Roth is nice, but he isn't an all pro/stud type of play maker ... or he would not have been cut from a non playoff team a few games into the season. Dont get me wrong he played really well when he got here, but he isnt a stud he is a "nice" player. We need a play maker on this D.

This is a good explanation of what happened to Roth in Miami.

    http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_footb...-rosenhaus.html

Rosenhaus and another client, linebacker Matt Roth, butted heads with the Dolphins last year over the player’s desire for a contract extension and a later decision to stash Roth on the reserve/non-football injury list for the season’s first six weeks.

Roth was waived in November and landed with the Cleveland Browns, for whom he was highly productive over the final six games.

Odd saga comes to an end as Miami Dolphins cut Matt Roth

The Dolphins cut linebacker Matt Roth, but said it was based on performance and not on lingering feelings from an odd training camp situation.

Miami Dolphins linebacker Matt Roth bumps hands with a fan before the game against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.

A strange, four-month span for Dolphins linebacker Matt Roth came to an unexpected conclusion Tuesday -- the team has decided to move forward without him.

Roth, who became the center of an odd saga when he missed all of training camp with a groin injury, was released after totaling just four combined tackles during his four games this season.

The move was ``strictly a football decision,'' one source said. Although no other outside factors are believed to have contributed to his departure, the drama of training camp surely will follow Roth in the wake of Miami's choice to cut him.

It's a saga that has remained mostly unexplained. When Roth arrived for training camp this year, he blamed a failed conditioning test on being ill -- only to later come forward with an admission about a groin injury.

After trainers struggled to diagnose the issue, Roth was sent to Philadelphia to meet with a leading groin specialist, Dr. William Meyers. The evaluation did not reveal any significant issues, and Roth returned with what seemed to be an optimistic report.

But according to multiple sources at the time, Roth continued to sit out of practice. with no further explanation other than to say his groin was still sore. The strange situation caused the team to go forward without him, moving Jason Taylor into the strong-side linebacker role where Roth served as a starter throughout 2008.

On Oct. 31, Roth was reactivated to the 53-man roster, seeming to regain his standing with the team. That decision served as the last formal move until Tuesday's announcement by Miami that he had been cut.

The most recent source to speak on the situation stressed that Roth's departure was based strictly on Miami's plans for the future, as well as Roth's performance -- but that it was not a result of any lingering feelings from the training camp situation.

    PRECEDENT

The move makes some sense when considering the past two years of decision-making: The Dolphins, under the current regime, have been an organization that doesn't delay the inevitable when it is financially sound to act.

Roth, for instance, is scheduled to become a free agent after this season. If the Dolphins did not expect to sign him to a new contract -- and they also were not getting an adequate performance from him -- the team would rather begin developing and evaluating players who have potential to fit into a long-term plan.

Roth's departure also brings to light a few staggering statistics about how dramatically different the team has become over the past two years, while also revealing the bad fortunes Miami endured on draft days during a five-year span between 2003 and 2007.

Only eight of 38 players drafted during that span still remain with the team. And only nine of the roster's 53 players hold a rare distinction: They were drafted by the Dolphins -- but not by Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland.

    ALL ABOUT THE FIT

Roth's departure is still a strange one that doesn't necessarily seem to fit the mold of the many other departures that came before him. During coach Tony Sparano's first season, Roth was viewed as a prime example of the coaching staff's ability to think outside the box when it came to player personnel.

With the need for more linebackers in the newly installed 3-4 system, the Dolphins began evaluating which players could make the potential transition. Former defensive end Vonnie Holliday got a look, but it didn't work out.

When Miami threw Roth into the role, it seemed as close to a natural fit as anyone could have expected.

He would thrive in his new position in 2008, becoming a player that looked like he might have long-term stability at the spot.

He finished the season with five sacks, four pass defenses, two forced fumbles and 53 tackles. Less than a year later, as far as the Dolphins are concerned, those days seem to be settled in the very distant past.

  • roth was a huge reason for us winning the last 4 games. i consider him a playmaker. just because he isn't a marquee name doesn't mean he isn't a playmaker.

Needed to add the jets to the other part. As long as where getting solid players and starters, I do not care who we are getting them from. Today's additions where a great trade for us.

  • Like this move....fills two holes and gives us a less to worry about on draft day...we have other concerns.

Ooh, that is what you call a slobberknocker!

