Braylon Edwards Traded to the Jets
-
Where Mangini f'd up was in not moving BE and BQ before the year. But at this point, anything we get for Braylon is a plus because he's gone at the end of the year anyway.
I know I am way behind the times as I played 36 and had lunch at the course, but Mangini didn't screw up. He is a coach with a new team...he had to see who was a player and who would buy in to the program..we don't need to bash mangini for this....I actually like the move, and at this point still don't know what all we got as I stopped reading to make this comment.

This is a no brainer. A good trade.
How did you do?

This is going to be like the Steelers getting rid of Plexico. Here comes a superbowl Braylon
-
Honestly, I don't care what happens with BE going forward...just like with K2. The fact is, NEITHER was going to be part of the long term plans for the Browns. K2 because of his injuries...and BE because he was a FA next year and had already stated he didn't like playing here (something about Michigan player in Ohio State territory....nothing to do with the dropsies).
BE can go on and win a SB with the Jets and it won't diminish the fact that the Browns got 2 solid players and 2 draft picks for a guy they were going to lose for absolutely NOTHING after the season.
This was a great idea after we found the Browns were not going anywhere this year. If we had won 2 or 3 before this week...well, I bet he would still be on the team.
-
I know this isnt the popular opinion but I think we shot ourselves in the foot with this trade on the short-term perspective. Braylon was a playmaker. He can make huge plays and is a deep threat to any team.
No one we have will be able to fill that hole that Braylon left. Maybe Massaqoi can.... but he's a rookie and is still developing. He did well last week but how well will he fare as the team's No.1 WR? He'll get double teamed and harrased by safties. The reason he had a great game last week is because the Bengals were preoccupied with double teaming Braylon which left Massaquoi to step up. There's no way he will have that kind of opportunity again.
Stuckey is Mangini's teacher's pet. The HC was really high on him when he was over with the Jets... and I'm sure he's salivating to have him once again. Mangini praises his football smarts and intellect... but Stuckey is slow and has trouble getting separation. Moreover, Jets fans have complained about his dropped balls. He's not going to be a replacement for Bray-bray... He's a wide-out and fits in the slot.
That leaves us with Robiski, who we know nothing about except the fact that there's some reason he's horrible enough to bench, and Furrey, who is our 3rd down guy. Where will Furrey go if Stuckey takes over? Saftey? Do you really think he can out-play the safties we have already?
Now, on the flip side, there's things I like about this trade. In terms of long-term goals I see this being an adequate solution to our WR problems. Robo and MoMass need to step up and if we get them the playing time they should, hopefully one of them can develop into something great. At least Furrey and Stuckey have some veteran presence to help them along. Unfortunately, all of this hinges on our two WR rookies being able to consistently produce, which is something we havn't seen so far (one good game is not enough for Momass). As for Trusnik, I'm sure he can produce and I like the guy, but he doesnt address one of our many needs.
As for the draft picks.... I wish we could have gotten a 2nd rounder at least for Braylon. We got jipped. To put it in perspective, lets look at Roy Williams, who was taken 7th in the '04 draft. He's put up similar numbers to Edwards, with 2 +1000 yard seasons. Williams was traded to the Dallas Cowboys on October 14, 2008 for first, third and sixth round picks. Damn, I wish we could have gotten that instead.
So, just from a trade perspective, we dumped off our biggest playmaker for a slow wideout, a special teamer, and a 3rd and 5th pick.

Well, at least Edwards is gone and we got some picks out of him... I mean, we could have done worse but I think we could have done a lot better. Part of me is just seeing this as Mangini getting his hands on more of his beloved Jets players. I have mixed feelings about this trade. Basically, if our rookie WRs can produce then I wont feel so bad about this trade, but right now our team looks very vulnerable and frankly, we're a less effective offense at this point.

Sorry man, but BE had fallen behind Roy Williams. Your overrating BE to the extent, your post makes little sense.
-
Over the past 3 years, Edwards put up an averaged 200 yards more than Williams each season. In the same timeframe, Williams has had 14 TDs; Edwards had 25.
Your post makes little sense. Sorry, try again, and try to be less of a douchebag next time.

