Pass rush rant...

Totally agree, not only does it allow you more time but it allows you to send more blitzers. If you dont have to drop LB's into coverage to help in the secondary, they can focus more on stopping the run and getting pressure on the QB.
-
I imagine it has to be tough to be trying to get to the qb, and the qb's all simply throw to a wide open receiver most of the time.
No confidence in the secondary has to frustrate the defense up front, ...
I believe we'll have two new starters at cb and safety.
Excellent post - the pass rush should be a -hit-.

I totally agree that our secondary play this past season (and for many past seasons) was terrible to say the least....
The one exception was the 2nd Steelers game when the coverage was nearly perfect throughout the game...
But lets not lay it all at the feet of the secondary.... In mant games the opposing QB had 5 to 7 seconds to roam the backfield to find an open receiver... You can only hold down a receiver for so long...
The seconday played a huge part in our demise but the defensive line and linebackers were not without blame...
It wouldn't surprise me to see 2 new corners and 2 new safeties starting this year.....
Peace

Its a two way street and i agree with both sides..our secondary is truly lacking but so is our front 7 we have lacked solid play from the front 7 and the secondary, improving either should improve both but improving both will equal a solid defense...
There has been plenty of times the secondary held well and the front 7 couldnt get there and theres been times the front 7 put heavy pressure and forced the pass but the secondary had broken down, both need upgraded but the safeties are the biggest concern to me because honest abe and adams just dont cut it as starters...
Wright is mediocre at best and im calling mcdonald a bust at this point..
We need 2 starting safties, and at least one CB in the secondary..
Front 7 we need 2 upgraded LBs and 2 decent DEs...

Seeing as McDonald was a 5th round pick, I think it harsh to say he is a bust.
In the context of where he was drafted, he has been a pretty good player.
It isn't his fault the Browns for whatever reason have neglected drafting corners high, relying on 5th rounders and aging veterans to cover the position.
If you want to be good at the corner position you have to use a top pick once every 4-5 years, not every 15 or so like we have done.
We have been stuck in a cycle of drafting all these high risk positions early....qb's, receivers, backs and haven't just locked down positions where ability is more easily transferred to the NFL....Corners, O-line, D-line.
Even Warren, a bust in most people eyes in Cleveland was still a pretty decent DT who started for a number of years after he left here....no doubt he wasn't a Bob Lilly or Joe Greene...which we expected, but in the grand scheme of things he was a solid NFL down lineman.

Hi Gips,
I wouldn't say McDonald was a Bust. He may not be a shutdown corner but he has made some pretty impressive plays since being drafted. Some huge plays at times - I was a fan of McDonald after his first and second season and thought he could make it big. He wasn't, as Ballpeen noted, a high round pick either and I think, considering the merry-go-round of coaching and management and lack of CB mentoring, he hasn't done badly enough to be considered a bust.
I'm looking forward to seeing Haden share the corner spots with Wright and seeing both of them push for excellence next season - Haden should bring Wright on who I hope wants to show leadership on the practice field and on game day. I think B Mc has a future in the NFL - maybe not here though.

Whether it's the DBs making the rushers worse or the rushers being the problem, we totaled 40 sacks last year which placed the Browns 8th in the NFL in that category. I don't think that getting to the QB was the problem.
If you look at the defensive stats, we gave up an average completion percentage (59.5%, ranked 19th). Where we led the league was in pass plays of over 20 yards (62). We also were in the top ten in pass plays over 40 yards and top five in the yards per pass attempt category.
What these stats say to me is that it wasn't any easier to complete a pass against the Browns in 2009 (as opposed to any other team) but when you did it was more likely to go for a big gain. To me, this means we aren't tackling and giving up too much YAC.

Interesting topic to say the least.
I like the "attack the QB" defense better than the "shut down corner" defense. We had arguably one of the top tandems in NFL history with Dixon & Minnifield, yet we couldn't rush the QB worth squat back then. We had solid safety play with Felix Wright & Chris Rockins as well. I'm pretty sure Clay Matthews was our sack leader during that time (we played a 3-4 back then too).
I'm no fan of the 3-4 defense, especially when you don't have stud LB play. Hopefully our LBs step it up, and the defense improves remarkably this season.

nice take, makes sense why we brought in 3 DB's that can tackle.

I can't wait till the seasons over and we have a Defensive Player of the Year candidate.

i believe those are the same defense>>>it's yin/yang. if your corners can't cover you'll never get the chance to attack the QB, and if your front 7 can give the QB fits it will make pretty much any corner look "shutdown".the problem lies with having one and not the other--you need both in today's 3-4 more than ever before for the scheme to have success. with our new stable of versatile LB's and DB additions we are finally on our way to having the personnel to run it properly...on paper at least. as usual i am hopeful but we'll see.
Frankly, I'm getting annoyed with all this "we need a pass rusher" babble.
i agree. just like the "we needed a QB or a RB" babble. most of it originates on national sports sites more than on forums but many fans still buy into it.I'm not saying people on here rant about pass rushers. It's mainly other sites.
here on TBB it seems we have no trouble filtering through "expert opinions" and disregarding the national view if we feel it doesn't fit. i notice a lot of others simply take it at face value and run.
