Leigh Tiffin
-
I just read that Tiffin agreed to a Free Agent contract. I have lived in Alabama for 2 years now and have watched him, and I think he is going to stick with us and will probably be Phil's replacement in the not so distant future. Does anyone else like this signing?

I like it, especially since Dawson is a hold out threat.....Tiffin has a good leg.
-
Dawson is washed up imo. His leg strength is very questionable at this point

That just dont seem right.....a KICKER holding out come on now
I dont see Tiffin making the squad, Dawsons one of the better kickers in the league especially in bad weather. We dont have a roster spot to carry a extra kicker

I like Dawson too.
I just remember him complaining he wasn't paid enough.
I know you always need 2-3 kickers in camp so you don't wear a player out, so if we are going to have them, you might as well have the best you can find.
Being a NFL kicker is a pretty exclusive club. There aren't many jobs and the number of jobs that open in any given year are small....like maybe none in some years.
There are a bunch of good kickers who aren't playing because they were never given a real chance because nothing was open...then their window closes.
I have little doubt Tiffin could be a NFL kicker. If he ever does is another story. He just needs a team to say you're our guy and give him some kicks...then he sticks around the league for 20 years.

So wrong. He was hurt last year. At spring training dude was hitting 60 yard field goals in the skinny field goal. Dude has 3-4 strong years left.

Never hurts to bring in a young kicker but the only way Dawson isn't our kicker is if he gets banged up and he misses time. IF he's holding out, he'll stop holding out and report, as they'll come to some sort of arrangement one way or another. Each year though, i think you should bring in a fresh leg to see what all is out there in terms of talent. Tiffin was almost considered draft worthy, so i think he's a solid young guy to give a look-see.

Why not Mangini seems to think we have a roster spot for a fourth QB? Let's carry an extra kicker too! Maybe we can cut one of our receivers to make room. We have a lot of quality at that position. But I am just joking I do agree with you.

He was also missing 40-45 yarders at the scrimmage and during the season. What injury did he have though?

Former Tide star Leigh Tiffin puts best foot forward, agrees to deal with Browns

Former Alabama kicker Leigh Tiffin has agreed to a free-agent deal with the Cleveland Browns.
TUSCALOOSA -- The Cleveland Browns thought enough of former Alabama place-kicker Leigh Tiffin to ask him to stay around for a while longer.
On the strength of a tryout this past weekend at the Browns' mini-camp, Tiffin said he agreed to a free-agent deal offered by the organization. He'll officially sign when he returns to the team in two weeks.
"It went real well. They said they were really impressed with what I did and definitely wanted to bring me back," Tiffin said Monday. "It's a good step. I figure I've got a pretty good chance to hang around there."
The Browns had three specialists trying out at the mini-camp. Tiffin was the only one invited back.
He's now likely to make it to training camp in August with the team.
He's unlikely to beat out Cleveland place-kicker Phil Dawson, an 11-year veteran who is the franchise's all-time leader in field-goal percentage (82.8 percent) and is the third-leading point-scorer (897) in Browns' history.
But just having the opportunity to continue to kick is worthwhile at this stage. Dawson, for instance, was signed and waived twice by teams in 1998 as an undrafted free agent before landing with Cleveland.
"You go through camp with them, you know you're going to get a lot better," Tiffin said.
"Regardless of whether or not they keep you, it really increases your chances of ending up somewhere else. It's a really competitive business. You've got to hang in there and see how it goes."
The son of former Tide kicker Van Tiffin, Leigh arrived at Alabama as a walk-on and exited as an All-American, Lou Groza Award finalist and the program's all-time leader in field goals and points.
He is one of four undrafted Alabama seniors confirmed to have landed free-agent deals. He joins tight end Colin Peek (Atlanta Falcons), defensive end Lorenzo Washington (Dallas Cowboys) and linebacker Cory Reamer (New York Jets). Linebacker Eryk Anders (Browns), punter P.J. Fitzgerald (St. Louis Rams), running back Roy Upchurch (Baltimore Ravens) and safety Justin Woodall (Chicago Bears) were also invited to team tryouts.

Common now. Washed up? Lets throw him under the truck then. Give me a break. The guy has more left in him.

BIG Dawson fan. kicker or not, you score 900 (897) points in the NFL, you can hold-out in my book.
the dude wins games in Cleveland. that's as much an embarrassment about our team as it is a compliment to PD though. until our offense gets on it's feet i don't know how we can afford to lose him. no one can simply step in and fill his shoes. pay da man!
it would be nice if he mentored Tiffin on how to play in CLE though, maybe we can carry him on the PS.
-
I am in nohurry to see Phil leave....he is a money kicker and he has a strong leg.
My only point is as log as there is some uncertainty, we might as well have a young hotshot in camp.
Tiffin is going to be a NFL kicker, somewhere in the next year or two....I hope so anyway
NFL kicker is a tough job to get....timing is almost everything....teams aren't going to bring you in if you aren't skilled....then it just depends on openings.....if nothing opens in a year or two, you are done. You are branded at that point and a new wave of hopefuls enter the picture.

i definitely agree about bringing him in. and a little motivation never hurt anyone either.

RAC got the additional 5 yards out of him that we see today. imagine how hard that ball got in those Buffalo Blizzard games. i'd hate to be seeing that for the first time with a big time kick on the line.
this would be a great place for him to hang on--he'd see a lot. even from the sidelines the end of our schedule would help season any young guy coming into the pros no matter where they ended up, as far as kickers go. he'd see a lot about how the current starter prepares and deals with adverse weather. i bet there's a lot of down time at practice if you're on specials too. Phil brain would be great to pick while killing time.

Tiffin must not of impressed them
Browns add kicker Shaun Suisham to the roster
Posted by Matt Loede on May 18th, 2010 in News, Roster Moves
The Browns today signed free agent kicker Shaun Suisham, the team announced. In addition, the team waived kicker Leigh Tiffin.
Originally signed by Pittsburgh as undrafted free agent on April 28, 2005, Suisham has appeared in 57 games and connected on 87-of-110 field goal attempts and 101-of-103 extra points for 362 career points. He has seen action in eight games over two stints with Dallas (2005-06, 09) and in 49 contests with Washington (2006-09). In 2009, Suisham connected on 20-of-24 field goals and 25-of-26 PATS in 14 games with the Cowboys and Redskins.
Suisham finished his college career as Bowling Green State University’s (2001-04) all-time leading scorer (361 points), while also setting the Falcons record with 45 career field goals. As a senior, he finished 12th in the nation in scoring with a 9.3 point-per-game average and was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, given annually to the nation’s best kicker. Born December 29, 1981, the 6-0, 200 pounder hails from Wallaceburg, Ontario where he attended Wallaceburg District Secondary School.

Don't doubt yourself so fast Zombo. We need a veteran kicker in camp and if Phil isn't going to be there for Tiffin, you may as well bring in Suisham. Who by the way, isn't very good so I don't see him being the answer as much as a mentor through camp.
We are seriously discussing kickers! Please training camp hurry up and get here!!!!!

Phil wont be here forever, bring in kickers and let the cream rise to the top....
Kickers are a huge part of professional football with the outcome of many games depending on their success...
Cleveland is one of the toughest places to kick in the NFL which is a testament to Dawsons ability...
Phil wont last forever, enjoy him & his game while he's here but dont be surprised when his career comes to an end--it's gonna happen....
Peace