Take away 2007 and the picture will clear for you. Your post hence, makes little sense. BE's value really collapsed in 2008 and we saw the results of that last spring. The Lions were smart to get rid of Williams when they did. Had they waited to the offseason, he would be worth much less.
It is what it is, don't try and force it.
Oh yeah FWIW, we will get a 2nd rounder if BE decides he wants to play football.

Pretty good....been stroking it pretty true...shot a 78 and 83..got a little tired and had a few bounces that didn't go my way the second round.
That's golf. The greatest game invented.....the only game you can play that requires physical and mental most of your life.

Yes, lets arbitrarily take away a players' best year of performance when judging his talent.
That makes zero sense.Thats like saying Peyton Manning is a horrible quarterback if you take away his best years. I can just as easily claim that 2008 should be thrown out the window due to the problems we had as a team.
Keep trying.

Nah, you keep trying. You are trying to spin BE into what he is not: A superstar WR. He ain't one. his best years? Only 1 sir(much like Williams). That should be his norm.
As Crow said, the Cowboys overpaid, which is something that rarely happens in such a manner. Maybe you should accept that, rather than cry for the fallen wannabe.
-
The Cowboys overpaid. That's not a regular example.
That's your opinion. And we underpaid, in my opinion.
Whatever, we're arguing about moot points here. The main thing I was saying in my post is that we are at a worrysome situation in our WR corps. This is putting a lot of pressure on our rookies to produce. I dont think Stuckey will be doing much of anything, either.
-
I think the 3rd could conditionally become a 2nd.
BE is addition by subtraction. He was gone after the year and the last thing this team needs is meatheads doing stupid things... The product on the field provides bad-enough PR.
One good thing about this team is that you really cannot mess it up at this point... It's already a mess and there isn't much talent on it.

Remember when Albert Belle, Manny Ramirez and Jim Thome all left the Indians and we got ZILCHED for all three of them? Well, the Browns didn't get ZILCHED on BE or KW. Think about that. Were these guys REALLY going to come around and play for Mangini? These two characters?
And BE hasn't been a playmaker in a while, yet I assume he will make some out-fooking-standing plays for the Jets. He is very good at that. Just think about how ESPN won't show all the stupid drops he had. The Jets can overcome those drops - they were magnified here because of his distracting apathy.
Yeah he was our deep threat, but we have bigger needs than just WR. We need picks.
And don't count out Stuckey as a #3.
-
I guess I've come around on the BE trade. I always knew that in the back of my mind it would be better long term. I just had to let the "we are probably fcuked this season" wear off before it shined through..
Hopefully our WR corps can be threatening immediately.
-
Good riddance Michigan Asshat!
-
Regardless what Braylon does in NY, he was a detriment to the Browns. His stats were only good ONE year, & even in 2007 how many inane penalties, dropped passes, & tantrums from him?
Addition by subtraction, aka...thank you Browns!!

