If you were GM, what FA's would you look to bring here in the next few years? What trades would you attempt to make..
-
I agree with you on the power back but I'm thinking Lendale White. We could get him on the cheap too if they don't start using him in Tenn.
I don't see a need right now to go and get a reciever but if we do, its gotta be a number 1 guy like Boldin. But I don't see us handing over that much money on a WR.
Finally, I think Mangini will build mostly through the draft or bring guys from the Jets that he knows will follow his lead and be good teachers. Don't expect many FA splashes from this regime.
-
Well, the big thing I have with running backs, is their running style, there are 3 types of power backs.
1. Jerome Bettis/Jamal Lewis- Guys who use their bodies as ramrods
2.Lendale White/Frank Gore/Cadillac Williams/Cedric Benson- Guys who are big, and use their strength to gain extra yards via stiffarms, or plowing.
3. Marion Barber/Ronnie Brown/Ricky Williams/Lawrence Marooney- Guys who are big/strong and run with wreckless abandon, putting their bodies in susceptible postion to make moves and hits to gain extra yards, little more spped than the above
-
I think the current plan is the right plan. Not just because Mangini/Kokinis are working it but I really believe you build a team through the draft and use FAs to suppliment and fill gaps.
I like the idea of bringing in depth at improtant positions via FA but I want the core of the team to come through solid drafting of college talent.
I don't want a half used up RB with a few years left, isn't that what Savage tried to sell us. Savage was suppose to be a draft guru and spent his time, money and draft picks looking for impact players in FA. We know how that turned out. Most players in Fa are looking for one of two things; money or a ring. You don't get a ring opting to a rebuilding team so to come to the Browns they get overpaid. I do believe stopgaps like Bowens and Barton are nice fits but they are not core players for the future.
11 draft picks for 2010 draft is a good start. Draft some OL and DL guys in the later rounds you can develop. Draft an impact DB and LB. Find a Merriman. Find a Polamalu. Find a Ed Reed. Then go into the middle rounds and find a power RB. You can always find a top TE after the first round. You want to improve your QB play then find a impact OT high in the draft. A bookend for Thomas.
After you shore up your OL, find a top RB and some impact players on defense, then bring in your franchise QB to put the team over the top.
BTW, if they do it right, it will be 2011. If you bring in high profile FAs you will still be looking to develop your core in 2011.

jerious norwood - speed back who atlanta's coaching staff criminally under-uses. though similar to davis and harrison, lenwhale completely sucks, and i'd rather have three fast RBs who can take it the distance than two fast RBs and one who never gets more than four yards a carry because he is both slow and sucks. norwood also doesn't have a lot of miles on him, so he should be good to go for at least four more years.
lee evans - possibly, but probably not - he's a perennial disappointment, but that could be because his QB blows.
bo scaife - receiving TE who the titans franchised this year. will likely go to FA next year b/c the titans have rookie jared cook to take over his role.
tony scheffler - overall solid TE. blocks acceptably, catches well. the broncos would be foolish to let him go.
jarvis green - patriots d-lineman. solid fit in the 3-4. will likely stay in new england with the trade of richard seymour, but i wouldn't be surprised to see us go after him if they let him get away.
elvis dumervil - again, denver would be completely idiotic to not lock up dumervil. he's a great pass rusher and is flourishing in their new 3-4. if they let him out, expect him to command top dollar.
matt roth - serviceable OLB from miami. currently rotating with jason taylor, joey porter and cameron wake. a solid, dependable player but not spectacular. the kind of signing we'll likely make this offseason.
dj williams - great MLB. fast, good hands, a sideline-to-sideline guy, but in the same mold as DQJ, whom we also have to re-sign this offseason.
atari bigby - an enforcer at SS, but don't look for the browns to actually go after him. he's too similar to elam and has been injured this year. either way, a huge hitter who i would go after if i were GM.
we also need help on the o-line, but i don't particularly know the guys who are available in FA this year, though chris snee is an excellent OG, but look for the giants to lock him up before he hits the market. he's coughlin's son-in-law (he knocked up his daughter and then married her) and is an integral part of what's always talked about as the best OL in football.

As far as who I would target as GM, Anquan Boldin's contract might be up for grabs at the end of this year, and he is built like an AFC North receiver. He has great hands, runs great routes, and breaks tackles. He is like a Josh Cribbs who can catch and run routes actually. At 6-1 217 he has alot of bulk and VERY strong hands, a good verticle and is hard to bring down. He is alot like hines ward, only Boldin doesnt have the homo grin. Plus, he is a huge threat for YAC.
Secondly, I'd also make a run at the Cardinals Steve Breaston, he's FAST, and would stretch the field. He is imho the best slot reciever in the league, and could be a #2 on any other team.
Thirdly I would like to make a trade, we lack a power back, davis and harrison are great new quick burst filled backs but we need someone who can put the hurt on these defenders to weaken them up. I would make a move to Acquire MArion Barber from the Dallas Cowboys, I'd offer a second round pick and David Barton.

1. Hire a head coach thats not a dictator and who is offensive minded( No more Ex Patriots)
2. Get a GM thats not hand picked by the head coach ( Thought Butch Davis was the last coach who would have final say on everything)
3. Get rid of the 3-4 defense, move D'Qwell Jackson to weak side linebacker and play Veikune at MLB, move Corey Williams to DT with Shaun Rogers
4. Find 2 pass rushing DE's and a outside LB and realize Wimbley is a BUST ( Aaron Kampman from Green Bay)
5. Draft a FS who is a ball hawk and playmaker ( Eric Berry-Tenn) Get rid of Brodney Pool
6. Put Jerome Harrison at RB at for once see what he can do ( They also said D'Angelo Williams was too small)
7. Sign a veteran cornerback and Veteran possession receiver ( Malcom Floyd-Chargers), James Avant-Eagles
8. Draft a right guard and right tackle
9. Get a receiving Tight End
10. Trade for Kevin Kolb or draft a quarterback
11. Stop trading for Ex Jet players who are not very good
Veteran to cut loose: Eric Barton, Kenyon Coleman, Hank Poteat, Mike Furrey, Brodney Pool, Brady Quinn, Jamal Lewis, Robert Royal, Hank Fraley, Pork Chop Womack, John St.Clair, Robaire Smith, Nick Sorenson

Ouch ... I'm not sure I like any of the QB's & RB's (well, the ones that will 'realistically' be available and not re-signed/franchised)
Lendale White, I suppose, but not for major money. Best bet is to see how Harrison pans out this year and if so, pay him starter money over Jamal.

As far as who I would target as GM, Anquan Boldin's contract might be up for grabs at the end of this year, and he is built like an AFC North receiver.

I could agree with all of the above. Again kudo's on a great topic. A bit early? yeah, but we live in Cleveland, so it's part of the atmosphere.
