what he’s picking up on. So it’s making me a better player as well.”
That's awesome and absolutely I love the amount of time Verse has put in with not only his guys, but the guys across from him. It will make everyone individually and collectively better for it.
That said, I can find you hundreds of quotes from players who complimented their teammates in practice and joint sessions then those same teammates went on and struggled in live fire against opposing players. None of Jared's quote changes that Spencer had a pretty average debut where he did some rookie things - both good and bad.

Going from the consistent competition levels Fano's college team at Utah faced isn't anything like some of the competition he'll face in the NFL/AFC North in particular. Now factor in he's changing back to his 2nd most efficient position (LT) on the OL as rookie. Why that? There's going to be an adjustment period.
Remember when the Browns drafted Nevada T Austin Corbett 33rd overall in 2018 (2-3 slots ahead of Nick Chubb)? Corbett got off to a slow start adjusting to the NFL not nearly as ready to start on the OL as another former Nevada T Joel Bitonio once did here. And what did most of ou fans think about him as a result? "Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out." He went elsewhere and became a starter at OG for the Super Bowl Champion LA Rams and stated 40 of 41 games there per this cut and paste:

That led to a contract extension in Carolina meaning they liked him too. Today, he's competing for a starting OL spot with the Buffalo Bills. Overall point here is some guys don't develop as quickly as others (especially given the competition levels faced in college); but sometimes a development that took longer to unfold all of the reasons he was drafted for can lead to a nice long career full of quality starts. That's probably a lot more guys like that who that had similar beginnings in the trenches and woked their way into solid stater. sFano's NFL career is still in diapers just 1 pre-season game old. I'm reminding myself of that every bit as much as I am with you and others.

Absolutely it's a development process. My critique of Fano isn't that I'm unaware of him being a rookie and him needing time to improve. Only that, as expected for a rookie, he struggled at various points. The downside in the Not For Long is that teams who draft rookies have an initial period in order to gauge a players progress, then to see if that progress merits further investment.
Corbett is an interesting example. He was an OT, got ***some*** reps at OT then kicked inside to OG. He struggled there, quite a bit. He was shipped off halfway through his 2nd season and found a home where he could focus on his one position.
Fano & Corbett share that commonality - they both have a home at 1 position, post switch, they're now being tasked with improving on. What I'm hoping shows up in my charting for Fano is continuous improvement over a 17 game season.
By no means did I expect Spencer to be Joe Thomas day 1. I also made my thoughts clear on his struggles pre/post draft. If he can minimize those struggles and become a consistently effective LT then that's great. If those same shortcomings consistently pop-up, I will be equal in my critique and my praise.

Well said; and I knew you knew TJ. That said, I thought it was an ideal opportunity in the flow of discussion to remind everyone (including muhself) he's gonna have some growing pains unless he's the next Joe Thomas, Walter Jones or Orlando Pace. My guess is the college competition levels of those 3 guys had them better prepared than a guy coming out of Utah (even though Utah faced Texas Tech's defense that had some studs heading to the NFL). I'll bet his Utah buddy/teammate Caleb Lomu is finding some challenges at LT in NE's Camp (while last year's 4th overall pick there - Will Campbell is probably hoping Lomu does well so he can kick inside like Corbett did in LA and face some slower footed pass rushers). In fairness to Corbett, the Browns had him learning C, G & T as a wide-eyed rookie - and he just wasn't ready for the too much too soon (cognitive) overload.

Fuckin' Christ.... that dudes voice is SO difficult to listen to that I had to shut it off after 10 seconds.

Listening to The Fan right now and Daryl Ruiter seems to think that Austin Barber has impressed the Browns coaching staff so much that he's threatening to become the starting right guard.

It will be nice to have Dawand Jones back.
He is capable on either side.

I trust @syd more than any of the talking heads on that station.
Wow, if this works out, what a draft it could become.

Yes INDEED Bob! Austin Barber impressed a lot of people at the Senior Bowl practices. Somewhere between then and post draft discussions in here - I shared the video footage of him in pass protection taking on several different edge rushers in 1 on 1 drills at those practices...