Trade of Edwards signals new era for Browns
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal staff writer
POSTED: 09:40 p.m. EDT, Oct 07, 2009
BEREA: Browns backup quarterback Brady Quinn went to practice Wednesday wearing a shiny pair of orange shoes.
''They're Braylon's,'' Quinn said. ''Yeah, in honor of Braylon . . . ''
As Braylon Edwards was traded to the New York Jets on Wednesday morning, there were undercurrents of concern from his teammates about what the Browns' offense will be like without its talented but inconsistent No. 1 wide receiver.
No one seemed to believe that it made the Browns a better team, a question that even coach Eric Mangini dodged.
But there was no mistaking the message Mangini sent in shipping Edwards to the Jets just two days after an altercation outside a Cleveland nightclub in which he allegedly punched a friend of LeBron James. The NFL and the Cleveland police are investigating the incident, and Edwards could be subject to a fine or suspension by the league for violating its personal conduct policy.
Mangini first got his players' attention with a Feb. 27 trade of controversy-plagued tight end Kellen Winslow to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
''This is a business and the business is winning,'' Browns left tackle Joe Thomas said. ''And the man in charge is going to decide if you're helping us win. If you're not, you're going to be gone.''
Quarterback Derek Anderson said, ''Eric has made it clear what he expects and that's fine with me, and it should be fine with everybody else.''
Asked what message he sent by trading Winslow and Edwards, Mangini said: ''It's about us trying to build the team and to continue to grow. It's not something that happens overnight.''
Edwards was dealt to the Jets for linebacker and special teams ace Jason Trusnik, a Nordonia High School product, the Jets' No. 2 receiver Chansi Stuckey and two draft choices. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the 2010 picks are a conditional third- and a fifth-rounder, the former turning into a second-rounder if Edwards reaches a designated number of receptions this season.
Edwards surprised
''I hadn't a clue I was going to get traded,'' Edwards said at his Jets press conference. He said he received a call from Mangini when he was driving to work at 7:45 a.m. ''To come to a team that's 3-1, I'm happy to get a fresh start.
''Coming here where everything is going well, I believe it will help me because you get tired of talking about the negative. The negative builds up and builds up and that frustrates you. Frustrations weigh on you when things are consistently negative. Every day there's different questions, different stuff you read, you hear, you go out to eat and you hear . . . I've never been around anything like that. That will probably make me stronger for the rest of my life.''
Mangini said Edwards said nothing in his Monday meeting with him that prompted the trade, even though the incident outside the View Ultralounge and Nightclub in which he allegedly punched promoter Edward Givens appeared to be the last straw.
''I had a good conversation with him there, we talked through the different things involved, did research,'' Mangini said. ''I wouldn't say one was necessarily a trigger to anything else. To me, this is a chance for Braylon to have a fresh start. That's good for him. In terms of what we were able to do with the trade, it's good for us.''
Changing of guard
In 2007 when the Browns went 10-6 and fell a game shy of the playoffs, Edwards and Winslow combined for 162 receptions, 2,395 yards and 21 touchdowns. Now Mangini must make do with a younger receiving corps. He said he would have no reservation about starting two rookies β Mohamed Massaquoi and Brian Robiskie β Sunday at the Buffalo Bills.
''If those are the two guys who make the strongest case, there wouldn't be any hesitation at all,'' Mangini said.
Other options are Joshua Cribbs or Mike Furrey alongside Massaquoi.
Jets coach Rex Ryan expects Edwards to start Monday night against the Dolphins in Miami.
''The thing about Braylon coming here, he doesn't have to put the team on his shoulders,'' Ryan said at his press conference. ''He can go out and relax, play loose, have fun and be part of a heckuva football team. That should be great for him.''
Mangini, fired by the Jets on the day after the season, has set up his former team well. A draft-day deal with the Browns allowed the Jets to select quarterback Mark Sanchez with the fifth overall pick, and he earned the starting job. Mangini said he had no trepidation about handing the Jets another talented player.
''No, none whatsoever,'' he said. ''Contrary to popular belief, we do trade with teams other than the Jets and we do talk to teams other than the Jets.''
Monday morning's alleged altercation was just one in a litany of incidents for Edwards since he was taken third overall in the 2005 draft. He was partying with Donte' Stallworth hours before Stallworth drove drunk and killed pedestrian Mario Reyes in Miami Beach in March. Last August, Edwards was stopped for driving 120 mph in a 65 mph zone on Interstate 90 in Avon. Edwards was voted to his first Pro Bowl in 2007, setting a franchise record with 1,289 yards and 16 touchdowns, then led the league in dropped passes in 2008.
He's sure to love the attention and the nightlife in New York, although his wardrobe might need some alterations. His new teammates ragged on him for the ''high water'' pants he was wearing with a gray suit when he arrived in the locker room.
Chances are he'll get them lengthened immediately. Last Friday when Quinn gave tight end Robert Royal the jacket off his back, Edwards checked the label and told Royal, ''You need some Louis Vuitton tennis shoes to go with that.''

damn, mangi is saving money all over the place. (!)
i let my mixed emotions run their course. screw it, this season's a wash anyway. give the rookies some reps and let them cut their teeth in actual games>>>this move actually puts us ahead of schedule on the rebuild.
Good luck to ya Braylon.