I guess we should ask: does this trade mean they may be looking elsewhere besides cornerback in the draft?

  • Amazing trade for the browns.

    Can't wait till the draft.

Except of course we are now down two draft picks. I think Browns are now down to 10.

  • only 10? that's whack

I really like what Roth showed over the course of the last 6 games with the Browns. And I agree that he was a reason why the Brownies won there last 4 games. But, to simply judge him on his las 6 games though and call him a playmaker based solely on that when he has been in the league since like 2005 though is a little far fecthed to me. Granted he has a ton of potential and could be a diamond in the rough kind of find it is hard for me to say that now. To me right now he is no better or worse then the rest of linebackers. This team needs an elite playmaker on the defensive side of the ball before this team will have a great defense though. Thats all I am saying.

Since 1999 we have had a bunch of "good" linebackers (and defensive players) and it has translated to 2 winning seasons and medicore defenses at best (most of the time bad defenses) which is why I don't really want to settle for a guy like Matt Roth being our marquee defensive player. Again ... I like Roth. I jst want to see a stud defensive player leading the charge on Sundays and a guy like Roth being a really good complimetray player.

  • If we draft Berry, who would be our starting free safety? It may be something we need to fix.

  • I think this trade really changes things.

First off, instead of using a fourth and fifth round pick on two players hoping they might be able to play...we now have two guys that we KNOW can play (one a former Pro Bowler). It also frees us up to take "best available players" if we want to. There are still needs but I think they need to be revised now. What's more, Adam Schefter reported that the Browns didn't pay Brown any more money, they just extended him.

I was thinking that if neither Clausen or Bradford fall then we either take:

    1) Berry if available

    2) An offensive lineman/RT (not likely)

    3) Trade down. Imagine this....we trade down to #14 (Seahawks)and take S Earl Thomas. Then we trade back into the #28 spot (San Diego) and pick up WR Golden Tate.

OPTIONS! OPTIONS! OPTIONS! Gotta love it!

Certainly such a scenario is not beyond the realm of possibility. Maybe not that specific deal, but something on that order.

  • I was upset at first that we gave up Hall in the deal, then quickly realized I was an idiot and came around to what a hell of a deal this is! I love this trade! Now we just need to pick up Flozell Adams on a one year deal to be our Right Tackle, and then we'll realy be able to either pick up Berry or the best player available. I'd have to give Holmgren a solid B+ to an A right now. We'll have to see how he does in the draft now.

This trade definitly does give us options. If we aren't able to land Berry I agree about trading to get a pick midway through the first round and possibly a second rounder as well. I would love to see us bring in Earl Thomas with the first rounder or a good pass rushing linebacker and then I would love to see them score a top guard prospect with a second rounder.

I would much rather see them sign a vet WR as we spent 2 second rounders on WRs last year. Problem is I have no clue as to who they can sign as far as vets go ... I wouldn't really want TO brought in ... after that there isn't too much. I guess maybe Torry Holt if no one has signed him yet. I also wouldnt have hated to see them keep furrey.

A little side note ... to help tighten up the secondary later on in the draft I would love to see Myron Rolle get picked in the fourth/fifth if he is available. Not really to sure where he will get picked.

  • I like the activity in FA but still... this team needs to build through the draft for the future so I won't get too excited

Man he looks like he is in some dizzy pain when he is crawling. I dont think they have used that play ever again.

  • Browns restructure Sheldon Brown's contract

Posted by Michael David Smith on April 2, 2010 4:12 PM ET

This morning the Cleveland Browns acquired Sheldon Brown in a trade with the Eagles. This afternoon the club made sure its new cornerback would be a happy camper.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Brown has already restructured his contract with the Browns.

The new deal doesn't give Brown any more money than he was already scheduled to get paid, but it converted a some of the money Brown had remaining on the final three years of his deal and turned it into guaranteed money that will be paid right now as a signing bonus. The Browns also added incentives to Brown's new contract.

The 31-year-old Brown started all 16 games for the Eagles in 2009 and has started every game except one over the last six seasons. He's expected to be a starter in Cleveland as well.

  • It's possible Brown may be moved to free safety and Haden is still in the mix. Philly had thoughts of doing this.....

Berry and Haden are right back at it. If Berry is there, leave Sheldon at corner. If not, take Haden and move Brown to safety.
